Data from: Why do bugs perish? range size and local vulnerability traits as surrogates of Odonata extinction risk

<p>Despite claims of an insect decline worldwide, our understanding of extinction risk in insects is incomplete. Using bionomic data of all odonate (603 dragonflies and damselflies) North American species, we assessed: a) regional extinction risk and whether this is related to local extirpation; b) whether these two patterns are similar altitudinally and latitudinally; and, c) areas of conservation concern. We used geographic range size as a predictor of regional extinction risk and body size, thermal limits and habitat association as predictors of local extirpation. We found that: a) greater regional extinction risk is related to narrow thermal limits, lotic habitat use and large body size (this in damselflies but not dragonflies); b) southern species are more climate-tolerant but with limited geographic range size than northern species; and, c) two priority areas for odonate conservation are the cold-temperate to sub-boreal Northeast USA and the Transversal Neo-Volcanic System. Our approach can be used to estimate insect extinction risk as it compensates for the lack of abundance data. </p>

Spatial sorting promotes rapid (mal)adaptation in the red-shouldered soapberry bug after hurricane-driven local extinctions

<p>Predicting future evolutionary change is a critical challenge in the Anthropocene as geographic range shifts and local extinction emerge as hallmarks of planetary change. Hence, spatial sorting – a driver of rapid evolution in which dispersal-associated traits accumulate along expanding range edges and within recolonized habitats – might be of growing importance in ecology and conservation. We report on the results of a natural experiment that monitored re-colonization of host plants by the seed-feeding, red-shouldered soapberry bug, <em>Jadera</em> <em>haematoloma</em>, after local extinctions from catastrophic flooding in an extreme hurricane. We tested the contribution of spatial sorting to generate rapid and persistent evolution in dispersal traits, as well as in feeding traits unrelated to dispersal. Long-winged dispersal forms accumulated in re-colonized habitats, and due to genetic correlation, mouthparts also became longer, and this shift persisted across generations. Those longer mouthparts were likely adaptive on one host plant species but maladaptive on two others based on matching the optimum depth of seeds within their host fruits. Moreover, spatial sorting eroded recently evolved adaptive divergence in mouthpart length among all host-associated biotypes, an outcome pointing to profound practical consequences of the extreme weather event for local adaptation, population resilience, and evolutionary futures.</p>

BugC: C Dataset for Bug Localization

<p>The <strong>BuGC </strong>dataset is <strong>a set of 21 C Projects</strong> extracted from GitHub, assorted for research in <strong>Bug Localization</strong>, in the context of open source development.&nbsp;The dataset consists of 36,617 closed issues. Among these, 2462 issues are closed by pull-requests, which gives us the information of <strong>2462 fixed bug reports</strong>, which can be used for bug localization purposes.</p> <p>For each 21 C projects, there are two file formats, i.e., json and xlsx. These files contain information about the issues and pull-requests for the respective projects. Using these files, bug reports data (issues related to a pull-request) can be extracted, which can be used for the Bug Localization purpose.</p>
