Database research on the performance of Brazilian teachers in the pandemic and the burnout syndrome

The research developed at the Federal University of Santa Catarina aimed to analyze the levels of Burnout Syndrome in teaching activities during the pandemic, seeking to identify factors, conditions and levels of education that could be associated. Burnout Syndrome is associated with professional activity including exhaustion, emotional exhaustion, chronic stress and dehumanization. The research foresees two procedures for data collection. At first, the instrument was built and validated with specialists. The questionnaire applied online included sociodemographic questions and health conditions, as well as personal and institutional conditions for acting as a teacher during the pandemic and includes the adaptation of a standardized instrument on Burnout Syndrome.

Sociodemographic and Work-Related Factors Associated with Burnout Syndrome in Healthcare Professionals

Background: Burnout syndrome, intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, has profoundly impacted healthcare professionals' mental health globally. This study in Peru aimed to investigate sociodemographic and work-related factors associated with burnout dimensions among healthcare workers. Methods: Employing a cross-sectional predictive design, this study encompassed 1,844 healthcare professionals across three major hospitals in Peru. A carefully selected sample of 334 participants, ranging in age from 22 to 68 years and including both genders, was studied. Data collection involved a comprehensive sociodemographic work form and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), which is recognized for its robust psychometric properties. The research included thorough psychometric, descriptive, and inferential analyses, using linear regression to test various predictive models. Results: The study found that emotional exhaustion was significantly associated with several factors, including employment status (R² = 0.010), marital status (R² = 0.003), and length of service (R² = 0.015). Depersonalization showed a significant correlation with gender (R² = 0.015) and the amount of daily patient contact. Personal accomplishment was notably influenced by gender (R² = 0.039) and length of service (R² = 0.025). Conclusions: The research identified several key factors contributing to burnout, notably being female, having a contracted employment status, shorter service duration (specifically 6 to 10 years), and engaging in 1 to 6 hours of patient contact per day. These insights are crucial for understanding burnout in healthcare settings and underscore the need for targeted interventions and support strategies for healthcare professionals.

Associated factors of Burnout Syndrome in Peruvian health professionals before Covid 19 pandemic: A systematic review

Introduction: The Burnout Syndrome (BS) constitutes a prevalent occupational health problem in the group of health professionals.

Objective: To describe the prevalence and factors associated with BS in Peruvian health professionals.

Method: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature were accomplished. Key terms were used: "burnout", "professional exhaustion", with words related to Peru. The databases consulted were LILACS/ Virtual health library, Medline/PubMed, Science Direct, EBSCO, Scopus, SciELO, and RENATI-SUNEDU, published from 2000 to 2020. The methodological quality assessment was accomplished using the Newcastle Ottawa instrument.

Results: 33 studies were identified (11 scientific articles and 22 graduate theses), the median of the participants included in each study was 76 (IQR: 47-106). The median total score was 55.8 points (IQR: 44-61). The meta-analysis identified the global prevalence of moderate BS by subgroups of regions of Peru, it was 53% (95% CI: 36% to 70%); by profession 54% (95% CI: 28% to 79%); by general areas 61% (95% CI: 39% to 70%) and emergency 40% (95% CI: 18% to 64%). Most of the factors associated with BS are related to work (work environment, dysfunctional group behavior, time of service, satisfaction, and workload); and sociodemographic (age, sex, and profession).

Conclusions: The BS and its three dimensions are more frequently associated with work, sociodemographic and individual factors. SB and the dimensions of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization are associated with factors outside of work. It is the first systematic review of the subject in Peru, being useful to generate proposals for public policies in occupational health and health intervention programs.
