3D model of a cairn grave near the Bear Trap in Northwest Greenland

This dataset consists of a 3D dense point cloud and a textured mesh model (see the README file) of a cairn grave that is positioned near ‘The Bear Trap’. The Bear Trap is a Norse ruin at the western end of the Nuussuaq Peninsula. The 3D model was created from 639 digital photographs that were processed using Agisoft Metashape Pro v1.7; Linux Ubuntu). A 24 megapixel Sony a6000 APS-C mirrorless camera fitted with a 17 mm lens was used to acquire ground-level imagery of the structure.

The image survey was conducted as part of the Vaigat Iceberg-Microbial Oil Degradation and Archaeological Heritage Investigation (VIMOA) project, which was funded by the Danish Centre for Marine Research and supported by the Arctic Research Centre at Aarhus University, the National Museum of Denmark, the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, and The Greenland National Museum and Archives in Nuuk. Permits for the survey were obtained in advance from the Greenland National Museum and Archives in Nuuk. Walsh et al. (2020) provides an overview of the archaeological surveys conducted during the VIMOA project and Walsh et al. (in prep) provides further details specific to The Bear Trap and surrounding archaeological contexts.

Walsh et al. 3D model of a box-type structure under a small cairn near the Bear Trap in Northwest Greenland

This dataset consists of files that can be used to view a high-resolution 3D model of a box-type structure under a small cairn in the vicinity of ‘The Bear Trap’. The interior of the stone box appears to have been completely empty. Similar small stone box structures have been identified and discussed by Schedermann (e.g. 1990: 159) for Arctic Small Tool tradition (ASTt) sites on Skraeling Island and by McGee (1979) for Port Refuge in the Canadian High Arctic. Similar and equally enigmatic features have also been described by Knuth (1966/67: 203) for far north and northeast Greenland. They have been alternatively attributed to numerous PalaeoEskimo cultural complexes, but without dated materials from the site current attribution of the feature’s function, significance or date are not possible.

The 3D model was created from 280 digital photographs that were processed usingAgisoft Metashape Pro v1.7. More information is provided in processing report and the readme file that accompanies this dataset.

Cairn and Landscape Interaction: A Study of Human Ecodynamics in the North Atlantic

Cairns are very versatile constructions, used for a variety of human activities. For this reason, this project focuses on the study of navigational and agricultural cairns as a way to further the study and understanding of human ecodynamics in the North Atlantic. The project was developed within the wider framework of DataARC, a ciberinfrastructure that interconnects and facilitates access to several North Atlantic datasets.

The study uses a variety of interdisciplinary data, methodologies, tools, and approaches in its analysis. It is divided in two case studies. The first case study analyses the role of navigational cairns and their relationship with the roads and the general landscape while creating proposed routes between late medieval/early modern farm networks in Iceland. The results support the hypothesis that cairns were being used as road markers, and suggests a dependence between landscape features and cairn positioning, indicating landscape agency. The second case study focuses on analysing the position and effect of clearance cairns in the Scottish landscape. Archaeological and landscape data (i.e. soil quality, land compaction, erosion levels, and continued use in agricultural practices) were combined in a newly created dataset that was examined using statistical analysis. The results show a correlation between the presence of cairns and a high erosion risk while proposing three effects of clearance cairns on soils: so exhaustive they are no longer cultivable, they are cultivable but have a risk of erosion, and so non-exhaustive that they can still be cultivated.

Overall, the project's findings highlight cairn's usefulness in the study of human ecodynamics. The datasets available here belong to both case studies. The first presents an Icelandic (Westfjords) navigational dataset with information from the routes the cairns are located in as well as their likelihood of being a route marker. The second offers a Scottish clearance cairn dataset which includes a variety of archaeological, historical, and geological data. There are two versions of this dataset: the raw version (ClearanceCairnDataset) and the processed version which offers an interactive table which classifies the cairns on the basis of soil type as well as a variety of other variables (InteractiveClearanceCairns). The code used to analyse this dataset and produce bar charts and pie charts has also been uploaded both in its original R file and a XPS version. Both datasets include metadata in PDF format. A CSV file with combinators created to connect these datasets to DataARC's concept map has also been included (CombinatorsForDataARC).

Merrivale Cairn Circle
Merrivale is probably the best known and most visited of the prehistoric sites on Dartmoor, Devon (England) partly due to its ease of access and partly due to the wealth of monuments that greet the visitor. The most conspicuous of these are the pair of long stone rows that cross the landscape of Longash Common but close-by is also a settlement site, a stone circle with a tall outlying stone, a couple of ring cairns and a cist as well as several other cairns and a length of reave.
