Growth parameters and resistance to Sphaerulina musiva-induced canker are more important than wood density for increasing genetic gain from selection of Populus spp. hybrids for northern climates

<p>The data was collected from a common garden genetics trial established in 2008 in northern Alberta, Canada. The trial represents 1978 (initial number) hybrid poplar clones from 63 families and includes interspecific crosses between <em>Populus deltoides</em> (D), <em>Populus nigra</em> (N), <em>Populus balsamifera</em> (B), <em>P. maximowiczii</em> (M), and <em>P. &times; petrowskyana</em> (<em>P. laurifolia</em> &times; <em>P. nigra</em>). Female clone 24 (&lsquo;Walker&rsquo; = (<em>Populus deltoides </em>&times; (<em>P. laurifolia &times; P. nigra</em>))) and male progeny clone 2403 (&lsquo;Okanese&rsquo; = (&lsquo;Walker&rsquo; &times; (<em>P. laurifolia &times; P. nigra</em>))) were used as reference clones. The study design was a randomized complete block design, with one ramet per clone in each of four blocks. Measurements were carried out after three, eight, and 10 growing seasons on the genetics trial. Results presented in &lsquo;HybridPoplarsTrial.csv&rsquo; file, show is the raw data, while &lsquo;Summary data.csv&rsquo; contains the mean values for clones obtained from the four blocks. Measured and calculated traits include: DBH (diameter at breast height; 1.3 m); H (height); canker (canker severity&nbsp;caused by <em>Sphaerulina musiva</em> (scale 0-3)); MAI (mean annual increment), V (volume).</p> <p>Description of headings:</p> <p>Trait [unit] -&nbsp;Description</p> <p>DBH_Age_3 [cm] -&nbsp;diameter at breast height at age 3</p> <p>H_Age_3 [m] -&nbsp;height at age 3</p> <p>DBH_Age_8 [cm] -&nbsp;diameter at breast height at age 8</p> <p>H_Age_8 [m] -&nbsp;height at age 8</p> <p>H_Age_10 [m] -&nbsp;height at age 10</p> <p>DBH_Age_10 [cm] -&nbsp;diameter at breast height at age 10</p> <p>Canker_Age_8 -&nbsp;canker severity&nbsp;caused by <em>Sphaerulina musiva</em> (scale 0-3)</p> <p>Canker_Age_10 -&nbsp;canker severity&nbsp;caused by <em>Sphaerulina musiva</em> (scale 0-3)</p> <p>V_Age_8 [m3 ha-1] -&nbsp;volume at age 8</p> <p>MAI_Age_8 [m3 ha-1 yr-1] -&nbsp;mean annual increment at age 8</p> <p>V_Age_10 [m3 ha-1] -&nbsp;volume at age 10</p> <p>MAI_Age_10 [m3 ha-1 yr-1] -&nbsp;mean annual increment at age 10</p> <p>WD_Age_10 [kg m-3] - wood density at age 10</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Aspen Fungal Canker Inventory at Previoulsy Established Monitoring and Inventory Plots Across Interior Alaska, Sampled 2016-2018

This dataset contains characterization of 88 study sites and inventory data for individual trees at these study sites recorded between 2016-2018. Canker was inventoried within previously established networks of long-term monitoring and inventory plots scattered across interior Alaska, and within additional sites selected specifically for this study. These included sites within the Bonanza Creek (BNZ) Experimental Forest (BCEF), and sites within the BNZ Regional Site Network (RSN), both maintained by the BNZ Long-Term Ecological Research program (BNZ LTER). We also surveyed plots within the Cooperative Alaska Forest Inventory (CAFI) network, a network of 203 sites representing a wide range of mature boreal forest stands scattered across interior and south-central Alaska including the Kenai Peninsula.

Genome sequence resources from three isolates of the apple canker pathogen Neonectria ditissima infecting forest trees

<p><em>Neonectria ditissima</em> is a generalist ascomycete plant pathogen causing canker diseases on a variety of hardwood tree species and can cross-infect many of them. The fungus enters the plants through wounds throughout the year. <em>N. ditissima</em> is considered a major threat to apple production responsible for the fruit tree canker disease which damages trees and causes rotting of fruits in storage. Nearby forests and shelter belts can serve as source of inoculum for well-managed apple orchards. Thus, knowledge about the <em>N. ditissima</em> isolates infecting different host species is essential for designing integrated pest management strategies. Here, we describe the genomes of three <em>N. ditissima</em> isolates, Nd_iso34, Nd_iso35, and Nd_iso36, infecting European beech, American tulip tree, and American beech, respectively. We obtained genome assemblies of ca. 45 megabases for all isolates, covering 94% of the <em>N. ditissima</em> reference annotation, and 97% of the universal single-copy orthologs (BUSCOs). We conclude that these genome assemblies are a highly relevant resource considering the scarcity of genomic data available for <em>N. ditissima</em>.</p>

Data from a field plot experiment with the canola pathogen Leptosphaeria maculans including disease severity at the leaf spot and canker stages of the epidemic, and population composition as isolates infectivity pathotypes.

<p><strong>Data set</strong></p> <p>Data are from an experiment simulating how differences in <em>Brassica napus</em> resistance deployment strategies and landscape connectivity influence epidemic severity and pathogen population composition of the fungus <em>Leptosphaeria maculans</em> on field plots inoculated with combinations of stubble in 2016 at CSIRO Canberra, ACT, Australia. Disease severity was assessed on the 60 field plots [Data_severity.csv] and 1490 isolates were sampled and assessed for infectivity [Data_infectivity.csv]. This dataset is described and analyzed in Bousset et al. (2018).</p> <p>Treatments were factorial combination of Resistance, Genetic Connectivity and Spatial Connectivity, replicated in 4 blocks (B1 to B4). Resistance has 3 categories (Rlm4, Rlm6 LepR1) differing by the resistance genes in oilseed rape varieties. Genetic Connectivity has 2 levels (HighGC, LowGC) differing by the pre-adaptation of the stubble populations to the host variety. Spatial Connectivity has two levels (HighSC, LowSC) differing by the stubble load. Control plots had NoStubble.</p> <p><strong>Data files</strong></p> <p>[Data_severity.csv] Disease severity was assessed on the 60 field plots at leaf spot and canker stages of the epidemic. Leaf spots data are counts. Canker data are numbers of stems in 12 categories defined by the cankered area on cross section (0 = no canker to 100 = fully cankered).</p> <p>[Data_infectivity.csv] Two types of isolates (122 from 3 stubble sources with contrasting preadaptation and 1368 from leaves sampled on 50 field plots) were tested for infectivity response (V = infective; A = non-infective) on the three host varieties (Rlm4, Rlm6 LepR1), at the seedling stage in greenhouse.</p> <p><strong>Associated publication</strong></p> <p>Bousset L, Sprague S, Thrall PH, Barrett LG (2018). Spatio-temporal connectivity and host resistance influence evolutionary and epidemiological dynamics of the canola pathogen <em>Leptosphaeria maculans. Evolutionary Applications</em> [ DOI: 10.1111/eva.12630 ].</p> <p><strong>Funding information</strong></p> <p>This work benefited from the financial support of INRA &ndash; the French National Institute for Agronomical Research, a CSIRO Sir Frederick McMaster fellowship to L. Bousset (Impact of inoculum carry-over on landscape dynamics of the blackleg canola pathogen) and the Grains Research &amp; Development Corporation (GRDC Grant CSP00192)</p>

Alder Canker Survey Initiated 2005

This data set is a permanent record of the extent of canker infection in Alnus tenuifolia throughout interior and south-central Alaska during 2005. During the summer of 2005, we initiated a long-term monitoring of the stem canker (putatively Valsa melanodiscus) infection of Alnus tenuifolia that is resulting in widespread growth suppression, branch dieback, and ramet mortality of the host throughout south-central and interior Alaska. Replicated sites were selected along the Tanana River in interior Alaska, along the Eagle River in the Anchorage Basin, and along Quartz Creek on the Kenai Peninsula. All stems within large (300 to 900 m2 plots) were measured, permanently tagged (if > 4 cm diameter DBH) and canker infection described. Binary codes for progressive states of canker infection were noted for every stem. It is these data that are listed in this file. Additional data on nitrogen fixation rates, nodule biomass, leaf and soil chemistry, and Frankia haplotype characterization using PCR/RFLP were collected. These additional data sets will be posted separately.
