Dataset for "Design optimization of a phase-change capacitive sensor for irreversible temperature threshold monitoring and its eco-friendly and wireless implementation"

This dataset contains the data collected during the SNSF BRIDGE GREENsPACK project (Grant no. 187223) in association with the recent publication entitled “Design optimization of a phase-change capacitive sensor for irreversible temperature threshold monitoring and its eco-friendly and wireless implementation”. This work aims to study the capacitive response of a resonating capacitive device coated with phase changing material (jojoba oil) as it melts when crossing its melting temperature. Several configuration were simulated with different electrode spacing, oil volume and encapsulation thickness and the induced changes in capacitance were tested experimentaly. An eco-friendly implementation of the optimized spiral resonating devices was tested wirelessly over a custom made near field antenna and the frequency of resonance was measured as the oil melted over the structure, irreversibly changing its resonance frequency. The data that was collected in the frame of this work is present in this repository. More information about the content of the dataset is present in the included README file.

Lithium recovery from brines by lithium membrane flow capacitive deionization (Li-MFCDI) – A proof of concept

Dataset to H.M. Saif et al., Journal of Membrane Science Letters, Volume 3, Issue 2, November 2023, 100059

The demand of lithium for electric vehicles and energy storage devices is increasing rapidly, thus new sources of
lithium (such as seawater and natural or industrial brines), as well as sustainable methods for its recovery, will
need to be explored/developed soon. This work presents a novel electromembrane process, called Lithium
Membrane Flow Capacitive Deionization (Li-MFCDI), which was tested to recover lithium from a synthetic
geothermal brine containing a much higher mass concentration of sodium than lithium (more than 650 times).
Specifically, a ceramic lithium-selective membrane was integrated into a flow capacitive deionization (FCDI)
cell, which was specifically designed, and 3D printed, to allow simultaneous charging and regeneration of the
employed flow electrodes. Despite the extremely high Na+/Li+ mass ratio in the feed stream, 99.98% of the
sodium was rejected and the process selectivity for lithium over other monovalent cations was 141 ± 5.85 for
Li+/Na+ and 46 ± 1.46 for Li+/K+. The Li-MFCDI process exhibited a stable behaviour over a 7-day test period,
and the estimated energy consumption was 16.70 ± 1.63 kWh/kg of Li+ recovered in the draw solution. These
results demonstrate promising potential of the Li-MFCDI for the sustainable lithium recovery from saline streams.

Capacitive resistive monopolar radiofrequency at 448 kHz plus exercise versus exercise alone for subacromial pain: Randomized sham-controlled clinical trial.

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of thermal and sub-thermal capacitive resistive 448kHz monopolar radiofrequency (CRMRF) plus exercise compared to Sham CRMRF plus exercise on pain, functionality, and quality of life in patients with subacromial pain.

Material and methods: A randomized sham-controlled double blind clinical trial was designed. Eighty-one participants with subacromial pain were enrolled and randomly assigned to three intervention groups (Thermal CRMRF, Sub-thermal CRMRF, and Sham CRMRF). The main outcomes variables were for pain: visual analogic scale (VAS) and pressure pain threshold, for functionality: shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI) and Quick- Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (Quick-DASH) and for quality of life: European Quality of Live Five Dimensions (EQ-5D). Variables were measured at baseline, post-intervention, and at one-month and three months follow-ups. An intention-to-treat analysis was realized.

Results: All three groups statistically (p<0.01) and clinically significantly improved pain (VAS) and functionality (SPADI) respect to baseline at post-intervention and follow-up periods. The improvement in Quick-DASH outcome respect to baseline at one month follow-up was clinically relevant only in the thermal CRMRF group (-16.8 points; CI95% -27.3 to -6.3). Thermal-CRMRF group showed a greater effect on Quick-DASH at one month follow-up (-14.1 points, CI95% -28.1 to -0.1) compared with Sham-CRMRF group. EQ-5D measure at one month follow-up only improved in thermal-CRMRF group (0.12 points; CI95% 0.01 to 0.23). Only thermal-CRMRF group improved the pressure pain threshold outcome (0.42 kg/cm2 CI95% 0.05 to 0.79) at post-treatment.
