Comparing vertical accretion, organic carbon (C) sequestration, and nitrogen burial between a natural, never diked tidal salt marsh and a hydrologically restored tidal salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia.
Restoration of tidal marshes throughout the 20th century have attempted to bring back important functions of natural tidal systems. In this study, vertical accretion, organic carbon (C) sequestration, and nitrogen burial were compared between a natural, never diked tidal salt marsh and a hydrologically restored tidal salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia to examine the impacts of restoration years later. On Sapelo Island there are two marshes near the University of Georgia Marine Institute, one of which is a natural marsh, and one of which is a restored marsh. The restored marsh had been diked in 1948, and the dike was breached, allowing for the marsh to be restored, in 1956. Soil cores were collected from both marshes, and the sediments were analysed for Nitrogen and Carbon concentrations and bulk density. This analysis was used to determine accretion rates for the two marshes as well as changes in the restored marsh since the dike was breached. Nitrogen burial, carbon sequestration, and soil accretion in the restored marsh as compared to the natural marsh were the focus of this study.
Influences of the 1855 AD Huanghe (Yellow River) Relocation on Sedimentary Organic Carbon Burial in the Southern Yellow Sea

This is the original data used in the manuscript titled "Influences of the 1855 AD Huanghe (Yellow River) Relocation on Sedimentary Organic Carbon Burial in the Southern Yellow Sea" which has been accepted by Frontiers in Marine Science. The data is from a box-core HH12 recovered from the southern Yellow Sea (123.50°E, 35.00°N; core length: 48 cm; water depth: 77 m; time span: ~300 yr). This excel includes depth, year, TOC, TN, biomarkers and other proxy record.

Full Article at: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2022.824617/full

Authigenic carbonate burial within the Late Devonian Western Canada Sedimentary Basin and its impact on the global carbon cycle

The complete dataset for the research project entitled Authigenic carbonate burial within the Late Devonian Western Canada Sedimentary Basin and its impact on the global carbon cycle. Within this zip file includes an excel file compiling a list of rock samples and their corresponding stable carbon and oxygen isotope compositions as well as their inorganic carbon content. Rock samples are grouped according to formation name, depositional environment and stratigraphic height. Along with the excel data compilation are two supplementary figures meant to accompany the publication of this research. Figure S1 illustrates coulometry-measured inorganic carbon content of shale samples plotted with respect to their respective IRMS beam area. Figure S2 illustrates a rolling window analysis of the covariability between the d13C and d18O composition of each sample grouped according to their respective core and field sections. A window size of 20 samples was used.

Data from: Carbon burial in Cornell's experimental ponds

Ponds are globally abundant and important to the global carbon cycle. While ponds have large greenhouse gas emissions, they may also sequester large amounts of carbon in their sediments. Here, we studied carbon burial rates in 22 experimental ponds without watersheds, where carbon sequestration comes solely from autochthonous primary production. The ponds were built identically in 1964 at Cornell University, and have since experienced different management strategies. This dataset includes two files: (1) spreadsheets related to carbon burial calculations (e.g., measuring sediment thickness, estimates of loss-on-ignition, and carbon burial rates), and (2) spreadsheets of historical management practices for our study ponds. These datasets accompany a manuscript accepted at Limnology and Oceanography Letters.

Data from: Hot tops, cold bottoms: synergistic climate warming and shielding effects increase carbon burial in lakes
In this article, we challenge the notion that global warming stimulates organic matter min-eralization and increases greenhouse gas emissions in lakes via direct temperature effects. We show that the interactive effects of warming and transparency loss due to eutrophica-tion or browning override effects of atmospheric warming alone. Thermal shielding ena-bles a longer and more stable stratification that results in bottom-water cooling, prolonged anoxia and enhanced carbon preservation in a large proportion of global lakes. These ef-fects are strongest in shallow lakes where an additional burial of 4.5 Tg C y-1 increases current global estimates by 9%. Despite more burial, the net global warming potential of lakes will increase via enhanced methane production, related to prolonged periods of an-oxia, rather than warming. Our understanding of how whole-lake carbon cycling responds to climate change needs revision, as the synergistic influence of warming and transparency loss has much broader ecosystem level functional consequences.
