Simultaneously Enhanced Tenacity, Rupture Work, and Thermal Conductivity of Carbon Nanotubes Fibers by Raising Effective Tube Portion

Although individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are superior as constituents to polymer chains, the mechanical and thermal properties of CNT fibers (CNTFs) remain inferior to synthetic fibers due to the failure of embedding CNTs effectively in superstructures. Conventional techniques resulted in a mild improvement of target properties while achieving parity at best on others. Here, a Double-Drawing technique is developed to rearrange the constituent CNTs in both mesoscale and nanoscale morphology. Consequently, the mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting CNTFs can simultaneously reach their highest performances with specific strength ~3.30 N/tex, work of rupture ~70 J/g, and thermal conductivity ~354 W/m/K, despite starting from low-crystallinity materials (IG:ID~5). The processed CNTFs are more versatile than comparable carbon fiber, Zylon and Dyneema. Based on evidence of load transfer efficiency on individual CNTs measured with In-Situ-Stretching-Raman, we find the main contributors to property enhancements are the increasing of the effective tube contribution, in addition to the known optimization on CNTs alignment and stacking.

Biobased Structurally Compatible Polymer Blends Based on Lignin and Thermoplastic Elastomer Polyurethane as Carbon Fiber Precursors

The production of carbon fibers based on lignin reduces the cost and the environmental impact associated with carbon fiber manufacturing. However, the melt processing of lignin as a carbon fiber precursor is challenging due to its brittleness and limited thermoplastic behavior. For this reason we produce biopolymer blends based on Alcell organosolv hardwood lignin, hydroxypropyl modified Kraft hardwood, and a thermoplastic elastomer polyurethane (TPU). Samples with TPU content greater than 30% showed excellent melt processability and carbonization yield (35% carbon yield for the samples containing 30% of TPU). The thermal properties were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, rheology and thermogravimetric analysis. Fourier infrared measurements were utilized to explain the lignin/TPU interactions which governed the thermal and rheological behavior of the blends. SEM analysis showed that the blends produce a homogeneous structure which was void free after carbonization. These structurally complementary biopolymeric blends should open up new avenues for lignin valorization and bring closer the realization of the production of carbon fibers from biosources.

Data for: New approach for processing recycled carbon staple fiber yarns to unidirectional reinforced recycled carbon staple fiber tape

This data set was generated at Leibniz-Institut für Verbundwerkstoffe GmbH in the project "Process analysis of the pseudo-plastic deformation behavior of unidirectional reinforced staple fiber organo sheets" is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) – funding reference 471480678. The goal was to develop a novel process approach for the further processing of staple fiber yarns made from long recycled carbon fibers (rCF) and polyamide 6 (PA6) to highly aligned staple fiber tapes. For this purpose, the input material as well as the manufactured tapes were characterized and examined in thermal analyses. In addition, the influence of the process parameters in the tape manufacturing process on the width and thickness of the tapes and the mechanical properties were investigated. The flexural and tensile properties were then compared with a laminate wound from the staple fiber yarns. The data set is divided in the results of the TGA, DSC, laser profile scans, tensile tests and flexural tests.

The utilization of micro-mesoporous carbon-based filler in the P84 hollow fiber membrane for gas separation

This research carried out a unique micro-mesoporous carbon particle incorporation into P84 co-polyimide membrane for improved gas separation performance. The carbon filler was prepared using a hard template method from zeolite and called as zeolite templated carbon (ZTC). This research aims to study the loading amount of ZTC into P84 co-polyimide toward the gas separation performance. The ZTC was prepared using simple impregnation method of sucrose into hard template of zeolite Y. The SEM result showing a dispersed ZTC particle on the membrane surface and cross-section. The pore size distribution of ZTC revealed that the particle consists of two characteristics of micro and mesoporous region. It was noted that with only 0.5 wt% of ZTC addition, the permeability was boosted up from 4.68 to 7.06 and from 8.95 to 13.15 Barrer, for CO2 and H2 respectively as compared to the neat membrane. On the other hand, the optimum loading was at 1 wt%, where the membrane received thermal stability boost of 10% along with the 62.4 and 35% of selectivity boost of CO2/CH4 and H2/CH4, respectively. It was noticed that the position of the filler on the membrane surface was significantly affecting the gas transport mechanism of the membrane. Overall, te results demonstrated that the addition of ZTC with proper filler position has potential candidate to be applicable in the gas separation involving CO2 and H2.

image classification dataset on carbon fiber reinforcement quality control

Image classification dataset on carbon fiber quality control.

To represent a practical quality control problem, a dataset was generated using carbon plain weave with a grammage of 200g/m². Pieces of the weave, measuring 300x300 mm², were cut using a CNC cutter table. Two such pieces were stacked, with a binder applied between them for shape stability after the forming process. The formed stacks were then scanned using a high-resolution camera mounted on a robotic arm, resulting in 500 images of the textiles' surfaces in three-dimensional shape. The images were then cropped to 341x384 pixels patches and transformed to grayscale.

Each patch was classified into one of three classes: normal textile, gap, or fold. Images that were blurred, out of focus, or had bad contrast were sorted out. The dataset has not yet been released, and will be available upon the acceptance of the document.

Data for: Methodological choices in size and density fractionation of soil carbon reserves – A case study on wood fiber sludge amended soils

A myriad of methods is currently being applied in soil carbon research encompassing major variation in the basic principles and minor variation in details. The most proper method is dependent on the research question and soil type, wherefore a consensus will likely never be reached, and it is difficult to label any method inappropriate. Both the fundamental and the subtle choices in methodology affect the results, wherefore increasing the method-related understanding of soil, agricultural and environmental scientists is of utmost importance. In scientific literature, methods are often not thoroughly presented, let alone reasoned. With this data, we discuss methodological choices in soil carbon fractionation. In addition, our case study follows the effects of pulp mill sludge amendments on soil carbon in a Luvic Stagnosol and Dystric Arenosol. Organic materials are being applied to soil to increase productivity and soil carbon storage. Our results show the difficulties of accumulating carbon in the stable, mineral associated pool, when the carbon content is initially relatively high, and the sorption capacity of the mineral phase already largely occupied.
