Annual Article Processing Charges (APCs) and number of gold and hybrid open access articles in Web of Science indexed journals published by Elsevier, Sage, Springer-Nature, Taylor & Francis and Wiley 2015-2018

Dataset of annual Article Processing Charges (APCs) for 6,252 journals from 2015 to 2018. The dataset contains annual APCs for journals indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) and published by the oligopoly of academic publishers (Elsevier, Sage, Springer-Nature, Taylor & Francis, Wiley). It also includes an estimate of the total APCs paid by the academic community based on the number of gold and hybrid articles published between 2015 and 2018. The dataset was created using publication data from WoS, OA status from Unpaywall and annual APC prices from open datasets (Matthias, 2020; Morrison, 2021) and historical fees retrieved via the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.

Detailed methods and findings are reported in the following journal article

Butler, L.-A., Matthias, L., Simard, M.-A., Mongeon, P., & Haustein, S. Preprint: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8322555

Description of included files (v1):

APCs.csv: contains the annual APCs for gold and hybrid OA journals indexed in Web of Science published by the oligopoly of academic publishers (Elsevier, Sage, Springer-Nature, Taylor & Francis, Wiley) between 2015 and 2018 including the total estimate of APCs paid per journal per year. It contains APC data for 18,846 journal-year-OA status combinations.

countries.csv: contains the fractionalized number of annual gold and hybrid OA articles by oligopoly publishers between 2015 and 2018 and the total estimate of fractionalized APCs paid per country per journal per year.

oecd.csv: contains the fractionalized number of annual gold and hybrid OA articles by oligopoly publishers between 2015 and 2018 and the total estimate of fractionalized APCs per discipline per journal per year.

ReadMe.csv: contains a description of the variables used in APCs.csv, countries.csv and oecd.csv.

Numbers and shares of Open Access Journals in Sociology charging publication fees (article processing charges APCs)

On the eleventh of June 2014 the Directory of Open Access Journals DOAJ listed 109 sociology journals. For these journals the information on publication charges was wrong in more than 10 % of the cases. Focusing on the eleven journals that - according to the DOAJ - used (always or conditionally) APCs the situation is even worse: 10 of these journals (90,9 %) were categorized wrongly.

In fact only three out of these 109 journals (2,75 %) are charging their authors. The files contain corrected information for the 109 journals including the sums charged by the journals.

Synthetic Dataset of charging processes by electric vehicles at workplace in Germany

The dataset shows eight cluster groups that depict the mobility behavior of electric vehicle users in the employee context. For this purpose, 23.9 million data entries were analyzed, corresponding to 37,238 charging sessions. These data were collected over the year 2023. The 220 charging points were exclusively accessible to employees (private use case). From the data, cluster groups were derived using the Gaussian Mixture Model, and a synthetic dataset was generated through Monte Carlo sampling.

The dataset consists of 8000 synthetic profiles, offering a robust scientific basis. By retaining the same statistical attributes as the empirical data, the synthetic profiles represent eight different mobility clusters, each containing 1000 entries, including full-time and part-time employees, shift workers, pool vehicle users, and opportunists. Each cluster is represented by the mean parking start hours (arrival time - in decimal hours), mean parking duration (in decimal hours), the average energy recharged, and the average charging duration, each including the cluster-specific standard deviation and median.

Further information can be obtained from the upcoming publication: "Synthetic Dataset of charging processes by electric vehicles at workplace in Germany."

All data of the manuscript "A self-sustained charge neutrality lightning model containing the channel decay and reactivation process" submitted to Geophysical Research Letters

The data supports the manuscript entitled "A self-sustained charge neutrality lightning model containing the channel decay and reactivation process”. Microsoft Notepad can open the *.txt files, they contain the channel information of two intracloud flashes (IC1 and IC2) and the channel elctrical parameters at the first fork of positive or negative leader channels. A normal video player software can open Movies S1.avi, and it shows the entire development process of IC1 discharge.

The data can be used freely for scientific purposes with the appropriate citation.

The adoption of Article Processing Charges as a business model by Brazilian Open Access journals

These are the raw data behind the publication:

Appel, A.L.; Albagli, S. The adoption of Article Processing Charges as a business model by Brazilian Open Access journals. Transinformação, 31:e180045, 2019. https://doi.org/10.1590/2318-0889201931e180045

Different funding and business model alternatives for Open Access to scientific publication have been discussed and tried, either by Gold open access journals or by the ‘hybrid’ ones. A growing number of both types of scholarly journals have adopted a publication fee – more specifically an Article Processing Charge – as their open access business model, a procedure that has been the subject of controversies. The objective of this study is to characterize Brazilian open access journals that adopt article processing charges. The main contribution of this study is to audit and support decision making of editorial policies and business models for open access that are being proposed by and for Brazilian journals. We defined a sample of Brazilian open access journals using article processing charges extracted from the Directory of Open Access Journals database in April 2018 along with their classification in the Scimago Journal Ranking, Journal Citation Reports and Qualis Capes system, considered as an indicator of prestige of academic journals. The study reveals that a small number of Brazilian open access journals are currently applying article processing charges, with practices varying mainly according to fields of study, types of organization and classification according to the Qualis system.
