Chemical upcycling of polyethylene, polypropylene, and mixtures to high-value surfactants
<p>Conversion of plastic wastes to fatty acids is an attractive means to supplement the sourcing of these high-value, high-volume chemicals. Herein, we report a method for transforming polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) at ~80% conversion to fatty acids with number average molar masses up to ~700 Da and 670 Da, respectively. The process is applicable to municipal PE and PP wastes and their mixtures. Temperature-gradient thermolysis is the key to controllably degrading PE and PP into waxes and inhibiting producing small molecules. The waxes are upcycled to fatty acids by oxidation over manganese stearate and subsequent saponification. PP ꞵ-scission produces more olefin wax and yields higher acid-number fatty acids than PE. We further convert the fatty acids to high-value, large-market-volume surfactants. Industrial-scale technoeconomic analysis suggests economic viability without subsidies.</p>

Equilibrium chemical composition of impact-produced hot cloud during isentropic expansion. The initial temperature T0 is 4000 K, the initial pressure P0 is 5, 20, and 80 bar. Calculations are performed using the EQL program. Abundances of considered species are presented in molar fractions. The elemental composition of impact-produced cloud is taken as a mixture of CI chondrite, mare basalts, and ferroan anorthosite with a ratio of 1:25:25 by mass as in Berezhnoy (2013).
<p>Considered species include ions, neutral gas-phase species, and condensates. Ions are written as ...(+) (for example, Al(+)). Condensates (solids and liquids) are written as ...(c) or ...(c;...). Examples of condensates are Al2O3(c) and Al2O3(c; gamma). For species marked in theirs names as (cr, l) in Gurvich et al. (1989) (for example, Al2O3(cr, l)) it is possible to determine a state of matter (liquid or solid). The content of studied species is 0 if the relative molar fraction is less than 1e-21. </p> <p>The elemental composition of impact-produced cloud is taken as a mixture of CI chondrite, mare basalts, and ferroan anorthosite with a ratio of 1:25:25 by mass as in Berezhnoy (2013). </p> <p>Calculations of the equilibrium chemical composition of impact-produced clouds were performed starting from an initial temperature of 4000 K at different initial pressures of 5, 20, and 80 bar, corresponding to entropies equal to 7.2, 5.56, and 4.25 kJ / (kg×K), respectively. </p> <p>Berezhnoy, A.A., 2013. REBCO mixtures with large difference in rare-earth ion size: superconducting properties of chemical solution deposition-grown Yb1−xSmxBa2Cu3O7−δ films
<p>Yb1-<i>x</i>Sm<i>x</i>Ba2Cu3O7-d films have been prepared by chemical solution deposition following the Extremely-Low-Fluorine route, which allows reducing the fluorine content by 93% with respect to standard TFA solutions. The obtained results show that, on the one hand, <i>T</i>c remains stable at ~ 90 K with Sm content up to <i>x </i>= 0.5 where <i>T</i>c starts to increase towards the values of pure SmBCO films of ~ 95 K. On the other hand, the critical current densities <i>J</i>c of the pure SmBCO films are the largest at 77 K, where the influence of a higher <i>T</i>c is very relevant, while at lower temperatures and low fields, the mixed films reach larger values. This demonstrates that mixing rare earth elements <i>RE</i> in <i>RE</i>Ba2Cu3O7-d causes a change in the pinning properties of the films and reveals the importance of selecting adequate <i>RE</i>BCO compounds according to the temperature and magnetic field region where a specific application operates.</p>

Data from: Comparing bee species responses to chemical mixtures: common response patterns?
Pollinators in agricultural landscapes can be exposed to mixtures of pesticides and environmental pollutants. Existing mixture toxicity modelling approaches, such as the models of concentration addition and independent action and the mechanistic DEBtox framework have been previously shown as valuable tools for understanding and ultimately predicting joint toxicity. Here we apply these mixture models to investigate the potential to interpret the effects of semi-chronic binary mixture exposure for three bee species: Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris and Osmia bicornis within potentiation and mixture toxicity experiments. In the potentiation studies, the effect of the insecticide dimethoate with added propiconazole fungicide and neonicotinoid insecticide clothianidin with added tau-fluvalinate pyrethroid acaricide showed no difference in toxicity compared to the single chemical alone. Clothianidin toxicity showed a small scale, but temporally conserved increase in exposure conducted in the presence of propiconazole, particularly for B. terrestris and O. bicornis, the latter showing a near three-fold increase in clothianidin toxicity in the presence of propiconazole. In the mixture toxicity studies, the dominant response patterns were of additivity, however, binary mixtures of clothianidin and dimethoate in A. mellifera, B. terrestris and male O. bicornis there was evidence of a predominant antagonistic interaction. Given the ubiquitous nature of exposures to multiple chemicals, there is an urgent need to consider mixture effects in pollinator risk assessments. Our analyses suggest that current models, particularly those that utilise time-series data, such as DEBtox, can be used to identify additivity as the dominant response pattern and also those examples of interactions, even when small-scale, that may need to be taken into account during risk assessment.
