Plant abundance data from the 2016 Chimney Tops 2 Fire in Gatlinburg, TN

We surveyed understory plant communities during the second growing season (2018) after the 2016 fire at sites in WUI near Gatlinburg (hereafter “exurban”) and in GSMNP (hereafter "natural"). We chose sites based on dominant forest vegetation type (available for GSMNP) and elevation to minimize the potential confounding effects of these variables. We used stratified random sampling in ESRI ArcMap to select 18 sites, nine in natural locations and nine in exurban locations; within the location type we randomly selected sites to represent fire severity categories, three no burn, three low/medium burn, and three high burn. In the field, we randomly selected two 1x1 m permanent plots to survey and identify each individual plant in the understory to at least genus level, and to count the number of individuals for each taxon. We generated taxa lists and count of individuals per taxa by aggregating plot level records by month. Individuals that could not be identified to at least genus level due to immature characteristics or herbivore damage were assigned observational taxonomic unit numbers (OTUs).

Chimney Pole Marsh Erosion-Camera Images and Video 2009-2012

This data consists of a time series of image and video files showing erosion at the western edge of Chimney Pole Marsh, in Northampton Co. Virginia. Images depict the edge of a salt marsh as it erodes. Images and videos have a time stamp (YYYYmmdd_HHMMss) embedded in their file name and also in the upper left of the images themselves. All dates and times are in Eastern Standard Time. Images and videos are taken once ever 30 minutes at 25 and 55 minutes after the hour. Still image JPEG (.jpg) files are 1600x1200 pixels in size. Videos are encoded as MPEG-4 (.mp4) files with a resolution of 400x304 at 8.05 frames per second. They were collected by a 2 mega-pixel Vivotek IP7161 security camera attached to a post (approximately 3-m above the marsh surface). The camera was removed when the marsh was sufficiently eroded that the camera platform was imperiled. There are some gaps in the data caused by network and electrical problems.

A time series of images of egret and cormorant colonies on Chimney Pole Marsh, VA 2010-2011

This dataset contains images used to observe double-crested cormorant and great egret nests on Chimney Pole Marsh, VA, a low-lying barrier marsh on the Atlantic coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. The camera was in operation June 15, 2010 to July 7, 2010, Aug, 3, 4 and 31, 2010, and May 10 through Aug. 11, 2011. Images were captured roughly once every 10 seconds during the day, resulting in a total of 287,564 images.

Gin Chimney

All that remains of a 19th century cotton mill is its brick chimney. Once these obelisks were a common sight along the lower Mississippi, but weather and time are toppling them. I will try to reshoot this location with more even light, but what you see is the weather I had. Shot with a DJI Mavic 2. Multiple GPS-enabled, point-of-interest orbits at 1.5-2km/h, camera firing every 2 seconds, were flown. JPGs, auto settings, circular polarizing filter. Lightly processed in Lightroom. 291 x ~10mb JPEGs. Magpie Mine Square Chimney

Magpie Mine (Derbyshire, UK) was the last working lead mine in the Peak District. It is probably the best surviving example of a 19th century lead mine in the UK. The Square Chimney is one of the oldest structures on the site, and was originally built in 1840 to serve a steam-powered winding engine. The extensive surface remains have been managed by the Peak District Mines Historical Society since 1962. https://pdmhs.co.uk/magpie-mine-peak-district/ The model was created from 75 aerial photographs. Data from: Three-dimensional trajectories and network analyses of group behaviour within chimney swift flocks during approaches to the roost

Chimney swifts (Chaetura pelagica) are highly manoeuvrable birds notable for roosting overnight in chimneys, in groups of hundreds or thousands of birds, before and during their autumn migration. At dusk, birds gather in large numbers from surrounding areas near a roost site. The whole flock then employs an orderly, but dynamic, circling approach pattern before rapidly entering a small aperture en masse. We recorded the three-dimensional trajectories of ≈1 800 individual birds during a 30 min period encompassing flock formation, circling, and landing, and used these trajectories to test several hypotheses relating to flock or group behaviour. Specifically, we investigated whether the swifts use local interaction rules based on topological distance (e.g. the n nearest neighbours, regardless of their distance) rather than physical distance (e.g. neighbours within x m, regardless of number) to guide interactions, whether the chimney entry zone is more or less cooperative than the surrounding flock, and whether the characteristic subgroup size is constant or varies with flock density. We found that the swift flock is structured around local rules based on physical distance, that subgroup size increases with density, and that there exist regions of the flock that are less cooperative than others, in particular the chimney entry zone.

Marsh boundary of marsh bordering in Chimney Pole, Virginia Coast Reserve

We present high-resolution field measurements of five sites along the United States Atlantic Coast, and cellular automata simulations, to investigate the erosion of marsh boundaries by wave action. According to our analysis, when salt marshes are exposed to high wave energy conditions their boundaries erode uniformly. The resulting erosion events follow a Gaussian distribution, yielding a relatively smooth shoreline. On the contrary, when wind waves are weak and the local marsh resistance is strong, jagged marsh boundaries form. In this case, erosion episodes have a long-tailed frequency magnitude distribution with numerous low-magnitude events, but also high-magnitude episodes. The logarithmic frequency magnitude distribution suggests the emergence of a critical state for marsh boundaries, which would make the prediction of failure events impossible. Internal physical processes allowing salt marshes to reach this critical state are geotechnical and biological, and related to the nonhomogeneity of salt marshes whose material discontinuities act as stress raisers.
