Figure 4 in Chronic stress from fishing gear entanglement is recorded in baleen from a bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus)

Figure 4. Glucocorticoid hormone profile in baleen from entangled bowhead whale 17B6. Baleen GC concentrations (ng/g) are shown as red circles for cortisol and orange circles for corticosterone. Sample dates were estimated based on an annual baleen growth rate of 17.5 cm/yr, starting with the harvest date (5 May 2017) on the right side of the bottom x-axis and extending retrospectively to approximately November 2005 on the left side of the x-axis (tick marks are months). Sampling locations along the baleen plate are shown on the top x-axis, and background gridlines represent the 1.25 or 2.5 cm sampling intervals used, starting at the plate base.

Figure 3. The first 10 in Chronic stress from fishing gear entanglement is recorded in baleen from a bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus)

Figure 3. The first 10 cm of the baleen plate from bowhead whale 17B6 showing a measuring tape attached to the labial margin of the plate to guide sampling intervals. Samples were drilled every 1.25 cm (~26 d intervals) across the horizontal growth lines along the plate for the first 35 cm of growth to maximize the possibility of capturing data on the entanglement event from more recent baleen growth, and every 2.5 cm (~52 d intervals) for the reminder of the plate to establish baseline levels of GCs prior to the entanglement. Samples were collected using a hand-held Dremel rotary tool to produce pulverized baleen powder for glucocorticoid hormone analysis.

Figure 2. Fishing rope recovered from bowhead whale 17B6 in Chronic stress from fishing gear entanglement is recorded in baleen from a bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus)

Figure 2. Fishing rope recovered from bowhead whale 17B6 included two types of 19 mm diameter rope. Segment (#1) appeared to be white nylon rope, while segments (#s 2, 4, 5) were blue-flecked and most likely a copolymer rope. Segment (#3) was line used by the hunters during the harvest and was not part of the whale entanglement. Fraying of the rope ends was consistent with cut ends that had not been heat sealed or whipped. It was not possible to determine the status of the gear at the time of entanglement.

Behavioral effects of chronic stress in Carioca High- and Low-conditioned Freezing rats

Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) is a widely used model to study stress-coping strategies in rodents. Different factors have been shown to influence whether animals adopt passive or active coping responses to CUMS. Individual adaptation and susceptibility to the environment seem to play a critical role in this process. To further investigate this relationship, we examined the effects of CUMS on Carioca high- and low-conditioned freezing rats (CHF and CLF, respectively), bidirectional lines of animals selected for high and low freezing in response to contextual cues that were previously associated with footshocks. For this purpose, the behavior of CHF and CLF animals was evaluated in the contextual fear conditioning, open field, elevated T maze, and forced swimming tests before and after 21 days of CUMS. Animals kept under standard housing conditions were used as controls. For all tests, CHF rats were more susceptible to the effects of CUMS compared to CLF and control groups. CHF animals exposed to CUMS displayed a reduction in freezing behavior, decreased number of entries and time spent in the center of the open field, greater latencies to become immobile, and increased avoidance and escaping behaviors in the elevated T maze. Overall, these findings support the hypothesis that a heightened susceptibility to the environment exerts a strong influence on coping responses to chronic stress.

Traumatic events, post-traumatic stress disorder, and proxy measures for central sensitization in chronic pain patients of a German university outpatient pain clinic

This dataset was acquired at Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany. The study complied with the Declaration of Helsinki, and was approved by the local ethics committee. All subjects gave written informed consent, and consent to use their data anonymously for research purposes. The study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05190367).

Between February 2019 and July 2020, 914 patients who visited our outpatient pain department gave written consent to use their routinely collected data anonymously for research purposes. Participants were divided into four groups depending on their trauma severity: (1) no trauma; (2) accidental trauma (e.g. illness, accident, natural disaster); (3) interpersonal trauma (e.g. assault, rape, war); (4) PTSD (diagnosed according to ICD-10). Patients fulfilling two or more categories were assigned to the highest group.

Data were collected using the SymptomMapper application [1]. Participants provided information about their traumas, current pain intensity (visual analogue scale, VAS (0-100) [2]), mean and maximal pain in the last 4 weeks (VAS (0-100)), sleep impairment (VAS (0-100)), acceptable pain (VAS (0-100)), pain disability index (PDI [3]), pain area (digital drawings), pain widespreadness (widespread pain index, WPI [4], derived from drawings), stress (patient health questionnaire, German version, PHQ-D [5]), anxiety (PHQ-D), depression (PHQ-D), and somatization symptoms (PHQ-D).

This dataset contains the raw data as well as necessary scripts for reproducing the results of this study.

References
##########

[1] Neubert TA, Dusch M, Karst M, Beissner F. Data for: Chronic stress hinders sensory axon regeneration via impairing mitochondrial cristae and OXPHOS

Spinal cord injury (SCI) often leads to physical limitations, chronic pain, significant life changes, and social isolation, increasing the risk of chronic psychological stress such as anxiety and depression. Despite the recognition of the negative effects of chronic stress on SCI recovery, the mechanisms linking stress and regeneration are not fully understood. In this study, we examined the impact of chronic stress on primary sensory axon regeneration in a mouse model of preconditioning lesions. Our findings showed that chronic stress caused mitochondrial damage and energy crisis within primary sensory neurons, hindering the regrowth of their central axons. The stress hormone corticosterone was identified as a critical factor in this process, impacting satellite glial cells instead of neurons by suppressing Kir4.1 expression and leading to increased neuronal hyperactivity and elevated ROS levels. These high levels of ROS altered the shape of the mitochondrial cristae and disrupted ATP production, which is essential for powering axonal regeneration. Our results highlight the importance of addressing psychological stress in SCI patients to promote sensory-motor rehabilitation.

Impact of prolonged chronic social isolation stress on behavior and multifractal complexity of metabolic rate in Octodon degus

We investigated the effects of prolonged chronic social isolation stress on behavioral, cognitive, and physiological performance in the social, long-lived rodent Octodon degus. Degu pups were separated into two social stress treatments: control (CTRL) and chronically isolated (CI) individuals from post-natal and post-weaning until adulthood. We quantified anxiety-like behavior and cognitive performance with behavioral tests. Additionally, we measured their basal metabolic rate (BMR). Data include behavioral tests and physiological traits (body mass and Basal Metabolic Rate).
