All adjustments necessary to fill in the data gaps in this file are documented at the beginning of &#39;HEI_analysis&#39;.</p> <p>&#39;offsets&#39; contains data on the type(s) of offsets purchased by each school in their carbon neutral year (measured in metric tons). This data was assembled from a variety of sources which are documented at the beginning of &#39;HEI_analysis&#39;.</p> <p>&#39;carbon_neutral_years&#39; contains yearly counts of higher education neutrality goals that were reported to Second Nature as of November 2020.</p>

The order of the nodes was organized manually to represent better the Chapter 7 discussion. NPJ Climate Action AR6 scenarios database submission histograms by model family and project

<p>Based on submissions to the IPCC AR6 Scenarios Database, this datasets uses the metadata to construct histograms of the submitted scenarios by model family and project, noting the total submissions, vetted scenarios, and climate assessed scenarios. A total of 2304 scenarios were submitted to the global emissions database, of these, 618 did not passing vetting for sufficiently consistency with historical energy and emissions data, and a further 484 did not have sufficient data to perform a climate assessment, leaving a total of 1202 used in the primary assessment of scenarios.&nbsp;</p> <p>The database based on the scenario metadata. The &lsquo;model family&rsquo; was determined by removing version numbers from the full model name. The &lsquo;project family&rsquo; was obtained using the &lsquo;Scenario family&rsquo; variable in metadata, supplemented by manually checking against cited literature. The classification of vetted scenarios was based on the variable &lsquo;Historical vetting&rsquo; and the climate assessment on the &lsquo;Climate Category&rsquo;.</p> <p>This version is based on version 1.0 of the AR6 scenarios database.</p>

Data from: Combining role-play with interactive simulation to motivate informed climate action: evidence from the World Climate simulation

Climate change communication efforts grounded in the information deficit model have largely failed to close the gap between scientific and public understanding of the risks posed by climate change. In response, simulations have been proposed to enable people to learn for themselves about this complex and politically charged topic. Here we assess the impact of a widely-used simulation, World Climate, which combines a socially and emotionally engaging role-play with interactive exploration of climate change science through the C-ROADS climate simulation model. Participants take on the roles of delegates to the UN climate negotiations and are challenged to create an agreement that meets international climate goals. Their decisions are entered into C-ROADS, which provides immediate feedback about expected global climate impacts, enabling them to learn about climate change while experiencing the social dynamics of negotiations. We assess the impact of World Climate by analyzing pre- and post-survey results from &gt;2,000 participants in 39 sessions in eight nations. We find statistically significant gains in three areas: (i) knowledge of climate change causes, dynamics and impacts; (ii) affective engagement including greater feelings of urgency and hope; and (iii) a desire to learn and do more about climate change. Contrary to the deficit model, gains in urgency were associated with gains in participants' desire to learn more and intent to act, while gains in climate knowledge were not. Gains were just as strong among American participants who oppose government regulation of free markets - a political ideology that has been linked to climate change denial in the US - suggesting the simulation's potential to reach across political divides. The results indicate that World Climate offers a climate change communication tool that enables people to learn and feel for themselves, which together have the potential to motivate action informed by science.

Building consensus for ambitious climate action through the World Climate Simulation

<p>Sociopolitical values are an important driver of climate change beliefs, attitudes, and policy preferences. People with 'individualist-hierarchical' values favor individual freedom, competition, and clearly defined social hierarchies, while communitarian-egalitarians value interdependence and equality across gender, age, heritage, and ethnicity. In the US, individualist-hierarchs generally perceive less risk from climate change and express lower support for actions to mitigate it than communitarian-egalitarians. Exposure to scientific information does little to change these views. Here, we ask if a widely-used experiential simulation, World Climate, can help overcome these barriers. World Climate combines an engaging role-play with an interactive computer model of the climate system. We examine pre- and post-World Climate survey responses from 2,080 participants in the US and use a general linear mixed model approach to analyze interactions among participants' sociopolitical values and gains in climate change knowledge, affect, and intent to take action. As expected, prior to the simulation, participants holding individualist-hierarchical values had lower levels of climate change knowledge, felt less urgency, and expressed lower intent to act than those holding communitarian-egalitarian values. However, individualist-hierarchs made significantly larger gains across all constructs, particularly urgency, than communitarian-egalitarians. Participants' sociopolitical values also shifted: those with individualistic-hierarchical values before the simulation showed a substantial, statistically significant shift toward a communitarian-egalitarian worldview. Simulation-based experiences like World Climate may help reduce polarization and build consensus towards science-based climate action.</p>

<div> <h2>Abstract</h2> <a href="https://github.com/AkiraSMori/BiodProd-ProtectArea/blob/main/README.md#abstract"></a></div> <p>Biodiversity loss and climate change are incontrovertibly intertwined, yet the nuanced interplay between these global challenges is often understated in policy dialogues. Here, we illustrate that conservation through protected areas can effectively preserve primary productivity and carbon capture in forests worldwide, which directly depend on tree diversity. However, we also discover that failing to mitigate future climate change has the potential to diminish the effectiveness of terrestrial protected areas in conserving tree diversity-dependent forest productivity, especially in warmer biomes. This holds true even under the most optimized selection of protected areas designed to meet the global biodiversity target of 30% protection by 2030. Thus, climate change mitigation is critical for the success of many conservation actions aimed at achieving global targets; otherwise, existing and future efforts to conserve biodiversity and their benefits to society could be in vain. Addressing anthropogenic climate change will sustain the many biodiversity-derived ecosystem benefits to society.</p>

What Do Firms Say in Reporting on Impacts of Climate Change? An Approach to Monitoring ESG Actions and Environmental Policy

<p>This paper focuses on &nbsp;two research questions &nbsp;arising from the 2010 U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) &nbsp;Advisory on climate change reporting: (1) How does the discussion of climate change &nbsp;in SEC filings change after the Advisory? and (2) What are firms talking about when they talk about climate change?<br> Findings &nbsp; were obtained from the 218,000 10-K filings to the SEC during the 2000--2019 period. The study develops and applies &nbsp;text mining methodology based on extracting information from the ``semantic associates&#39;&#39; in the &nbsp;``neighborhoods&#39;&#39; of indicative terms. On (1) it finds that climate change-related reporting does increase substantially after the SEC guidance. On (2) a nuanced picture emerges. Firms with comparatively larger transition risks tend to discuss climate change comparatively more, focusing on &nbsp;regulation-related topics. Firms exposed to the &nbsp;physical risks of climate change tend to discuss climate change somewhat less, focusing &nbsp;on meteorological topics. The results enrich our understanding regarding &nbsp;environmental policies and firms&#39; behaviors regarding climate change. Theoretical and practical implications are provided.</p>

Equity, community, and accountability: Leveraging a department-level climate survey as a tool for action

<p>Organizational climate is a key determinant of diverse aspects of success in work settings, including in academia. Power dynamics in higher education can result in inequitable experiences of workplace climate, potentially harming the well-being and productivity of employees. Quantifying experiences of climate across employment categories can help identify changes necessary to create a more equitable workplace for all. We developed and administered a climate survey within our academic workplace—the Department of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming—to evaluate experiences of climate across three employment categories: faculty, graduate students, and staff. Our survey included a combination of closed-response (e.g., Likert-scale) and open-ended questions. Most department members (82%) completed the survey, which was administered in fall 2021. Faculty generally reported more positive experiences than staff. Graduate students often fell between these two groups, though in some survey sections (e.g., mental health and well-being) students reported the most negative experiences of departmental climate. Three common themes emerged from the analysis of open-ended responses: equity, community, and accountability. We discuss how these themes correspond to concrete action items for improving our departmental climate, some of which have been implemented already, while others constitute future initiatives and/or require a collective push towards systemic change in academia. Finally, service work of this type often falls outside of job descriptions, requiring individuals to either work more or trade-off productivity in other areas that are formally evaluated. With the goal of minimizing this burden for others, we detail our process and provide the materials and framework necessary to streamline this process for other departments aiming to evaluate workplace climate as a key first step in building a positive work environment for all employees.</p>
