Modeled temperature and Marine heatwaves intensity in the coastal Northern Humboldt Current System
<p>This dataset includes the tridimensional modeled temperature and associated research data that support the results of the article "<strong><em>Comprehensive characterization of Marine Heatwaves in a coastal Northern Humboldt Current System regional model over recent decades</em></strong>".</p> <p>Specifically, it consists of three files (NetCDF format):<br> i) Northern_MHWs.nc, this file contains the daily modeled temperature (from 2000 to 2019) within the northern domain of analysis (3-8°S) within the 250 km nearshore band for each vertical layer ranging from 0 to 250m depth. In addition, daily snapshots of MHW intensity are also included by depth.<br> ii) Central_MHWs.mat, similar to the previous file, but for the central domain of analysis, from 8 to 13°S.<br> iii) Southern_MHWs.mat, similar to the previous file, but for the southern domain of analysis, from 13 to 18°S.</p>
Assessment of current and future invasive plants in protected dune habitats of the Atlantic coastal region for the LIFE DUNIAS project (LIFE20 NAT/BE/001442)
<p>This .csv file contains the raw data from the risk screening supplementing the LIFE DUNIAS horizon scan for (invasive) alien species in protected habitats of Atlantic coastal dune ecosystems (<a href="https://doi.org/10.21436/inbor.86703335">Adriaens et al. 2022</a>). We gladly refer to the annexes and methods section in this report for more explanation about the fields and their contained values.</p> <p>The file contains the following fields:</p> <p><em>TaxonName</em>: original taxonomic name of the considered alien species</p> <p><em>WorkName</em>: taxonomic name of the considered alien species after lumping of subspecies, closely related species of a complex, functionally similar species of the same genus (see chapter 3.1)</p> <p><em>hab_xxxx</em> (1110, 1130, 1140, 1210, 1230, 1310, 1320, 1330, 2110, 2120, 2130, 2140, 21A0, 2150, 2190, 2160, 2170, 2180): susceptibility of habitat for the alien species (4-digit code refering to the Annex I habitat under the Habitats Directive) </p> <p><em>occ_XX</em> (BE, FR, IE, NL, ES, UK, DK, DE, PT, ALL): occupancy of the alien species in different countries of the Atlantic European region (as the number of 10km<sup>2</sup> squares per country). Influence of past and current factors on the beta diversity of coastal lagoon fish communities in South America
<p><strong>Aim: </strong>We aimed to assess the relative influence of past (Quaternary paleodrainage characteristics) and current factors on the beta diversity of freshwater fishes in coastal lagoons and explore the main processes involved.</p> <p><strong>Location:</strong> Atlantic coast of South America. Taxon: Fishes (173 species)</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> We built a dataset of species occurrence in 129 lagoons across eight freshwater ecoregions of the world (FEOWs) located between latitudes 0° and 36° and calculated beta diversity (βjac) and its turnover (βjtu) and nestedness (βjne) components. We used a partial Mantel test and multiple regressions on distance matrices to evaluate the importance of past and current factors, and of geographical distance in determining beta diversity. Past variables were those representing the historical freshwater habitat during the last glacial maximum (LGM), and contemporary variables were those related to current habitat.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> We found high values of βjac within the FEOWs, with βjtu prevailing over βjne. Both past (paleodrainage) and current (drainage area, salinity, and lagoon area) factors affected species dissimilarity (βjac = 46%) and its components (βjtu = 44% and βjne =20%), although explanation was, in part, shared with geographical distance. Individually, the influence of past factors was prevalent in beta diversity and its components.</p> <p><strong>Main Conclusions:</strong> The results suggest that major changes in the availability of freshwater habitats and connectivity since the Pleistocene must have affected the colonization, extinction and recolonization processes of fishes along the eastern coast of South America. We suggest that the high beta diversity values may result from limited dispersal after extinctions in the LGM and that the dissimilar freshwater fish communities currently seen were formed mainly by heterogeneous subsets of the regional species pool that persisted in landscape refuges during past sea level increases and then recolonized coastal lagoons.</p>
Larval and adult traits coevolve in response to asymmetric coastal currents to shape marine dispersal kernels
<p>Dispersal emerges as an outcome of organismal traits and external forcings. However, it remains unclear how the emergent dispersal kernel evolves as a by-product of selection on the underlying traits. This question is particularly compelling in coastal marine systems where dispersal is tied to development and reproduction, and where directional currents bias larval dispersal downstream causing selection for retention. We modelled the dynamics of a metapopulation along a finite coastline using an integral projection model and adaptive dynamics to understand how asymmetric coastal currents influence the evolution of larval (pelagic larval duration) and adult (spawning frequency) life history traits, which indirectly shape the evolution of marine dispersal kernels. Selection induced by alongshore currents favors the release of larvae over multiple time periods, allowing long pelagic larval durations and long-distance dispersal to be maintained in marine life cycles in situations where they were previously predicted to be selected against. Two evolutionary stable strategies emerged: one with a long pelagic larval duration and many spawning events resulting in a dispersal kernel with a larger mean and variance, and another with a short pelagic larval duration and few spawning events resulting in a dispersal kernel with a smaller mean and variance. Our theory shows how coastal ocean flows are important agents of selection that can generate multiple, often co-occurring, evolutionary outcomes for marine life history traits that affect dispersal.</p>

The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from California Current Ecosystem (CCE) contains nitrogen from nitrate in coastal water measurements in microMolesPerLiter units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.

Data from: Population connectivity and phylogeography of a coastal fish, Atractoscion aequidens (Sciaenidae), across the Benguela Current region: evidence of an ancient vicariant event.
Contemporary patterns of genetic diversity and population connectivity within species can be influenced by both historical and contemporary barriers to gene flow. In the marine environment, present day oceanographic features such as currents, fronts and upwelling systems can influence dispersal of eggs/larvae and/juveniles/adults, shaping population substructuring. The Benguela Current system in the southeastern Atlantic is one of the oldest upwelling systems in the world, and provides a unique opportunity to investigate the relative influence of contemporary and historical mechanisms shaping the evolutionary history of warm-temperate fish species. Using the genetic variation in the mitochondrial DNA Control Region and eight nuclear microsatellite DNA loci, we identified the presence of two highly divergent populations in a vagile and warm-temperate fish species, Atractoscion aequidens, across the Benguela region. The geographical distributions of the two populations, on either side of the perennial upwelling cell, suggest a strong correlation between the oceanographic features of the system and the breakdown of gene flow within this species. Genetic divergence (mtDNA φST = 0.902, microsatellite FST = 0.055: probability of genetic homogeneity for either marker = p<0.001), absence of migrants (less than 1% per generation) between populations and coalescent estimates of time since most recent common ancestor suggest that the establishment of the main oceanographic features of the system (2 million years ago), particularly the strengthening and position of the perennial upwelling cell, is the most likely mechanism behind the observed isolation. Concordance between mitochondrial and nuclear genetic markers indicates that isolation and divergence of the northern and southern Benguela populations of A. aequidens occurred deep in the past and has continued to the present day. These findings suggest that the Benguela Current system may constitute an ancient and impermeable barrier to gene flow for warm-temperate fish species.

<p>The present dataset was derived from two acoustic Doppler current profilers moored in the inner (M1: 35.1881°N, 128.5861°E) and outer (M2: 35.1657°N, 128.5947°E) ) parts of the main channel of Masan Bay to reveal how suspended sediments vary depending on coastal seiches.</p> <p>Up-looking broadband ADCPs (M1: 1200 kHz RDI Workhorse Sentinel; M2: 1000 kHz RDI Sentinel V20) installed in a trawl-resistant bottom mount were configured to measure the profiles of the three-dimensional current velocities, water level, temperature, and echo intensity every ten minutes from September 22 to October 13, 2017.</p> <p>The post-processing dataset includes current velocity (m s<sup>-1</sup>), suspended sediment concentration (SSC, mg l<sup>-1</sup>), sediment flux (kg m<sup>-1</sup> s<sup>-1</sup>), 1-hr filtered current velocity and SSC, and excursion lengths (m). </p>
