Data and Supplementary Information : timber ressource dynamics in West African cocoa agroforestry systems
<p>Here we present three datasets (growthDB.csv, heightDB.csv and volumeDB.csv) describing 59 tree species used for wood production in cocoa Agroforestry System (AFS) in Côte d'Ivoire (West Afica). Our dataset includes a total of 4,634 trees: 2530 spontaneous and 2104 (trans)planted. </p> <p>We provide three table (per datasets in .csv format) with the following column per tree:</p> <p>- gensp: species latin names</p> <p>- dbh : tree diameter at breast height (cm)</p> <p>- age: tree age (years)</p> <p>- origin: tree origin (spontaneous or (trans)planted)</p> <p>- WDmean : tree wood density (g.cm³)</p> <p>- clus: study sites</p> <p>- indsp : species index</p> <p>- indclus : sites index</p> <p>- hlog: tree bole height (m)</p> <p>- vol : tree bole volume (m³)</p> <p>We also provide, the STAN code (models.stan) to assess the wood production potential of trees in cocoa AFS: (i) a model describing the diameter growth trajectories of trees as a function of their age, (ii) a model evaluating the relationship between tree diameter and bole height, and (iii) a model assessing the commercial volume of trees as a function of their diameter and bole height.</p> <p>Finally, we present additional tables and figures in Supplementary Information.pdf.</p>
Production and trade data on cocoa value chain in Ghana
<p>This dataset covers upstream, midstream and downstream behavioural patterns that were used to identify precursors of vulnerabilities in Ghana’s cocoa value chain. Data were obtained via focus group discussions and individual interviews with cocoa farmers in Ghana and extracted from annual reports of the global cocoa industry published by the International Cocoa Organisation. Behavioural patterns were established from transcripts and reports using NVivo as the computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software.</p>

Simulated and Reconstructed Jets with the COCOA Detector
<p>We present a single-jet dataset for fast simulation studies. The light-quark jets were generated using Pythia8.3 with energies between 20 and 200 GeV. The detector simulation was performed with the GEANT4-based <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2303.02101" target="_blank" rel="noopener">COCOA</a> tool kit. Particle flow objects were obtained through <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2212.01328" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HGPflow</a>. The truth and pflow particles are saved above a 1 GeV threshold. </p> <p>We provide two files with 5.5 M and 377 k unique single-jet events. Additionally, we have a file for resolution studies where each jet is sent through the detector simulation and reconstruction 100 times. This contains 3.6 k * 100 jets. The replicas are arranged sequentially; every 100 events have the same truth particles.</p>

Use of pheromone traps as a monitoring tool for the citrus mealybug (Planococcus citri) on cocoa farms
<p>This study developed and optimised a method for the monitoring of populations of <em>P. citri</em> using pheromone-baited traps on cocoa farms and established seasonal activity of <em>P. citri</em> in Cross River State, Nigeria. The effect of time of day, pheromone trap design (Delta and sticky trap), colour (red, blue, yellow, and white) and height placement (0.3. 0.9 and 1.8m) on the capture of adult male <em>P. citri</em> and non-target insects was studied. <em>Planococcus citri</em> was observed to be present year-round with a peak in April, which coincided with the highest air temperatures. By checking traps for diel activity, it was revealed that male flight activity was highest between 1800-0600. Trap design and colour had no significant effect on the number of male <em>P. citri</em> captured, although a smaller number of non-target insects were recorded in Delta traps. Trap height placement had a significant effect on the number of <em>P. citri,</em> and non-target species caught, with the highest number of captures obtained at the lowest trap height (0.3m) and capture rate decreasing as trap height increased. There was a significant positive correlation between the number of trapped male <em>P. citri</em> and air temperature. The results suggest that <em>P. citri</em> is present all year round in the field, that Delta traps are a more suitable trap type, and that 0.3m is an effective height for the monitoring of <em>P. citri</em> on cocoa farms. These findings could be used to improve mealybug monitoring on cocoa farms and could be utilised for the development of an integrated pest management programme.</p>

Data from: Disentangling the factors that shape bromeliad and ant communities in the canopies of cocoa agroforestry and preserved Atlantic Forest
<p>In tropical forest canopies, host tree characteristics shape epiphyte communities, and both host tree characteristics and epiphytes determine invertebrate communities, e.g., ants. Tree height is among the factors most often mentioned as a strong predictor for both bromeliad and ant communities. However, many factors interact dynamically in shaping the tree-bromeliad-ant association. Here, we investigated the effects of the host tree and canopy structural characteristics on both bromeliads and ants. We sampled bromeliads on 180 trees and ants in 360 bromeliads living on a subset of 60 of those trees in a continuum of native forest fragments and agroforestry systems in the Atlantic Forest, a Brazilian biodiversity hotspot. We found that the host trees' crown area had a positive effect on the abundance of bromeliads. Also, the introduced tree species had higher abundance of bromeliads than native tree species. Moreover, we found that the ant species composition was different between native and introduced trees. In addition, we observed a positive effect of the size of bromeliads and tree crown height on ant species richness on both bromeliad and tree scales, but there was no effect of tree height. Taken together, our findings highlight the importance of trees with large crowns for the maintenance of bromeliads, which are also associated with richer ant communities in both Atlantic Forest and agroforestry systems. These results emphasize the importance of trees with larger crowns for biodiversity conservation in both native forest fragments and agroforestry systems.</p>

Data from "Unraveling Cross-Border Climate Risks through Climate Storylines:An example from Europe's Cocoa Industry"
<p>The following files were used in the analysis in the article "Unraveling Cross-Border Climate Risks through Climate Storylines: An example from Europe's Cocoa Industry." The traditional assessment of climate change's impact on agriculture, confined by geographical borders, is insufficient due to global trade, allowing climate risks to affect multiple nations. This study uses cacao as an example to highlight cross-border climate risks, showing their implications for the EU's chocolate industry. Concentrating on cacao supply from Ivory Coast and Ghana, the study models various warming scenarios, revealing reduced cacao yields in both countries. Under RCP2.6, Ivory Coast could lose around 7% of cacao production by 2050, rising to 23% at RCP8.5. Ghana might experience losses of 39% by 2050, with a potential extreme loss of 86%. A no-deforestation import policy further affects production, reducing about 24% in the Ivory Coast and 16% in Ghana. These losses possibly cause EU supplies to decrease by 8% by 2050 in the long term and up to 20% in an extreme year. Predicted cacao price hikes of 30% by 2050 will cost the EU 2.5 billion euros annually by 2050. Extreme drought might elevate prices by 115% (RCP8.5), resulting in an additional annual expense of 10 billion euros for the EU. Findings indicate importance of addressing cross-border dimension in climate risk studies. These risks intensify with higher warming degrees, compounded by concentrated crop production, making countries dependent on these commodities highly susceptible to simultaneous, multi-location crop failures. Presently, EU trade agreements lack provisions for such scenarios. Given the increased likelihood of such shocks under a warming climate, more significant investment into disaster management strategies and policies is advisable.</p>
