Net Enclosures Disrupt Codling Moth Dispersal Not Establishment - Data Set
<p>To maintain control of codling moth (<em>Cydia pomonella</em> (L.)), apple growers have pursued the use of exclusion netting. The structures implemented range from row covers which are supported by the tree canopy and tied off to the trunk, to full block enclosures which are supported by trellis systems and allow access for workers and equipment. It is uncertain if these nets provide a physical or behavioral barrier to codling moth and if they can prevent establishment in new blocks. To determine the effects of netting we conducted field trials with wild and sterile moths using small (3 trees) and large (48 trees) cages to evaluate the permeability of the netting and the establishment of wild moths.These are the data from those experiments which are used for the publication in Agricultural and Forest Entomology entitled, "Net enclosures disrupt codling moth dispersal not establishment".</p>

Montana surveys of codling moth damage to apple fruit 2019-2020
<p>Codling moth (<em>Cydia pomonella</em>) is the major insect pest of pome fruit (apples and pears) in Montana. This dataset reports codling moth damage to apple fruit ("strikes") in Montana orchards where site managers were not applying pesticides to control codling moth. Data was collected in August or September of 2019 and 2020. Certain sites east of the continental divide have nominally lower incidence of codling moth damage to fruit than sites west of the divide. Due differences in weather year-to-year, we recommend continued monitoring. </p>
Montana codling moth trap-based biofix compared to two fixed biofix models, 2018-2020
<p>Codling moth (<em>Cydia pomonella</em>) is the primary insect pest of apple and pear trees in Montana and can destroy an entire crop if uncontrolled. Understanding the moth's life cycle is important for determining management methods and timing of treatments. The purpose of this study was to compare trap-based biofix (first consistent moth capture in the spring) to two temperature based trap-free models for fixed biofix developed in other apple producing regions. Trap-free models determine a date for fixed biofix using temperature accumulation data (growing degree days) from nearby weather stations. Trap-free models compared in the present study were developed and are used in Washington state and Utah state; compared to Montana, Washington is similar latitude but lower elevation, and Utah is similar to higher elevation, but lower latitude. Results presented here suggest that the Washington state model for fixed biofix more closely aligns with Montana trap-based biofix in the 3 years of the study. Generally, trap-based biofix in Montana occured after the Washington state model fixed biofix growing degree date; we surmise that low evening temperatures and frequent high winds in some parts of the state and certain years could influence trap catch.</p>
