COgnitive intervention to Restore attention using nature Environment (CORE) study data

The COgnitive intervention to Restore attention using nature Environment (CORE) study is single-blinded, two-group randomized-controlled pilot trial among patients with heart failure. The aims to test the preliminary efficacy of the newly developed Nature-VR, a virtual reality-based cognitive intervention that is based on the restorative effects of nature. The Nature-VR intervention group viewed 3-dimensional nature pictures using a virtual reality headset for 10 minutes per day, 5 days per week for 4 weeks (a total of 200 minutes). The active comparison group, Urban-VR, viewed 3-dimensional urban pictures using a virtual reality headset to match the Nature-VR intervention in intervention dose and delivery mode, but not in content. In this study, 73 participants with heart failure completed the baseline and randomized to either Nature-VR or Urban-VR. The target outcomes were attention, self-care of heart failure, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). After baseline data collection, 4 follow-up data were collected at 4, 8, 26, and 52 weeks.

This desk review evaluates the current state of interventions for mental health and cognitive functioning among older adults in Switzerland focusing on the features of these interventions as well as on Swiss-specific contextual factors that contribute to vulnerability and stigma. This results of the desk review has been submitted for publication to 'LIVES Working Papers' and 'Swiss Psychology Open' . The two versions of the desk review differ slightly. The version for LIVES Working Papers, included the results of the Delphi survey and the resulting intervention scenarios. The version for Swiss Psychology Open, did not include the Delphi survey results and the resulting intervention scenarios, but included a more detailed discussion of the review results.

Dataset for "Cognitive behavioural therapy self-help intervention preferences among informal caregivers of adults with chronic kidney disease: an online cross-sectional survey"

Data and R code used for the analysis of data for the publication: Coumoundouros et al., Cognitive behavioural therapy self-help intervention preferences among informal caregivers of adults with chronic kidney disease: an online cross-sectional survey. BMC Nephrology

Summary of study

An online cross-sectional survey for informal caregivers (e.g. family and friends) of people living with chronic kidney disease in the United Kingdom. Study aimed to examine informal caregivers' cognitive behavioural therapy self-help intervention preferences, and describe the caregiving situation (e.g. types of care activities) and informal caregiver's mental health (depression, anxiety and stress symptoms).

Participants were eligible to participate if they were at least 18 years old, lived in the United Kingdom, and provided unpaid care to someone living with chronic kidney disease who was at least 18 years old.

The online survey included questions regarding (1) informal caregiver's characteristics; (2) care recipient's characteristics; (3) intervention preferences (e.g. content, delivery format); and (4) informal caregiver's mental health. Informal caregiver's mental health was assessed using the 21 item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), which is composed of three subscales measuring depression, anxiety, and stress, respectively.

Sixty-five individuals participated in the survey.

See the published article for full study details.

Description of uploaded files

1. ENTWINE_ESR14_Kidney Carer Survey Data_FULL_2022-08-30: Excel file with the complete, raw survey data. Note: the first half of participant's postal codes was collected, however this data was removed from the uploaded dataset to ensure participant anonymity.

2. Cognitive development among children in a low-income setting: cost-effectiveness analysis of a maternal nutrition education intervention in rural Uganda

Inadequate nutrition and insufficient stimulation in early childhood can lead to long-term deficits in cognitive and social development. Evidence for policy and decision-making regarding the cost of delivering nutrition education is lacking in low and middle-income countries (LMIC). In rural Uganda, we conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT) examining the effect of a maternal nutrition education intervention on developmental outcomes among children aged 6–8 months. This intervention led to significantly improved cognitive scores when the children reached the age of 20–24 months. When considering the potential for this intervention's future implementation, the desired effects should be weighed against the increased costs. This study therefore aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of this education intervention compared with current practice. Health outcome data were based on the RCT. Cost data were collected via interviews with researchers involved in processing the intervention. This study considered a healthcare provider perspective for an 18-month time horizon. The control group was considered as the current practice for the future large-scale implementation of this intervention. A cost-effectiveness analysis was performed, including calculations of incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs). In addition, uncertainty in the results was characterized using one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. The ICER for the education intervention compared with current practice was USD ($) 16.50 per cognitive composite score gained, with an incremental cost of $265.79 and an incremental cognitive composite score of 16.11. The sensitivity analyses indicated the robustness of these results. The ICER was sensitive to changes in cognitive composite score and the cost of personnel, but the education intervention can be considered cost-effective compared with the current practice. The outcome of this study, including the cost analysis, health outcome, cost-effectiveness, and sensitivity analysis, can be useful to inform policymakers and stakeholders about effective resource allocation processes in Uganda and possibly other LMIC.
