Global scientific research commons under the Nagoya Protocol: Towards a collaborative economy model for the sharing of basic research assets

<p>This paper aims to get a better understanding of the motivational and transaction cost features of<br /> building global scientific research commons, with a view to contributing to the debate on the design of<br /> appropriate policy measures under the recently adopted Nagoya Protocol. For this purpose, the paper<br /> analyses the results of a world-wide survey of managers and users of microbial culture collections, which<br /> focused on the role of social and internalized motivations, organizational networks and external<br /> incentives in promoting the public availability of upstream research assets. Overall, the study confirms<br /> the hypotheses of the social production model of information and shareable goods, but it also shows the<br /> need to complete this model. For the sharing of materials, the underlying collaborative economy in<br /> excess capacity plays a key role in addition to the social production, while for data, competitive pressures<br /> amongst scientists tend to play a bigger role.</p>

Research institutions clustering based on the intensity of academic collaboration

<p>The clustering of research institutions has been conducted using the Louvain modularity algorithm. The Louvain modularity is a state-of-the-art method of identifying communities (clusters) in large networks. Modularity is a value between -1 and 1 that measures the density of edges inside communities to edges outside communities. Optimizing this value results in the best possible grouping of the nodes of a given network.</p> <p>In our exercise, the Louvain methods were applied to identify clusters of institutions within ACM and SSRN networks. In the network, nodes are constituted of institutions, and edges are represented by the intensity of research collaboration measured by number of papers co-authored by authors affiliated with the institutions.</p> <p>As an example, including the paper: <em>Fast unfolding of communities in large networks</em>, written by V. D. Blondel (Universite Catholique de Louvain), J-L. Guillaume (Universite Pierre et Marie Curie), R. Lambiotte (Imperial College London) and Etienne Lefebvre (Universite Catholique de Louvain) would impact the number of edges in our analysis in the following way:</p> <p>&ldquo;Universite catholique de Louvain&rdquo; &hArr; &ldquo;Imperial College London&rdquo; =+1</p> <p>&ldquo;Universite catholique de Louvain&rdquo; &hArr; &ldquo;Universite Pierre et Marie Curie&rdquo; =+1</p> <p>&ldquo;Imperial College London&rdquo; &hArr; &ldquo;Universite Pierre et Marie Curie&rdquo; =+1</p> <p>In our largest network we analyse 5362 institution nodes with 147 482 edges. The number of identified clusters highly depends on the resolution parameter. Resolution is a parameter for the Louvain community detection algorithm that affects the size of the recovered clusters. Smaller resolutions recover smaller, and therefore a larger number of clusters, and conversely, larger values recover clusters containing more data points. In all clusterizations, we have used a default resolution (1.0) tuned in the popular Gephi software for network analysis. CS3MESH4EOSC Final Event Science Mesh - Unlocking Open Science and Collaborative Research Landscape

<p>The recap video of CS3MESH4EOSC final event. The CS3MESH4EOSC final event, took place on 22 June 2023, at the EGI Conference in Poznan (Poland), showcased how the Science Mesh is contributing to an easier and more robust open science across Europe, thanks to novel approaches for data sharing and synchronisation.</p> <p><strong>The first half of the event</strong> will count with live demonstrations, where each data service from the Science Mesh will be presented from a user-perspective point of view. Event attendees will get practical information on how they can join the Science Mesh as a researcher, a software developer or a service provider. The event will also bring together representatives of Science Mesh use cases, who will explain how Science Mesh is making a difference in their lives, thanks to easier data sharing and synchronisation. A panel discussion with representatives of different sectors, from research to industry and education, will discuss the most urgent trends &amp; priorities for cross-border science collaboration between different sciences.</p> <p><strong>The second half of the event</strong> will be focused on the technical novelties within the Science technical foundation. A series of demonstrations will be presented, followed by a panel discussion, with representatives of CS3MESH4EOSC members that are part of the EOSC Task Forces, on how the Science Mesh contributes to EOSC&rsquo;s success and the overall EOSC Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA).</p>

Coastal SEES Collaborative Research: Coastal Sustainability: A cross-site comparison of salt marsh persistence in response to sea-level rise and feedbacks from social adaptations

Coastal ecosystems are often valued for decision-making purposes based on monetized market and non-market values of goods and services, and associated economic impacts. Examples include values of fishery landings, price changes for waterfront homes, and tourism revenues. Monetized quantities such as these do not provide a comprehensive characterization of the values provided by these ecosystems. Human reliance on the goods and services provided by ecosystems and the global decline in the health of many of these ecosystems suggests the need for ecosystem valuation to help inform decision-making and conservation policy. However, traditionally employed economic valuation methods are rarely able to capture the full scope of the benefits ecosystems provide, including benefits provided by "cultural" ecosystem services. Qualitative methods such as focus groups can provide insight on these values not available through quantitative methods alone. This research explores public perceptions of salt marsh value through the use of semi-structured focus groups in marsh-adjacent communities in Massachusetts, Virginia, and Georgia. The data include de-identified focus group transcripts from three 90-minute focus groups held in each state. Initial questions were drawn from the same semi-structured question list in each focus group, with exploratory follow-up questions based on participant responses. Results of text analysis suggest that in case study communities, outdoor experiences in salt marshes inspire serenity in Massachusetts, influence shore identities in Virginia, and promote stewardship cultivation in Georgia. Perceived threats to these benefits, such as the threat of residential development, industrial pollution, and increasing flood risk, together constitute the context for various community responses related to marsh protection. Historic machines from 'prams' to 'Parliament': new avenues for collaborative linguistic research

Creation and alteration in DH (Hybrid), 1-3 June 2022.</p> <p>Research in computational linguistics has made successful attempts at modelling word meaning at scale, but much remains to be done to put these computational models to the test of historical scholarship. More importantly, a lot of computational research looks at texts in a historical vacuum, &#39;synchronically&#39;, as linguists would say.&nbsp;<em>Living with Machines</em>&nbsp;is an interdisciplinary research project that rethinks the impact of technology on the lives of ordinary people during the Industrial Revolution. During this project, we decided to address a fundamental question: what did people mean by &lsquo;machine&rsquo; and how has this meaning changed over time?</p> <p>This paper outlines how a simple research question like &#39;what was a machine?&#39; can provide an opportunity to engage the public with our work while also generating data for analysis and new avenues of research in a radically collaborative way.</p>

Challenges and Realities in Asian Elephant Research: A Global Bibliometric Analysis Highlighting Conservation Crises and Collaborative Opportunities

<p><span>The Asian elephant (<em>Elephas maximus</em>), also known as Asiatic elephant is facing a significant decline in its wild populations due to habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation, leading to increased conflicts between humans and elephants. Preserving this iconic species is crucial, prompting researchers to explore various aspects of its biology, behavior, ecology, and conservation efforts. </span><span>In light of the profound importance of this subject</span><span>, this study utilizes a descriptive systematic literature review (SLR) to examine global research trends on Asian elephants. Analyzing a dataset of 1,780 articles spanning from 1914 to 2022, the study reveals a notable increase in publications, particularly since 2000, with 142 articles published in 2022 alone. This research provides a comprehensive overview of advancements in Asian elephant studies, promoting international collaboration and knowledge exchange among researchers. While research from leading scientific countries can aid in conservation efforts, there is a call for more inclusive, participatory and fair approaches. The study demonstrates a commitment to Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity (EID) by adopting a multifaceted approach that considers the needs, perspectives and contributions of diverse stakeholders. By addressing disparities and advocating for social justice within elephant conservation, the study emphasizes the urgent need for collective action in conservation, welfare improvement, conflict resolution, ecosystem balance, and overall enhancement of understanding about Asian elephants. Serving as a valuable resource for policymakers, conservation organizations, and researchers, the study not only synthesizes existing literature but also identifies research gaps, highlights areas requiring immediate attention, and offers collaborative opportunities for global scientists to contribute to the well-being and preservation of this majestic species.</span></p>

Coastal SEES Collaborative Research: Non-Market Value Meta-Data on Willingness to Pay for Coastal Marsh Habitat Change

These data represent a meta-dataset of observations on per household economic value - represented by per household willingness-to-pay (WTP) - for improvements in coastal marsh habitat, drawn from stated-preference studies in the research literature. The metadata allow estimation of benefit transfer functions via meta-regression modeling. Within these econometric functions, the dependent variable is a comparable estimate of economic value (e.g., WTP) drawn from extant primary valuation studies. Independent variables represent observable factors hypothesized to explain variation in this value measure across observations. These functions can be used to produce out-of-sample predictions of WTP for coastal marsh habitat improvements at sites for which no primary valuation studies have been conducted. They can also be used to understand the factors associated with systematic variations in marsh habitat values across different sites and studies. These data are described in Vedogbeton, H. and R.J. Johnston. 2020. Commodity Consistent Meta-Analysis of Wetland Values: An Illustration for Coastal Marsh Habitat. Environmental and Resource Economics 75(4), 835-865, and allow replication of the results presented therein. The metadata are extracted from primary studies that estimate total (use and nonuse) per household WTP for changes in the quantity or quality of coastal marsh wildlife habitats or their services, in US and Canada. These studies were identified via a systematic review of the literature. The metadata combine information provided by these primary non-market valuation studies with publicly available external data extracted from sources such as the US Census, US National Historical GIS (https://www.nhgis.org/), and US Fish and Wildlife Service National Wetlands Inventory (https://www.fws.gov/wetlands/Data/Mapper.html). Die Reflexionen wurden durch vorgegebene Fragen angeleitet. Die hier vorliegenden Texte sind, von den Studierenden selbst niedergeschriebene, Transkripte von Sprechtexten eines Self-Video-Casts. Es handelt sich dabei um eine benotete Pr&uuml;fungsleistung einer universit&auml;ts&uuml;bergreifenden Wahlpflicht-Lehrveranstaltung mit 1-3 Credit-Points.</p> <p>A dataset containing written reflections of 57 university students from several German universities and fields of study on their participation in collaborative research-based learning focused on sustainability topics and using videos as a research tool. <p>Data provided here consists of the summaries of&nbsp;Covid 19 pandemic experiences of doctoral researchers at Brighton and Sussex Medical School under the Social Sciences for Severely Stigmatising Skin diseases (5S Foundation) in Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Sudan.&nbsp;&nbsp;Conducting doctoral research is a challenging endeavour, a challenge which as the growing literature on the subject has shown, the COVD-19 pandemic has made even more so. For some doctoral researchers, however, the pandemic has also been accompanied by political unrest and military conflict, putting them and their networks at risk and making their research especially difficult to sustain. We have written about how we navigated doing doctoral studies during&nbsp;the period of the pandemic and socio-political unrest.&nbsp;</p>
