Harmful algal bloom and aquatic weeds data from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, collected to evaluate the impact of the 2021 Temporary Urgency Change Order and Emergency Drought Barrier
Condition 8 of the June 2021 Temporary Urgency Change Order for the Central Valley Project (CVP) and State Water Project (SWP) requires a special study of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta (Delta) and the spread of submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV), and floating aquatic vegetation (FAV), also referred to as “aquatic weeds”. A report on the study was submitted to the State Water Resources Control Board on June 1, 2022. This data package contains all publicly available data used in the report, including visual cyanobacteria reports, cyanotoxin data, water quality, nutrients, flow/hydrodynamics, chlorophyll-a concentrations, temperature, coverage of SAV and FAV, use of herbicides, and human populations. Many of these data were derived from other datasets, though some were collected specifically for this study

<p>The Political Documents Archive http://www.polidoc.net/ contains election manifestos, coalition agreements, government declarations and various other documents of political actors from developed democracies. Currently, the archive builds on a stock of more than 3000 political documents from 20 European countries. The aim of the repository is to provide political texts in order to facilitate scholarly research in different areas of comparative politics such as party competition, coalition politics, legislative decision-making or electoral behavior.</p> <p>National electoral manifestos have been collected in the course of the REPCONG project ("Representation in Europe: Policy Congruence between Citizens and Elites"), and the archive includes party manifestos for regional elections in several European democracies. Because the process of European integration resulted in a strengthening of regions in EU member states and in countries that want to join the European Union, the relevance of the regional level for political decision-making has increased during the last decades. Therefore, also the policy profiles of regional parties are required to get a full picture of democratic responsiveness in European states across all levels of the political system. The collection of regional manifestos was supported by the COHESIFY project (www.cohesify.eu), funded under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The aim of COHESIFY is to study whether the European Structural and Investment Funds affect people’s support for and identification with the European project.</p> <p>The archive is freely accessible (after a simple registration) and meant to foster rigorous research in these areas by enabling scholars to produce valid and reliable findings from empirical studies of textual data rather than unnecessarily struggling to obtain and process texts.</p>
Data collected for: The contrasted impacts of grasshoppers on soil microbial activities in function of ecosystem productivity and herbivore diet
<p>Herbivory can have contrasted impacts on soil microbes and nutrient cycling, which has stimulated the development of conceptual frameworks exploring the links between below- and aboveground processes. The "productivity model" predicts that herbivores stimulate microbial activities and accelerate nutrient mineralization in productive ecosystems, while they have an opposite effect in less productive ecosystems. In parallel, the "diet model" predicts that herbivores feeding on conservative plants accelerate nutrient cycling while those feeding on exploitative plants decelerate nutrient cycling, due to changes in litter inputs. Since these two frameworks can lead to conflicting predictions in some cases, experimental evidence combining herbivore diet and productivity is required.</p> <p>During two consecutive years, we conducted an experiment controlling the presence of three grasshopper species consuming either grasses, forbs or both in twelve natural and managed alpine grasslands of contrasted productivities. In order to assess the effects of herbivory on soil microbes, we measured their enzymatic activities, their biomass and the soil potential nitrogen mineralization (PNM). Soil and vegetation characteristics were also determined in order to test if they modulated the effects of herbivory on microbes.</p> <p>Contrary to the predictions of the diet model, the effects of herbivory on microbial characteristics did not depend on the herbivores diet but relied on ecosystem productivity. The most productive sites were characterized by exploitative plant species which depleted N resources in the soil, and by microbes producing relatively few extracellular enzymes, leading to a lower PNM. Herbivory increased microbial biomass and decreased the production of extracellular enzymes in those sites, possibly through the stimulation of root exudates produced by exploitative species. The least productive sites were characterized by conservative plants, which led to the sequestration of soil C, and by microbes having a resource acquisition strategy (more extracellular enzymes, higher PNM). Herbivory decreased microbial biomass and increased the production of extracellular enzymes in those sites. This pattern can be explained by the loss of carbon associated with insect respiration, which increases the need for microbes to acquire resources and by a lower production of root exudates by conservative species. Therefore, the effects of two years of herbivory on soil microbes were at odds with the productivity model, which focuses instead on longer term effects corresponding to herbivory-induced changes in plant species composition. This highlights the multidimensional feature of the impacts of herbivory on ecosystem functioning, both in space and time.</p>
Multidimensional impact assessment of a large collection of books using PlumX: methodology, technical limitations and indicators analysis [Complementary material to manuscript]
<p>The main purpose of this macro-study is to shed light on the broad impact of books. For this purpose, the impact a very large collection of books (more than 200,000) has been analysed by using PlumX, an analytical tool providing a great number of different metrics provided by various tools. Furthermore, the study focuses on the evolution of the most significant measures and indicators over time. The results show usage counts in comparison to the other metrics are quantitatively predominant. Catalogue holdings and reviews represent a book’s most characteristic measures deriving from its increased level of impact in relation to prior results. Our results also corroborate the long half-life of books within the scope of all metrics, excluding views and social media. Despite of some disadvantages, PlumX has proved to be a very helpful and promising tool for assessing the broad impact of books, especially because of how easy it is to enter the ISBN directly as well as its algorithm to aggregate all the data generated by the different ISBN variations.</p>

Impact of household bulky waste collection on the presence of dengue-transmitting mosquito breeding sites_dataset
<p>The objective was to evaluate the impact of a municipal strategy to reduce Ae. aegypti in Asunción focused on the management of household bulky waste. To estimate the result, the Difference in Difference (DID) method was used. For the baseline, a simple random sampling of 324 households was carried out. The intervention implemented by the local government in an area with 180,000 residents, contributed to the collection of the equivalent of 14 kilos of bulky waste per inhabitant, given an idea of the magnitude of the problem. For the evaluation survey, 2.5 to 4 years after the intervention, 120 households were randomly selected, of which 60% had not been intervened (control households) and 40% had been intervened. As a result, a significant reduction was achieved in the total number of large solid waste found in the homes that were the object of the intervention. The differentiated collection was used mainly by those households that had a large number of large solid waste (DID of -55%), but not to get rid of all of these objects, but only a part. The data present no evidence of change in the percentage of households with breeding containers between the intervention and control groups.</p>

Geobotanical and Impact Map Collection for Prudhoe Bay Oilfield, Alaska, 1972-2010
This data set provides a collection of maps of geoecological characteristics of areas within the Beechey Point quadrangle near Prudhoe Bay on the North slope of Alaska: a geobotanical atlas of the Prudhoe Bay region, a land cover map of the Beechey Point quadrangle, and cumulative impact maps in the Prudhoe Bay Oilfield for ten dates from 1968 to 2010. The geobotanical atlas is based on aerial photographs and covers 145 square kilometers of the Prudhoe Bay Oilfield. The land cover map of the Beechey Point quadrangle was derived from the Landsat multispectral scanner, aerial photography, and other field and cartographic methods. The cumulative impact maps of the Prudhoe Bay Oilfield show historical infrastructure and natural changes digitized from aerial photos taken in each successive analysis year (1968, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1977, 1979, 1983, 1990, 2001, and 2010). Nine geoecological attributes are included: dominant vegetation, secondary vegetation, tertiary vegetation, percentage open water, landform, dominant surface form, secondary surface form, dominant soil, and secondary soil. These data document environmental changes in an Arctic region that is affected by both climate change and rapid industrial development.
