The glossy chips contain samples from Munsell hues 5R, 7.5R, 5G and 7.5G with values changing from 5-6 and with chromas from 6-8. The spectrofotometer was calibrated by using a white plastic chip provided by the spectrofotometer manufacturer.</p> <p>Measuring equipment: Minolta CM-2002 spectrofotometer.<br> Wavelength interval: 400 nm - 700 nm.<br> Wavelength resolution: 10 nm.</p>

Each spectrum consists of 61 elements that are raw data got from the output of the 12 bit A/D-converter of the AOTF color measuring equipment. All the element values should be between 0 and 4096. However there can exist some values which are larger than 4096. Those element values should be corrected to the value 4096. Furthermore there exists some noise at the blue end of spectra. This was caused by the low intensity of the illuminator at wavelengths below 420 nm. The illuminator was a standard halogen lamp and 0/0 geometry was used when the samples were measured.</p> <p>Measuring equipment: Acousto Optic Tunable Filter (AOTF).<br> Wavelength interval: 400 nm - 700 nm.<br> Wavelength resolution: 5 nm.</p>

Microplastic measurements including, mass, color, particle type and plastic type collected aboard the Scripps Environmental Accumulation of Plastic Expedition (SEAPLEX) cruise, August 2009.
Microplastic was collected using a standard manta net tow. Each sample was sorted at 6-12x magnification under a Wild M-5 dissecting microscope, and plastic particles and H. sericeus removed for further analysis. Plastic particles were soaked in deionized water to remove salts, dried at 60°C, and stored in a desiccator. Particles were then digitally imaged with a Zooscan digital scanner (Gilfillan et al. 2009, Gorsky et al. 2010)
