Tree Health Conditions (mortality, damage, disease, bark beetles) in Fuel Reduction Treatments Located Near Communities in Interior Alaska and the Cook Inlet Region of Alaska - Observations from July-August 2023
This dataset contains tree-, transect-, and site-level observations of forest stands at sites that received a fuel reduction treatment. Tree-level observations include species, diameter, living status, damage, disease, and bark beetle presence. Transect-level observations include level of coarse woody debris and bark beetle presence. Sites are categorized by region (recent/ongoing spruce beetle oubreak or endemic spruce beetle population levels) and treatment type (hand-thinned or mechanincally felled and masticated). These observations are from July-August 2023. Sites are located near communities in Interior Alaska and the Cook Inlet Region.
Offering ART refill through community health workers versus clinic-based follow-up after home-based same-day ART initiation in rural Lesotho: The VIBRA cluster-randomised clinical trial

These are pseudo-anonymised data from the VIBRA randomized trial: "Offering ART refill through community health workers versus clinic-based follow-up after home-based same-day ART initiation in rural Lesotho: The VIBRA cluster-randomised clinical trial". The data dictionary explains the data available in the dataset. Between August 2018 and May 2019, 257 eligible individuals from 117 consenting villages were enrolled from two districts of Lesotho, and followed up for a maximum of 15 months. The protocol was published, doi: 10.1186/s13063-019-3510-5

COMPREHENSIVE LIVESTOCK HEALTH PROGRAM: TARGETED TREATMENT AND HOLISTIC INTERVENTIONS FOR MAJOR PREVALENT DISEASES IN THE LIVESTOCK FARMING COMMUNITY OF DAYNILE DISTRICT, MOGADISHU, SOMALIA.

The general objective of this project was to intervene with the most common livestock diseases in Dayniile district by carrying out a comprehensive campaign for treatment and control. The specific objectives consisted of a treatment campaign, improving infrastructure for establishing disinfectant foot dips and hand washing points, providing disinfectant tools, and finalising community engagement and education by doing training at the farm level.
The team visited different donors and added their contribution. After collecting sufficient funds from various sources, the team began the procurement of the necessary materials. This included purchasing veterinary drugs and supplies from local pharmacies and other essentials like stationery. The first activity was treatment campaigns, which were a central aspect of the project. Over 290 animals were treated for various diseases and conditions. The farm manager was informed of the diagnoses, and upon receiving their permission, the appropriate treatments were administered. The second intervention action was a vaccination campaign. The team vaccinated a total of 70 animals against clostridial bacteria, which is one of the most common camel diseases encountered in the area. The third intervention was the establishment of biosecurity facilities at select livestock farms. Among all the farms involved in the project, five were chosen for the provision of enhanced biosecurity measures. These measures included the installation of foot dips and teat dips. The fourth activity was educating livestock farmers on strategies for controlling and preventing livestock diseases. The training was held at Beder Camel Dairy Farm and attended by approximately 10 individuals, comprising 3 females and 7 males. The content of the training was three modules: the first was general farm biosecurity, the second was operational biosecurity, and the third was concern for vaccination. Recommendation: We recommend that each farm hire livestock health specialists to easily implement disease prevention steps and promptly solve each new case.
We recommend the livestock association, veterinary clinics, and other institutions working on livestock do routine campaigns that facilitate the determination of prevalent diseases and the treatment of those cases

Influence of conspiracy theories and distrust of community health volunteers on adherence to COVID-19 guidelines and vaccine uptake in Kenya

This cross-sectional study collected data between 25 May –27 June 2021 n=447. It involved all registered community health volunteers (CHVs) who had participated in the COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy study. This data was collected as part of an Epidemic Ethics/WHO initiative that FCDO/Wellcome Grant 214711/Z/18/Z has supported. WHO’s specific grant number was 2020/1077878-0). The funders had no role in study design, data collection and analysis, decision to publish, or manuscript preparation. No authors received a salary from the funders.

Use of health care services in community-dwelling older adults in two regions of Spain

This dataset contains data on use of health care resources of community-dwelling older adults aged 70 or over, who were functionally independent. Data of health resources use included contacts along two consecutive years with: the general practitioner, primary care nurse, the specialists, visits to emergency rooms, and hospital admissions and length of stay. The data included also information about sex, region, polipharmacy, age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index and funcionality, measured by Timed Up and Go test. The data collection was performed in two Spanish regions. Baseline assessment was done between 2015 and 2016, and patients were followed for 2 years. There were in total 1488 registries considering both years.

Data from: Impacts of weathered microplastic ingestion on gastrointestinal microbial communities and health endpoints in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas)

Microplastics are a ubiquitous presence in the world's aquatic environments and their threat to aquatic biota is poorly understood, especially in freshwater ecosystems. In the environment, microbial biofilms can form on the surface of microplastics, and these plastics have the potential to adsorb harmful toxins. Because lab-based studies on microplastics are often conducted with clean polymers, in ecologically unrealistic conditions and concentrations, the impact of these weathered microplastics on aquatic organisms in ecologically realistic conditions is still unclear. To help address the need for ecologically relevant microplastic exposure data, we incubated 500 μm polyethylene microplastic beads in Muskegon Lake, Michigan, USA and used them to conduct a 28-day ingestion study with male and female fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas). We examined the effects of microplastic ingestion on the fish gut microbial community along with hepatic gene expression and health parameters. We found that microplastic ingestion had statistically significant impacts on growth in male fathead minnows. Microplastic treatment did not significantly alter the beta diversity of the gut microbial community for either males or females, but there were clear differences between sexes and over time, indicating that these factors may outweigh the impacts of microplastic ingestion on beta diversity in the gut. The expression of immune response genes was not altered in males. It did, however, cause some changes to alpha diversity metrics in both sexes and there were several differentially abundant taxa among treatments. These data suggest that microplastic ingestion has health effects, but these effects may be sex specific across certain species and they are likely not being solely driven by changes in gut microbial communities.
