Primary Production and Species Richness in Lake Communities 1997 - 2000
An understanding of the relationship between species richness and productivity is crucial to understanding biodiversity in lakes. We investigated the relationship between the primary productivity of lake ecosystems and the number of species for lacustrine phytoplankton, rotifers, cladocerans, copepods, macrophytes, and fish. Our study includes two parts: (1) a survey of 33 well-studied lakes for which data on six major taxonomic groups were available; and (2) a comparison of the effects of short- and long-term whole-lake nutrient addition on primary productivity and planktonic species richness Dodson, Stanley I., Shelley E. Arnott, and Kathryn L. Cottingham. 2000. The relationship in lake communities between primary productivity and species richness. Ecology 81:2662-79. Number of sites: 33
SBC LTER: Reef: Seasonal Kelp Forest Community Dynamics: Taxon-specific seasonal net primary production (NPP) for macroalgae
This dataset provides estimates of seasonal net primary production (NPP) for all taxa of macroalgae sampled in fixed plots of the SBC LTER's seasonal kelp forest monitoring sites. The five reefs (Arroyo Quemada 34°28.048’N, 120°07.031’W; Carpinteria 34°23.474’N, 119°32.510’W; Isla Vista 34°23.275’N, 119°32.792’W; Mohawk 34°23.649’N, 119°43.762’W; and Naples 34° 25.342’N, 119° 57.102’W) ranged in depth from 5.8 m to 8.9 m (MLLW) and were chosen to represent a range of physical and biological characteristics known to influence subtidal macroalgal assemblages in the region. NPP of understory taxa was calculated using field measurements of irradiance and biomass (derived from abundance) and laboratory estimates of taxon-specific photosynthetic parameters. NPP for the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, was calculated using linear relationships between frond density in a given season and average NPP for that season.
Net community production (NCP) and gross oxygen production (GOP), based on oxygen-argon ratios and triple oxygen isotopes, from seasonal NES-LTER Transect cruises in 2018
This data package provides net community production (NCP) and gross oxygen production (GOP, a measure of gross primary production) for the winter, spring, summer, and fall Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises in 2018. Two tables are provided: a high-frequency table with NCP rates calculated from measurements of O2/Ar made continuously by an at-sea equilibrator inlet mass spectrometer (EIMS), and a low-frequency table with both NCP and GOP rates calculated for discrete samples measured post-cruise. The GOP rates were calculated from triple O2 isotopic (TOI) ratios. These data are derived from the EIMS and TOI data for the NES-LTER Transect cruises in EDI data package knb-lter-nes.6.3.

Net community production, nutrients, and hydrographic parameters in the South China Sea in summer 2017
<p>In summer, the Vietnam Offshore Current (VOC) and the Kuroshio intrusion are two important processes provoking considerable environmental fluctuations in the South China Sea (SCS). Net community production (NCP) is an important proxy of biological pump strength and can be estimated based on the dissolved oxygen to argon ratio (O2/Ar) in the mixed layer. To determine the influence of the VOC and Kuroshio intrusion on the NCP in the oligotrophic SCS, we conducted high-resolution underway measurements of O2/Ar and hydrographic parameters using membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS, HPR-40, Hiden, UK) and multi-parameter water quality logger (RBR Maestro, Canada) during the cruise in the northeastern SCS in summer 2017. NCP in the mixed layer was estimated using the supersaturation of O2/Ar (Delta O2/Ar) and gas transfer velocity (k). All the underway observation data were compiled into the 5-min interval. To monitor the nutritive fluctuations induced by the VOC and Kuroshio intrusion, we also collected surface water samples from Niskin bottles at sampling stations for the nutrients analysis; the nutrients were then determined by an auto-analyzer. We divided the cruise into three phases (Phase 1, 2, and 3); Phase 1 was dominated by the Kuroshio intrusion, while Phase 3 was influenced by the VOC. Because the upwelling driven by cyclonic eddies and typhoons could introduce considerable uncertainties to the NCP result, we excluded the data obtained in the upwelling regions.</p>

SBC LTER: Reef: Community structure and productivity of subtidal turf and foliose algal assemblages at Naples Reef, 2006
This dataset contains abundance, primary production and respiration of macroalgal and turf assemblages at Naples Reef (Santa Barbara County, CA) during 2006. It includes abundance of macroalgae is in terms of biomass (dry weight), and abundance of animals is in numbers of individuals and biomass (ash-free dry weight). Primary production and respiration of the benthos were measured in situ as changes in oxygen in closed chambers that covered 0.1m2 of the bottom. Species richness data are for macroalgae only. Abundance and diversity were measured for the same plots where oxygen measurements were recorded. These data were presented in: <ulink url="http://dx.doi.org/10.3354/meps08131">Miller, R.J., D. Reed, and M. Brzezinski. 2009. Community structure and productivity of subtidal turf and foliose algal assemblages. Marine Ecology Progress Series 388:1-11 doi: 10.3354/meps08131</ulink>.
Data set: Can ocean community production and respiration be determined by measuring high-frequency oxygen profiles from autonomous floats?
<p>Relevant autonomous float data for <a href="https://doi.org/10.5194/bg-17-4119-2020">Gordon et al. (2020)</a>. Following a similar structure to the Argo network's "synthetic" profile files, one file per float is produced with all relevant variables (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, backscatter, dissolved oxygen) on a common depth and time grid. The Electro-Magnetic Autonomous Profiling Explorer (EM-APEX) floats were deployed in the northern Gulf of Mexico in May 2017 - see <a href="https://doi.org/10.1109/CWTM43797.2019.8955168">Shay et al. (2019)</a> for more information. </p> <p>The data published here contains a timestamp for each data point. Another version of this data which contains some additional variables is hosted on <a href="https://data.gulfresearchinitiative.org/data/R5.x275.281:0001">GRIIDC</a>, but does not contain a timestamp for each data point, but rather for each profile. </p>
