Evaluating rose yield responses to compost treatments: Data from an 18-month field study in Kenya

<p>This dataset and these scripts supports the manuscript 'Modelling cut rose yield after compost amendment over an 18-month period using repeated sigmoidal Gompertz curve fitting' by Evy de Nijs, Roland Bol, Albert Tietema &amp; Emiel van Loon.&nbsp;</p> <p>Roses are an important crop for the floricultural sector of Kenya. Roses are a perennial crop and under continuous production for six to ten years. To optimize rose production, it is essential to understand how different management practices impact yield over time. This dataset contains a detailed record of rose yield data collected in an 18-month large-scale field experiment. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of pre-planting compost amendment on the yield and quality of cut roses. It was conducted in a polythene greenhouse near lake Naivasha, Kenya. Yield data included the number of stems harvested per day per flowering bed. Data presented here offer a comprehensive view of the impacts of different compost treatments on the yield of cut roses. Combined with the offered scripts, this is the framework presented in the aforementioned manuscript. Microbial and soil moisture impacts of compost amendments and rainfall pulses in a degraded dryland soil, Arizona, 2021-2023

Compost, an organic soil amendment, has been proposed to increase soil carbon storage and water-holding capacity in drylands, and this management strategy may be particularly impactful in degraded drylands with low soil organic content. Compost additions and rainfall variability may interact to affect soil moisture, which is an important catalyst for soil microbial activity. This dataset is from a study that investigated how variable compost application amounts and simulated rainfall pulses affect soil moisture, microbial activity, and carbon content in a laboratory incubation study. Soils were amended with different amounts of compost (0, 0.35, and 0.70 g cm -2) and water pulses (5, 10, and 15 mm) in a full-factorial design. Each treatment received the same cumulative amount of water throughout the incubation, but pulses occurred at different frequencies (every 5, 10, and 15 days). Soil moisture content and microbial respiration were measured daily. Soil carbon content was measured at the end of the experiment.

The cultivation produces large quantities of green waste, up to 50 kg per hectare per day. In this experiment we evaluated the impact of compost amendment on the yield and quality of cut roses cultivation in a large-scale commercial setting with over 7,500 rose plants. It was conducted between August 2022 and February 2024 near Lake Naivasha in Kenya. Additionally we evaluated the potential of compost to partially substitute mineral fertilizer. Yields were recorded daily and cut rose quality and physicochemical soil parameters were assessed every three to six months to &nbsp;comprehensively evaluate the impact of compost incorporation on cut rose production.</p>

Compost Amendments up to One Inch Restore Dry Rangeland Soil Health and Plant Productivity in New Mexico, 2020-2022

Dry rangelands are important systems for coproducing food and other ecosystem services, but degradation of productivity, diversity, and water holding capacity may require active intervention to restore. Use of compost amendments on grasslands has been shown to improve many outcomes related to carbon, water, and nutrients unless excessive amounts are used, but practitioners lack guidance of optimal and cost-effective use to meet their management goals. We compared compost additions from 0-2.54 cm at two ranches in New Mexico and measured plant composition and biomass, soil characteristics such as bulk density, infiltration rate, aggregate stability, and total carbon content under baseline conditions and one- and two years after addition.

HotBin composter temperature measurements

<p>This is a CSV data table with temperature measurements of a HotBin composter, as displayed by the thermometer on its top. Environment temperature, rain is also recorded. A home-made heater unit is installed near the lid of the HotBin, this is a simple kettle that boils the water when a button is pressed, then heats up the water to boiling temperature and does no more heating until the button is pressed again. The composter is fed mainly with kitchen waste, occasionally with garden waste.</p>

Mesofauna community influences litter chemical trajectories during early-stage litter decay in compost

Decomposition of organic material is a fundamental ecosystem process, the rate of which is moderated by both litter chemistry and decomposer communities. Because litter chemistry changes throughout decomposition, we would expect the decomposer food web to interact with these changes in their basal resource to alter the trajectories of chemical changes during decay. To investigate how decomposer mesofauna influence patterns of litter chemical change throughout early stages of decay, we tracked mass loss, macro- and micronutrient elements, and fiber chemistry dynamics in Arizona sycamore (Platanus wrightii) leaves decomposed under optimal decay conditions in a biotically diverse compost pile. By using litterbags of two different mesh sizes to manipulate the mesofauna gaining access to the litter, we record how the complexity of the soil mesofauna community changes the trajectory of litter chemistry.

Upgrade of bio-oil produced from the sisal residue composting

<p>The present work studies the composting effects on the chemical characteristics of bio-oil produced by pyrolysis of sisal residue. Three systems were composted with sisal residue proportions to sisal fiber powder of 100:0, 90:10, and 75:25, respectively. The systems showed reductions of 33–48% (extractive), 70–80% (hemicellulose), and 80–90% (cellulose) after composting. An increase in lignin content was observed in all systems. The pyrolysis of the composted systems was performed at 450 and 550 °C. At both temperatures, this process was selective in producing a large concentration of hydrocarbons (&gt;160% increase), mainly alkanes and alkenes, reducing the concentrations of ketones, aldehydes, and phenolics (&gt;50%) and eliminating esters, furans, and acetic acid to composted biomasses. The higher temperature favored aromatics and cyclic hydrocarbon production from the pyrolysis of composted samples. In addition to these results, composting helped reduce the oxygenated bio-oil species by approximately 44 - 75% at the lowest and ~ 69% at the highest temperatures. These results indicate that composted sisal residue can produce bio-oils that are more suitable for biorefineries since they are rich in aliphatic hydrocarbons and non-oxygenated species.</p>
