Influence of Playing on the Tonal Characteristics of a Concert Piano - Dataset
<p>Dataset supporting conference proceedings publication:</p> <p><strong>## Abstract</strong></p> <p>Well-maintained pianos are said to ”mature” and to ”change for the better” over the first years. When auditioning concert<br> pianos for purchase, technicians do often not choose the best sounding instrument but the one with the greatest potential<br> for future development. The present work addresses the following questions: Are structural changes measurable on a<br> piano after one year of operation in a concert house? Are these changes perceivable by listeners?<br> Measurements are performed on two occasions: First, on a brand new instrument prepared for sale. Second, on the same<br> piano after having been played for one year in a concert hall. Single notes are recorded with dummy-head-microphones<br> in player position in an anechoic chamber. An extended ABX listening test engaging approx. 100 players, tuners,<br> and builders, addresses the questions whether a variation in tonal quality is audible and if so, what sound properties<br> could lead to a perceived difference. Semantic sub-grouping allows for indication on the vocabulary listeners of varying<br> expertise use to verbalize their sensation. Olodum Full Concert on January 22, 2023 at Quincas Berro d'Água, Pelourinho, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil
<p>Led by Mestre Memeu (Bartolomeu Nunes Pereira), this Olodum concert took place from about 4:00PM-8:00PM at Largo Quincas Berro D'Água in the Pelourinho, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. I frequently reference this concert in my dissertation "Drumming in the Breaks of Blocos Afro: Ancestrality and Black Resistance in Salvador, Brazil." Specifically, I transcribe and analyze several of the breaks (breques). In the video, I tried to signal each moment I witnessed a percussion break (or drum cadence, in Western terms) by including a subtitle of the sequential number of breaks performed throughout the performance (i.e. break #55). Breaks typically veer away from Olodum's primary rhythms of samba-reggae, ritmo da avenida, merengue, and suingue to play a virtuosic break crafted for each song--or standard breaks used for many songs--and typically last between 2-8 measures. The total number of these breaks I witnessed in this 4-hour performance. In this concert alone, I counted 237 breaks. Compared to other ensemble types of Olodum, this concert takes place between percussionists and vocals only, who Lázaro Araújo (AKA Lazinho, an original founding member of Olodum) and Lucas DiFiori. </p>
Live robot dance at the Orebro Feast Concert
<p>A human pianist, a virtual drummer and a dancing robot, all coordinated by AI. This unusual team entertained the audience of the "Festkonsert", an official yearly celebration of Örebro University with the participation of about 250 people. The performance was meant to show the use of AI to orchestrate the collaboration among human and artificial agents in a creative process. The music performed by the pianist was improvised, and an AI system decided the moods, patterns and motions to be performed by the virtual drummer and by the dancing robot.</p> <p>This clip is a recording of the public event.</p> <p><strong>Artists:</strong> Peter Knudsen (human pianist), Pepper (the robot), Oscar Thörn (AI programmer), Alessandro Saffiotti (AI expert)</p>

Le concert d'après
<p>In the radio work <em><strong>Le concert d’après</strong>, </em>Yann recalls going to his first rock concert after surviving the Paris Bataclan terrorist attack of 13 November 2015. In the days and weeks following the attacks, attending a concert was not an insignificant act. His sister was seriously injured at the Bataclan and is still in hospital. The emotions triggered by the music are central to his healing process while he struggles with trauma and fear. Music has become a source of hope, a form of resistance.<br> <strong><em>Le concert d’après</em></strong> was narrated by Yann Lafolie, produced, recorded, and edited by Luis Velasco-Pufleau.</p> <p>Stereo, French, 2:59 min, 2018.</p>

This is the footage captured by the videocamera placed at Studio Acusticum, Piteå, Sweden.</p> <p>Interwoven Sound Spaces is an interdisciplinary project which brought bringing together telematic music performance, interactive textiles, interaction design, and artistic research. A team of researchers collaborated with two professional contemporary music ensembles based in Berlin, Germany, and Piteå, Sweden, and four composers, with the aim of creating a telematic distributed concert taking place simultaneously in two concert halls and online. Central to the project was the development of interactive textiles capable of sensing the musicians’ movements while playing acoustic instruments, and generating data the composers used in their works. Musicians, instruments, textiles, sounds, halls, and data formed a network of entities and agencies that was is reconfigured for each piece, showing how networked music practice enables distinctive musicking techniques. </p>

Data from: Do an ecosystem engineer and environmental gradient act independently or in concert to shape juvenile plant communities? Tests with the leaf-cutter ant Atta laevigata in a Neotropical savanna
Background. Ecosystem Engineers are species that transform habitats in ways that influence other species. While the impacts of many engineers have been well described, our understanding of how their impact varies along environmental gradients remains limited. Although disentangling the effects of gradients and engineers on biodiversity is complicated – the gradients themselves can be altered by engineers – doing so is necessary to advance conceptual and mathematical models of ecosystem engineering. We used leaf-cutter ants (Atta spp.) to investigate the relative influence of gradients and environmental engineers on the abundance and species richness of woody plants. Methods. We conducted our research in South America's Cerrado. With a survey of plant recruits along a canopy cover gradient, and data on environmental conditions that influence plant recruitment, we fit statistical models that addressed the following questions: (1) Does A. laevigata modify the gradient in canopy cover found in our Cerrado site? (2) Do environmental conditions that influence woody plant establishment in the Cerrado vary with canopy cover or proximity to A. laevigata nests? (3) Do A. laevigata and canopy cover act independently or in concert to influence recruit abundance and species richness? Results. We found that environmental conditions previously shown to influence plant establishment in the Cerrado varied in concert with canopy cover, but that ants are not modifying the cover gradient or cover over nests. However, ants are modifying other local environmental conditions, and the magnitude and spatial extent of these changes is consistent across the gradient. In contrast to prior studies, we found that ant-related factors (e.g., proximity to nests, ant changes in surface conditions), rather than canopy cover, had the strongest effect on the abundance of plant recruits. However, the diversity of plants was influenced by both the engineer and the canopy cover gradient. Discussion. Atta laevigata in the Cerrado modify local conditions in ways that have strong but spatially restricted consequences for plant communities. We hypothesize that ants indirectly reduce seedling establishment by clearing litter and reducing soil moisture, which leads to seed and seedling desiccation. Altering soil nutrients could also reduce juvenile growth and survivorship; if so these indirect negative effects of engineering could exacerbate their direct effects of harvesting plants. The effects of Atta appear restricted to nest mounds, but they could be long-lasting because mounds persist long after a colony has died or migrated. Our results support the hypothesis that leaf-cutter ants play a dominant role in Cerrado plant demography. We suggest the ecological and economic footprint of these engineers may increase dramatically in coming decades due to the transformation of the Cerrado by human activities.
Data from: Concerted versus independent evolution and the search for multiple refugia: comparative phylogeography of four forest beetles
Phylogeographic structure and its underlying causes are not necessarily shared among community members, with important implications for using individual organisms as indicators for ecosystem evolution, such as the identification of forest refugia. We used mitochondrial DNA (COI), Bayesian coalescent ancestral state reconstruction (implemented in BEAST) and ecological niche models (ENMs) to construct geo-spatial histories for four co-distributed New Zealand forest beetles (Leiodidae, Nitidulidae, Staphylinidae, Zopheridae) to examine the extent to which they have tracked environmental changes together through time. Hindcast ENMs identified potential forest refugia during the Last Glacial Maximum, while ancestral state reconstruction identified key geographic connections for each species, facilitating direct comparison of dispersal patterns supported by the data and the time frame in which they occurred. Well-supported geographic state transitions for each species were mostly between neighboring regions, favoring a historical scenario of stepping stone colonization of newly-suitable habitat rather than long distance dispersal. No geographic state transitions were shared by all four species, but three shared multiple projected South Island refugia and recent dispersal from the southernmost refugium. In contrast, strongly supported dispersal patterns in the refugia-rich northern South Island suggest more individualistic responses to environmental change in these ecologically similar forest species.
