Fish and consumer data collected from Northeast Shark Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE) from September 2006 to September 2008
Three 1m2 throwtrap sites were selected randomly within a few meters of the location. All fish and macroinvertebrates were sampled within each trap using a seine; the trap is determined to be clear of fish and macroinvertebrates once three empty seines are recovered. The count is reset whenever a fish or invertebrate is caught. Once the trap is determined to be clear, five sweeps are done using a couple of nets. The count resets whenever fish is caught, while an extra sweep is added whenever an invertebrate is captured. The trap is finally cleared once the fifth sweep doesn't capture any organisms. All captured organisms are anesthesized in a plastic cup filled with water and MS222; they are then preserved using a 10% formaldehyde solution for identification and archiving in the lab
Trophic transfer of Everglades marsh consumer biomass to Everglades Estuaries (FCE LTER), Everglades National Park, South Florida, USA, December 2010 to July 2013
We measured the trophic transfer of secondary consumer biomass from the Everglades marshes to the oligohaline reaches of the Shark River by sampling the diets of four common large bodied piscivorous fishes occurring at the marsh-estuary oligohaline ecotone. The four species sampled were Florida bass (Micropterus floridanus), bowfin (Amia calva), common snook (Centropomus undecimalis), and red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus). We sampled diets via pulsed gastric lavage, a relatively non-lethal and effective sampling technique used to measure trophic interactions. We quantified trophic transfer of marsh biomass to the estuary when a focal piscivore consumed a prey species that was likely a migrant from adjacent marshes. A more detailed description of these methods can be found in citation #28. In the presented data, we combined estimates of relative abundance of piscivores from standardized electrofishing techniques (# of piscivores/ 100 meters of sampled shoreline) with biomass of marsh species consumed in the estuary to calculate the biomass (g) transferred to the estuary per 100 meters of shoreline. These values serve as our index of how much biomass is being exported off of the marsh to the estuary through consumer mediated habitat linkages. An important key finding from this work is that disturbance, in particular drought, can sever this biomass linkage, and conserve biomass export off of karstic wetlands to estuaries through of marsh secondary consumer trophic pathways.
Stable isotope values of consumers, producers, and organic matter in the Shark River Slough and Taylor Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), Florida, USA, 2019 – ongoing
Wetland food webs have often been characterized as detrital-based ‘brown’ energy pyramids, whereas the relative role of autotrophic (‘green’) vs. microbial (‘brown’) energy sources falls along a continuum set by physical drivers, as well as autochthonous and allochthonous inputs (Moore et al. 2004; Evans-White & Halvorson 2017) that change with ecosystem development (Schmitz et al. 2006). In the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE), metabolic imbalances, including the collapse of calcareous periphyton mats, begin with a loss of foundation species primary production and legacy organic matter (Gaiser et al. 2006). This process likely enhances heterotrophic microbial productivity (Schulte 2016) and the supply of detrital energy to consumers by changing bioavailable and recalcitrant carbon supplies (Baggett et al. 2013). A shift from complex periphyton communities to transient planktonic communities under elevated P exposure reduces habitat structure and animal refuges but increases ‘green’ energy supplies and edibility (Trexler et al. 2015; Naja et al. 2017). Multiple sites (n=9) within the FCE were selected to document changes in coastal food webs as a result of eutrophication and increasing hydrologic variability. SBC LTER: Beach: Time-series of beach wrack consumers, ongoing since 2011
These data contain the composition, count, and wet biomass of macroinvertebrates along intertidal transects at five selected sandy beaches of the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel. Data collection began in 2012 and is ongoing. This dataset is updated annually. Macroinvertebrates were collected from uniformly spaced cores along the shore-normal transects also used for physical measurements and macrophyte wrack sampling. Cores were pooled and animals and organic material sieved. In the laboratory, all macroinvertebrate species were identified, enumerated, blotted dry and weighed.
Consumer Front Plant Trait Sampling in Two Virginia Coast Salt Marshes, 2018
A consumer front forms when dense aggregations of herbivores form at the edge of a resource. The front then propagates through the ecosystem in search of additional resources. In U.S. Atlantic salt marshes, the purple marsh crab, Sesarma reticulatum, creates consumer fronts as it grazes the smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. Sesarma fronts typically form at the heads of tidal creeks and create distinct zonation between the low marsh, tall-form Spartina zones and the high marsh, short-form Spartina zones, with a denuded band of mudflat in between. Over time, Sesarma consumer fronts are moving directionally inland towards the short-form zone and away from the tall-form zone. This movement inland allows for tall-form Spartina to revegetate, preventing further marsh loss. However, it remains unknown why these consumer fronts are moving inland. To test the hypothesis that plant traits (i.e., nutritional quality, palatability) are driving the Sesarma consumer front inland, we collected Spartina from consumer fronts at 8 unique creekheads across two marsh systems on the Eastern Shore of Virginia (4 consumer fronts at Upper Phillips Creek and 4 at Upshur Creek). Spartina was collected from 15 replicate quadrats (0.0625m^2) from the tall-form low marsh zones (TSA) and from the short-form low marsh zones (SSA) at each creekhead. The short-form zone was delineated into two additional zones, an interior (SSA-I) and an exterior (SSA-E), to assess if there were any differences in plant traits between Spartina being actively grazed (SSA-E, adjacent to consumer front) and those that have not been grazed (SSA-I, 2 meters from consumer front). Collected Spartina plants were then processed for a series of plant traits that can influence herbivore preference.

Fostering safe food handling among consumers: Data from an online survey experiment with 1,973 consumers from Norway and the UK
<p>Data and replication codes for the article "Fostering safe food handling among consumers: Causal evidence on game- and video-based online interventions". 1,973 participants from the UK and Norway, aged 18- 89 years, were assigned to (i) a control condition, or (ii) exposed to a brief information video, or (iii) in addition played an online game (two different conditions). In all conditions, participants answered a pre-survey and seven days later a post-survey. In the survey, next to collecting some information on sociodemographic background and certain preferences, subjects reported some recent food safety behaviors and we elicited beliefs in the efficacy of certain food safety actions, as well as beliefs in myths related to food and hygiene.</p> <p>We use this data set in our publication <br> Koch, A. European consumers ́ preference and willingness to pay for food products labelled as obtained by a circular farming system -in relation to environmental attitudes and consumption behaviours
<p>Data was collected with questionnaire-based research carried out in Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and Spain as part of a European project. The survey questions were designed to obtain the Willingness to pay using 2 different methodologies the discrete choice experiment and the open-end choice experiment. The survey also included questions about consumers environmental attitudes, and consumption behavior (purchase, use and recycling), to identify if them have influence on preferences towards more sustainable food products. The 3 analyzed food products were pork meat, milk and bread, all of them obtained through different agricultural production systems (circular, conventional, and organic agriculture). The sample was stratified in terms of gender and age to be representative to the average population in each country. Furthermore, respondents included in this study were those that are mainly, or in part responsible for the household food shopping. The questionnaire was translated to the languages of the countries involved in the data collection and pre-launched using a pilot sample of 50 consumers in each case study country. Finally, a total of 5,362 validated questionnaires were obtained. Data was collected online using the Qualtrics market research company, and Net panel market company for Hungary from June 2021 to January 2022.</p>
Stream Consumers and Lotic Ecosystem Rates (SCALER) in streams of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, 2014-2016
SCALER attempts to address the question of whether small-scale ecological experiments can be applied to understand the behavior of entire ecological systems. Specifically, the role of comsumers to stream functional processes were examined by measurements of structure and function within stream reaches. These results feed into a broader continent wide examination within a variety of ecological systems. Rates of stream metabolism (photosynthesis and respiration) and nutrient uptake were measured, as well as the way these rates respond to animal exclusions (used to mimic loss of animal diversity in streams). Aquatic food web and biogeochemical responses in three consecutive 75m stream reaches were measured by manipulating densities of fish and amphibians (natural, depletion, and addition). Additionally, various stream characteristics were measured including streamflow, water chemistry, nutrients, metabolism, stream habitat measurements (wetted widths, depths and substrate), and canopy conditions (percent shade). The experiment was carried out every summer between 2014-2016 in streams of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest to capture interannual variability.
Study of Salt Marsh Consumer Diversity and Ecosystem Function on Sapelo Island, Georgia, from May-December 2011
This dataset contains the results of a field study investigating the effect of salt marsh consumer diversity on ecosystem functioning. Our field studies reveal that a diverse consumer assemblage significantly enhances simultaneous functioning of disparate ecosystem processes (i.e., productivity, decomposition, and infiltration). Extreme functional and phylogenetic differences among consumers underlie this relationship. Each marsh consumer affected at least one different ecosystem function and each individual function was affected by more than two consumers.

Indirect upstream effects of dams: consequences of migratory consumer extirpation in Puerto Rico
<p>Large dams degrade the integrity of a wide variety of ecosystems, yet direct downstream effects of dams have received the most attention from ecosystem managers and researchers. We investigated indirect upstream effects of dams resulting from decimation of migratory freshwater shrimp and fish populations in Puerto Rico, USA, in both high- and low-gradient streams. In high-gradient streams above large dams, native shrimps and fishes were extremely rare, whereas similar sites without large dams had high abundances of native consumers. Losses of native fauna above dams dramatically altered their basal food resources and assemblages of invertebrate competitors and prey. Compared to pools in high-gradient streams with no large dams, pool epilithon above dams had 9 times more algal biomass, 20 times more fine benthic organic matter (FBOM), 65 times more fine benthic inorganic matter (FBIM), 28 times more carbon (C), 19 times more nitrogen (N), and 4 times more non-decapod invertebrate biomass. High-gradient riffles upstream from large dams had 5 times more FBIM than did undammed riffles but showed no difference in algal abundance, FBOM, or non-decapod invertebrate biomass. For epilithon of low-gradient streams, differences in basal resources between pools above large dams vs. without large dams were considerably smaller in magnitude than those observed for pools in high-gradient sites. These results match previous stream experiments in which the strength of native shrimp and fish effects increased with stream gradient. Our results demonstrate that dams can indirectly affect upstream free-flowing reaches by eliminating strong top-down effects of consumers. Migratory omnivorous shrimps and fishes occur throughout the tropics, and the consequences of their declines upstream from many tropical dams are likely to be similar to those in Puerto Rico.
