MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Ocean Currents and Biogeochemistry: salinity, temperature and current at CTD and ADCP mooring FOR01 from 2004 ongoing

Moored and bottom-mounted instrumentation (ADCP, CTD, thermistors, wave-tide meters) sampled year-round on the reef of Moorea Island, French Polynesia at LTER 1 fore reef site (FOR01). Sampling began in 2005. All data have been interpolated onto a 20 min grid. ADCP data are organized into 1-meter bins, measured as height from the bottom, to a maximum of 20 bins. All bins may not be filled, and although post-processing attempted to exclude data from bins 'above the surface', users need to exercise caution with the near-surface bins. CTD parameters include Pressure, Temperature, Conductivity, Salinity, and Density. The two moored CTD packages are located approximately 5 and 14 meters above the bottom and there are up to 5 additional temperature thermistors spaced vertically along the mooring line. Note that the upper CTD and temperature thermistor data were terminated in 2020, and the bottom CTD was terminated in February 2022. There are 2 bottom mounted thermistors in the vicinity of the mooring at 10 and 20 meter depth. A bottom-mounted wave-tide meter at 10-meter depth provides a measure of significant wave height and dominant wave period at a 2-hour sampling interval. Tide-related data may be calculated from bottom-mounted pressure sensor data.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Long-term Population and Community Dynamics: Fishes, ongoing since 2005 (Reformatted to the ecocomDP Design Pattern)

This data package is formatted as an ecocomDP (Ecological Community Data Pattern). For more information on ecocomDP see https://github.com/EDIorg/ecocomDP. This Level 1 data package was derived from the Level 0 data package found here: https://pasta.lternet.edu/package/metadata/eml/knb-lter-mcr/6/58. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: These data describe the species abundance and size distributions of fishes surveyed as part of MCR LTER's annual reef fish monitoring program. This study began in 2005 and the dataset is updated annually. The abundances of all mobile taxa of fishes (Scarids, Labrids, Acanthurids, Serranids, etc.) observed on a five by fifty meter transect which extends from the bottom to the surface of the water column are recorded by a diver using SCUBA. The diver then swims back along a one by fifty meter section of the original transect line and records the abundances of all non-mobile or cryptic taxa of fishes (Pomacentids, Gobiids, Cirrhitids, Holocentrids etc). Surveys are conducted between 0900 and 1600 hours (Moorea time) during late July or early August each year. In 2006, divers also began to estimate the size (length) of each fish observed to the nearest half cm. Four replicate transects are surveyed in each of six locations on the forereef (two on each of Moorea's three sides), six locations on the backreef (two on each of Moorea's three sides) and on six locations on the fringing reef (two on each of Moorea's three sides) for a total of 72 individual transects. Transects are permanently marked using a series of small, stainless steel posts affixed to the reef. Transects on the forereef are located at a depth of approximately 12m, those on the backreef are located at a depth of approximately 1.5m and those on the fringing reef are located at a depth of approximately 10m. In addition to the biotic data collected, divers also record data on the date and time each transect was surveyed,

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Long-term Community Dynamics: Backreef (Lagoon) Corals Annual Survey, ongoing since 2005 (Reformatted to the ecocomDP Design Pattern)

This data package is formatted as an ecocomDP (Ecological Community Data Pattern). For more information on ecocomDP see https://github.com/EDIorg/ecocomDP. This Level 1 data package was derived from the Level 0 data package found here: https://pasta.lternet.edu/package/metadata/eml/knb-lter-mcr/1038/10. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: This dataset contains the percentage cover of all stony corals (Scleractinia, pooled among genera) and other major groups analyzed from 0.5 x 0.5 m photographic quadrats at the Backreef habitat at the Moorea Coral Reef LTER, French Polynesia. This survey time series began in 2005 and is repeated each year in April. Functional groups counted are: Scleractinian corals, Macroalgae, Crustose Coralline Algae / Bare Space, Soft Corals, Hydrocorals (Millepora), Algal Turf and Sand. The coral community was sampled photographically in all represented habitats surrounding the island: Fringing Reef, Lagoon, and Outer Reef. This dataset contains only Lagoon (Backreef) data (see knb-lter-mcr.4 for the other habitats) and is structured in a repeated-measures protocol to allow a statistical contrast of sites, shores and times. Community structure was determined through a coarse analysis of the benthic community, initially completed in situ (2005), but using photoquadrats from 2006. There are quadrats analyzed at each of five areas within each site, and the areas are revisited (but not the quadrats) each year to support the repeated measures design. There are two tables available, providing different views of the same data: a long table having all values in one column and a wide table having a separate column for each observed object. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Modeling the effects of selectively fishing key functional groups of herbivores on coral resilience; data for Cook et al., 2023 Ecosphere

These data and code were generated in support of the manuscript: Cook DT, Schmitt RJ, Holbrook SJ, and HV Moeller, Ecosphere. To investigate the impacts of selectively harvesting functional groups of herbivorous fishes on coral resilience, we used a dynamic model that is grounded by the coral reef system in Moorea, French Polynesia. Our model simulates the fraction of a reef occupied through time by classes of key benthic spaceholders (coral, two stages of macroalgae, and turf). Benthic and fishing dynamics are linked through the harvesting of two functional groups of herbivorous fishes. We utilize data collected on the abundance of fishes on the reef and in the catch in Moorea, French Polynesia to inform our model and to empirically explore patterns of fishing selectivity. These data and code were published in Ecosphere and were a part of the thesis of D. Cook (2023). This manuscript uses data collected by the U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF) Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research (MCR LTER) site under Grant No. OCE 2224354 (and earlier awards). Additional financial support to the MCR LTER site was provided through a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Ocean Currents and Biogeochemistry: salinity, temperature and current at CTD and ADCP mooring FOR04 from 2004 ongoing

Moored and bottom-mounted instrumentation (ADCP, CTD, thermistors, wave-tide meters) sampled year-round on the reef of Moorea Island, French Polynesia at LTER 4 fore reef site (FOR04). The two moored CTD packages are located approximately 5 and 14 meters above the bottom, and there are up to 5 additional temperature thermistors spaced vertically along the mooring line. Note that the upper CTD and temperature thermistor data were terminated in January 2020. Bottom CTD was terminated July 2021. There are 2 bottom mounted thermistors in the vicinity of the mooring at 10 and 20 meter depth. A bottom-mounted wave-tide meter provides a measure of significant wave height and dominant wave period at a 2-hour sampling interval. Tide-related data may be calculated from bottom-mounted pressure sensor data.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Benthic Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR), ongoing since 2009

These data contain a time-series from sequential deployments of an ALW-CMP PAR sensor recording quanta of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) underwater between wavelengths 400 nm to 700 nm every two seconds. The sensor window is wiped free of algae periodically to prevent fouling. Deployments are three to six months in length. The sensor was mounted at 17 m depth on the fore reef, and at 2 m depth on the Backreef. PAR irradiance is measured as quanta in micromoles of photons per square meter per second.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: 3D photogrammetry improves measurement of growth and biodiversity patterns in branching corals; data for Curtis 2023, Coral Reefs

These data and code were generated in support of the manuscript: Curtis JS, Galvan JW, Primo A, Osenberg CW, and AC Stier, Coral Reefs. We collected manual and photogrammetry-based measurements of coral size and volume to examine which method best described short-term coral growth and links between coral habitat and biodiversity of CAFI (coral-associated fishes and invertebrates). This study was completed between August and December 2019 on an experimental array located in the back reef off the south shore of Moorea, French Polynesia. These data were published in Coral Reefs, analyses and full methods descriptions of this model can be found in the manuscript “3D photogrammetry improves measurement of growth and biodiversity patterns in branching corals”. This manuscript uses data collected by the U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF) Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research (MCR LTER) site under Grant No. OCE 2224354 (and earlier awards). Six years of demography data for 11 reef coral species

<p>Scleractinian corals are colonial animals with a range of life history strategies that make up diverse species assemblages that contribute to coral reef growth. We tagged and tracked approximately 30 colonies from each of 11 species for six years (2009-2015) in order to measure their vital rates and competitive interactions on the reef crest at Trimodal Reef, Lizard Island, Australia. Pairs of species were chosen from five growth forms (massive [<em>Goniastrea pectinata&nbsp;</em>and&nbsp;<em>G. retiformis</em>], digitate [<em>Acropora humilis</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>A. cf. digitifera</em>], corymbose [<em>A. millepora</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>A. nasuta</em>], tabular [<em>A. cytherea</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>A. hyacinthus</em>] and arborescent [<em>A. robusta</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>A. intermedia</em>]) where one species of the pair was locally rare and the other abundant. (An extra corymbose species,&nbsp;<em>A. spathulata</em>&nbsp;was included when it became apparent that&nbsp;<em>A. millepora</em>&nbsp;was too rare to work with on the reef crest, making the 11 species in total.) The tagged colonies were visited each year in the weeks prior to mass spawning. During visits, photographs were taken by two or more observers from directly above and on the horizontal plane with a scale plate to track planar area. Dead or missing colonies were recorded and new colonies tagged in order to maintain approximately 30 colonies per species throughout the six years of the study. In addition to tracking tagged corals, 30 fragments were collected from neighboring untagged colonies of each species for counting numbers of eggs per polyp (fecundity); and fragments of untagged colonies were brought into the laboratory where spawned eggs were collected for size and energy measurements. We also conducted surveys at the study site to generate size structure data for each species in several of the years. Each tagged colony photograph was digitized by at least two people. Therefore, we could examine sources of error in planar area for both photographers and outliners. Competitive interactions were recorded for a subset of species by measuring the margins of tagged colony outlines interacting with neighboring corals. The study was abruptly ended by Tropical Cyclone Nathan that killed all but nine of the over 300 tagged colonies in early 2015. Nonetheless, these data will be of use to other researchers interested in coral demography and coexistence, functional ecology, and parametrizing population, community and ecosystem models.</p>

At each site, and in each of 4 habitats (fringing reef, backreef, forereef 10-m depth, forereef 17-m depth), 5 permanent 10-m long transects have been established and abundance estimates are made at fixed positions along each transect (n=10, 0.25 m2 quadrats per transect) allowing a repeated measures statistical analysis for the detection of temporal trends. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Long-term Community Dynamics: Backreef (Lagoon) Corals Annual Survey, ongoing since 2005 (Reformatted to a Darwin Core Archive)

This data package is formatted as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A, event core). For more information on Darwin Core see https://www.tdwg.org/standards/dwc/. This Level 2 data package was derived from the Level 1 data package found here: https://pasta.lternet.edu/package/metadata/eml/edi/321/3, which was derived from the Level 0 data package found here: https://pasta.lternet.edu/package/metadata/eml/knb-lter-mcr/1038/10. Detailed methods are available in the protocols section. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Population Dynamics: Symbiodinium population initial sampling conditions in corals of Moorea

These data consist of sample collection locations and conditions only, not the results of sequencing. These data were an initial collection of an expected time series which was not repeated. Clade data derived from the sample collection described here are archived on GeoSymbio. Coral are symbiotic with photosynthetic dinoflagellates from the genus Symbiodinium. There are eight divergent clades (A-H) within the genus which each contain many genetic varieties. Different types of Symbiodinium have been shown to affect the growth rate and thermal tolerance of the coral. The diversity and population structure of Symbiodinium on a reef and how it changes over time is therefore critical to the stability and resilience of coral reefs. Our research conducted through the MCR LTER project aims at defining the population structure of Symbiodinium present in the corals of Moorea and documenting changes over time. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2022).
