Cross cultural tears: A systematic investigation of the interpersonal effects of emotional crying across different cultural backgrounds
<p>The present project wants to examine the importance of emotional crying as an attachment behaviour and its fundamental role across a number of diverse cultures.</p> <p>Emotional tears are uniquely human and have fascinated scholars across several decades (Vingerhoets, 2013). Some researchers argue that tearful crying played a significant role in the evolution of humankind with regard to social development and solidarity (Walter, 2006). Recent years have seen an increased interest in exploring the interpersonal effects of human tears (see Gračanin, Bylsma, & Vingerhoets, 2018 for a review), with findings that emotional tears foster approach or support behavior (Gračanin, Krahmer, Rinck, & Vingerhoets, 2018) and crying individuals being evaluated as more communal (e.g., Zickfeld, van de Ven, Schubert, & Vingerhoets, 2018). These findings generally fit the hypothesis that emotional tears constitute a social act, promote social bonding and fulfill an attachment function (Nelson, 2005; Bowlby, 1982; Gračanin, Bylsma, et al., 2018; Murube, Murube, & Murube, 1999; Radcliffe-Brown, 1922; Vingerhoets, 2013). The present projects aims to answer the question whether emotional tears present a fundamental form of solidarity and bonding and whether the findings on increased attributions of warmth and higher approach intentions for tearful individuals replicate across a number of diverse contexts.</p> <p><a href="https://osf.io/fj9bd">Published in OSF: https://osf.io/fj9bd</a>.</p> <p>The OPen SCience FRamework also includes:</p> <ul> <li>Data from the pilot study: https://osf.io/txcw3/</li> <li>General information about the translation process (including the Portuguese version https://osf.io/t4cas/),</li> <li>Data management and research protocol (https://osf.io/5bh7m/),</li> <li>Approvals from ethical committees (https://osf.io/v8rqh/),</li> <li>Data and descriptive document of supplementary analyses (https://osf.io/s8ack/),</li> <li>Data and syntax (https://osf.io/x2pks/),</li> <li>Information about stimuli (https://osf.io/x2pks/) </li> </ul>
Replication files for: Strongmen Cry Too: The Effect of Aerial Bombing on Voting for The Incumbent in Competitive Autocracies
<p>The NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, which lasted from March 24, 1999 until June 10, 1999, was the largest air campaign in Europe since the bombing of Britain and Germany in World War II. The air raids lasted for 78 days and hit 108 out of 160 municipalities, excluding Kosovo and Montenegro. The bombing was spread out and largely aimed at military barracks, industrial facilities, transportation networks, and communication lines. This repo provides a novel dataset with information on over 1,000 targets in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, including the date, location, target type, and fatalities. Included is also R code for the replication of my article "Strongmen Cry Too: The Effect of Aerial Bombing on Voting for The Incumbent in Competitive Autocracies" that was accepted for publication at Journal of Peace Research.</p>
Effects of the type of lunch meal and teaching-learning methods on CRI student engagement in afternoon classes.
<p><br> The post-lunch slump is a natural dip in energy caused not only by our circadian cycles but also as a result of digestive processes in our body after consuming lunch meals. It being a widely known concept, there are ample studies that focus on its effects on academic performance of students. While this dip in energy does affect student engagement to a large extent, there are also studies on how the teaching-learning methods are a factor affecting academic performance. However, there are no relevant studies that aim to look at both these factors in tandem, i.e. the effect of lunch along with the teaching-learning methods in the afternoon classrooms as factors influencing academic performance and student engagement. This paper aims to study this area of topic hypothesising that having a more balanced lunch along with engaging in more interactive classes would positively correlate with student engagement in afternoon classes. The study was conducted with bachelors and masters students at the CRI, University of Paris through surveys that were sent to students at the end of their class day. </p> <p>Due to lack of adequate data, the study was not able to produce significant correlations. However smaller nuances of the relationship between lunch, teaching-learning methods and student engagement were found. While engagement in classrooms did seem to be maximum when it was interactive and only 50% of students' lunch was formed of carbohydrates, no significant correlations were found to confirm the hypotheses.</p>

Crying Child Figurine
This porcelain figurine dating to the late 19th century was recovered archaeologically from a privy behind the Industrial School for Girls in Dorchester. The school operated from 1859 to 1941, serving as a boarding home for disadvantaged girls. While at the school the girls were trained to work as domestic servants, and many of their stories have been revealed through a combination of archaeological and historic research. Baby cry recognition is independent of motherhood but improved by experience and exposure
Neurobiological changes affecting new mothers are known to support the development of the mother-infant relationship (the "maternal brain"). However, which aspects of parenting are actually mother-specific and which rely on general cognitive abilities remains debated. For example, refuting earlier findings, a recent study demonstrated that fathers identify their own baby from their cries just as well as mothers. Here we show that this performance is not only independent of sex, but also of parenthood status. We found that mothers' ability to recognize their newborn from their cries increased rapidly within few days postpartum, with highly multiparous mothers performing better. However, both male and female nonparents could similarly recognize an assigned baby, even after a very short exposure. As in mothers, both the initial amount of experimental exposure to the baby's cries (learning opportunity) and prior experience of caring for infants (auditory expertise) affected participants' performance. We thus suggest that, rather than being female-specific or motherhood-dependent, the ability to recognise a baby from their cries derives from general auditory and learning skills. By being available to nonparents of both sexes it may contribute to the caregiving flexibility required for efficient cooperative breeding in humans.
