H.J. Andrews Forest Discovery Trail: An interpretation of place based on curriculum of interpretive learning trail and field trip support, 2016

The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest (HJA) in the Oregon Cascades is one of 24 sites in the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network. It supports research on forests, streams, and watersheds, and fosters collaborations between ecosystem science, education, natural resource management, and the humanities. The site currently hosts 85 interdisciplinary research projects, as well as experiential training for undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, the HJA runs a vibrant professional development program for teachers. Because much of the HJA’s terrain is steep and occupied with sensitive research materials, middle and high school visits are limited to tours in designated areas. The Discovery Trail was developed in 2011 as a place for visitors (~1800 in 2014) to explore the forest and site research themes from HJA headquarters, but it is not yet amenable to unguided educational exploration. We have designed an interpretive learning trail and field trip support framework for the Discovery Trail. Our primary objective is to educate students about place while guiding them to reflect upon their own relationships with place and personal responsibility for stewardship behavior. Long-term place-based conservation research is woven with creative writing from the HJA writer’s residency program and paired with reflection and creative inquiry. Interactive trail stops enable students to engage the forest from multiple perspectives. The Discovery Trail is wired for intranet wifi and content and assessment will be delivered by digital media (i.e. iPads). We will evaluate conceptual learning according to the Framework for the Next Generation Science Standards, as well as observe affective changes in sense of place, empowerment, and expressions of care or empathy through analysis of student responses to the trail activities. <p><strong>Acquiring musculoskeletal skills with curriculum-based reinforcement learning, Neuron 2024</strong></p> <p>Here we provide the weights of the neural network policies used for the analysis presented in our article.</p> <p>The archives whose names start with a number (01 - 32) correspond to the 32 curriculum steps to train the Baoding Balls policy which ranked first at the MyoChallenge 2022. The code used for the training and which can be used to test the policies can be found at https://github.com/amathislab/myochallenge.</p> <p>The archives <em>hand_pose, hand_reach, pen </em>and <em>reorient</em> correspond to the other policies used in the article. They were developed in the paper <em>Latent exploration for reinforcement learning</em>, Chiappa et al., NeurIPS 2023. Data from: Cadaveric emergency cricothyrotomy training for non-surgeons using a bronchoscopy-enhanced curriculum

<p>Emergency cricothyrotomy training for non-surgeons providing critical care is important as rare "cannot intubate or oxygenate events" may occur multiple times in a provider's career when surgical expertise is not immediately available. However, such training is highly variable and often infrequent so enhancing these experiences is important.</p> <p>Our study was performed after implementing a program to train non-surgeon providers on cadaveric donors. Standard training with an instructional video and live coaching was enhanced by bronchoscopic visualization of the trachea allowing participants to review their technique after performing scalpel and Seldinger-technique procedures, and to review their colleagues' technique on live video. Feasibility was measured through assessing helpfulness for trainees, cost, setup time, quality of images, and operator needs. Footage from the bronchoscopy recordings was analyzed to assess puncture-to-tube time and errors. Participants submitted pre- and post-session surveys assessing their levels of experience and gauging their confidence and anxiety with cricothyrotomies.</p> <p>We found our training program met feasibility criteria for low costs, setup time, and operator needs. Furthermore, all 24 participants rated the cadaveric session as helpful and demonstrated efficient technique by puncture-to-tube times. Bronchoscopy videos revealed that sharp instrument puncturing of the posterior tracheal wall was common and that improper tube placement occurred but was uncommon. Bronchoscopic enhancement was rated as quite or extremely helpful for visualizing the trachea and to assess depth of instrumentation. There was a significant increase in confidence and decrease in performance anxiety after the session.</p> <p>Our findings confirm that supplementing cadaveric emergent cricothyrotomy training programs with tracheal bronchoscopy is feasible, helpful to trainees, meets prior documented times for efficient technique, and detects technical errors that would have been missed in a standard training program. Bronchoscopic enhancement is a valuable addition to cricothyrotomy cadaveric training programs and may help avoid real-life complications.</p>

Governments have been benchmarking their OGD initiatives across standard indices like ODIN, OKFN, Open Data Barometer, etc. (Lnenicka et al., 2022; Lnenicka and Nikiforova, 2021) and ample research exists on assessing the quality of OGD portals from the demand (i.e. the governments&rsquo; efforts at maintaining the quality of datasets) and supply (i.e. the perceptions of users regarding the quality of datasets) side (Crusoe et al., 2019; de Souza et al., 2022; Islam et al., 2021; Kaasenbrood et al., 2015; Khurshid et al., 2022; Lnenicka et al., 2022; Purwanto et al., 2020; Saxena and Janssen, 2017; Shehata and Elgllab, 2021; Talukder et al., 2019; Weerakkody et al., 2017; Wirtz et al., 2016; Wirtz et al., 2018; Wirtz et al., 2019; Zuiderwijk et al., 2015). Given the magnitude of academic interest on OGD- especially in the last 10 years- it remains to be assessed as to how far has the domain progressed in the academic environs and surprisingly, no research has been conducted to elucidate the infusion of this very significant domain- that is relatable to the extent to which the governments are forwarding their claims regarding the furtherance of transparent and corruption-free administration apart from bolstering citizen participation, collaboration and trust (Gil-Garcia et al., 2020; Hellberg and Hedstrom, 2015) besides serving as a means for value creation and innovation by a range of stakeholders (Jetzek et al., 2012; Jetzek et al., 2014) - in the diverse platforms that are meant for furthering academic dialogue and discussion.</p>
