Spatial datasets associated with decontamination and remediation operations following the Fukushima nuclear accident, Japan (2011–2023)

<p>At the onset of the full reopening in Spring 2023 of the Difficult-to-Return Zone of Northeastern Japan following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident that took place in March 2011, several spatial layers were regrouped and compiled to facilitate environmental studies dealing with the redistribution of radiocesium fallout across landscapes.</p> <p><strong>The current dataset is composed of 23 shapefiles including those of the delineations of different spatial zones (Intensive Contamination Survey Areas &ndash; ICAs, Special Decontamination Zones &ndash; SDZ, Difficult-to-Return Zone &ndash;</strong> <strong>DTRZ, and FNDPP location) (Evrard et al. 2019), municipalities where mushroom consumption restrictions were enforced (restricted and partially lifted restrictions), river hydrographic networks and their respective drainage areas (Mano, Niida, Ota, Takase, and Ukedo), dam reservoirs and drainage areas (Mano, Ogaki, Takanokura, and Yokokawa), multiple administrative delineations in Japan (whole Japan administrative boundaries, Prefectures, and municipalities) (GIS, 2016), and one raster file of the reconstruction of initial 137Cs fallout across eastern Japan (from Kato et al., 2019).</strong></p> <p><strong>The current dataset provides a support to a publication submitted to the SOIL journal:<br></strong></p> <div> <div><strong>Evrard, O., Chalaux-Clergue, T., Chaboche, P.-A., Wakiyama, Y., and Thiry Y. (2023). Research and Management Challenges Following Soil and Landscape Decontamination at the Onset of the Reopening of the Difficult-To-Return Zone, Fukushima (Japan)&rsquo;.&nbsp;<em>SOIL</em> 9: 479&ndash;97.&nbsp;<a href="https://doi.org/10.5194/soil-9-479-2023">https://doi.org/10.5194/soil-9-479-2023</a>.&nbsp;</strong></div> <div>&nbsp;</div> </div> <p>All map processing was carried out using QGIS 3.26.0 (QGIS, 2022) and under the EPSG:WGS 84 projection system.</p> <p>The 137Cs fallout raster (in Bq m-2, decay-corrected to July 2011) was generated from the point grid of Kato et al. (2019). A total of 126 tiles (0.25 x 0.25 degree) were generated by Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation using the '<em>IDW interpolation'</em> tool with the following settings: distance coefficient P = 1.0 and pixel size (x and y) = 0.0015 degree. Tiles were then merged into a single tile using the raster<em> 'Merge'</em> tool. The initial point grid footprint was manually delineated to define the spatial applicability zone of the airborne survey. A buffer zone corresponding to half plus 10% of the longest distance between two airborne points (x = 0.002, y = 0.003), i.e. 0.0017 degree, was generated using the '<em>buffer'</em> tool. The single tile was then cut according to the footprint of the buffer zone using the&nbsp;<em>'clip a raster by a mask layer'</em> tool. A <em>single-band pseudo-colour </em>scale is provided and displays pixels with a value above 1000 Bq m-2 (eq. global background).</p>

Data from: Intraspecific DNA contamination distorts subtle population structure in a marine fish: decontamination of herring samples before restriction-site associated (RAD) sequencing and its effects on population genetic statistics

Wild specimens are often collected in challenging field conditions, where samples may be contaminated with the DNA of conspecific individuals. This contamination can result in false genotype calls, which are difficult to detect, but may also cause inaccurate estimates of heterozygosity, allele frequencies, and genetic differentiation. Marine broadcast spawners are especially problematic, because population genetic differentiation is low and samples are often collected in bulk and sometimes from active spawning aggregations. Here, we used contaminated and clean Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) samples to test (i) the efficacy of bleach decontamination, (ii) the effect of decontamination on RAD genotypes, and (iii) the consequences of contaminated samples on population genetic analyses. We collected fin tissue samples from actively spawning (and thus contaminated) wild herring and non-spawning (uncontaminated) herring. Samples were soaked for 10 minutes in bleach or left untreated, and extracted DNA was used to prepare DNA libraries using a restriction-site associated DNA (RAD) approach. Our results demonstrate that intraspecific DNA contamination affects patterns of individual and population variability, causes an excess of heterozygotes, and biases estimates of population structure. Bleach decontamination was effective at removing intraspecific DNA contamination and compatible with RAD sequencing, producing high-quality sequences, reproducible genotypes, and low levels of missing data. Although sperm contamination may be specific to broadcast spawners, intraspecific contamination of samples may be common and difficult to detect from high-throughput sequencing data, and can impact downstream analyses.

Data from: Factors associated with possession of accurate knowledge regarding occupational health management among operations leaders of radiation decontamination workers in Fukushima, Japan: a cross-sectional study

Objectives: An operations leader (OL) takes an important role in occupational health management for radiation decontamination workers in Japan, and candidates for the position must participate in a training session to acquire the necessary knowledge as required by law. However, it has not been clarified whether the candidates for the OL position actually possess accurate knowledge regarding occupational health management for such work after the training session. We therefore aimed at examining the current occupational health management knowledge among the candidates and investigating factors related to the knowledge, with hypothesis that possession of accurate knowledge is associated with prior experience of having worked in radiation decontamination. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: The training sessions held by Fukushima Prefecture Labor Standard Associations in Fukushima, Japan, in 2017. Participants: Eighty male candidates participated in the training sessions. Outcome: The number/proportion of correct answers to the questions regarding occupational health management such as those on working environment management, control of operations, and health management. Results: The proportion of those who possessed accurate knowledge regarding working environment management, control of operations, and health management, was 68.8%, 55.0%, and 51.2%, respectively. Experience of radiation decontamination work was associated with the possession of inaccurate knowledge regarding working environment management (OR 0.140 [95% CI 0.042, 0.464]), and the uncertainty of future radiation decontamination work schedules in difficult-to-return zones was associated with the possession of accurate knowledge regarding health management (OR 4.382 [95% CI 1.525, 12.591]). Conclusions: Previous experience in radiation decontamination work may hinder the ability to acquire accurate information regarding working environment management among candidates for an OL position. To promote adequate occupational health management for radiation decontamination workers, it is required to establish an effective instructional method for the OL candidate training sessions with consideration of previous relevant experience.
