This Level 1 data package was derived from the Level 0 data package found here: https://portal.edirepository.org/nis/mapbrowse?scope=knb-lter-mcr&identifier=1039&revision=9 The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: These data describe the abundance of Acanthaster planci, Crown of Thorns Sea stars, surveyed as part of MCR LTER's annual reef fish monitoring program. This study began in 2005 and the dataset is updated annually. The abundances of A. planci observed on a five by fifty meter transect are recorded by a diver using SCUBA. Surveys are conducted between 0900 and 1600 hours (Moorea time) during late July or early August each year. Four replicate transects are surveyed in each of three habitats (forereef, backreef and fringing reef) at six locations, two on each of Moorea's three sides, on the forereef, six locations on the backreef (two on each of Moorea's three sides for a total of 72 individual transects. Transects are permanently marked using a series of small, stainless steel posts affixed to the reef. Transects on the forereef are located at a depth of approximately 12m, those on the backreef are located at a depth of approximately 1.5m and those on the fringing reef are located at a depth of approximately 10m. This monitoring program is consistent with the protocols adopted by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network and the Australian Institute of Marine Science for use with the Great Barrier Reef Long-term Monitoring Program. The 27 sites are divided into three replicates for six primary successional stages on the floodplains (3 replicates X 6 successional stages = 18 sites) and three replicates for three secondary successional stages in the uplands (3 replicates X 3 successional stages = 9 sites). Data include: 1) Visual estimates of percent cover, 2) Stem counts (the number of individuals/species), and 3) Heights (cm) for "tall shrub species" in twenty 4 m2 plots. Shrubs are considered "Tall shrubs" if they are Salix sp., Alnus sp., Rosa acicularis, Viburnum edule, Betula nana, Betula glandulosa, or Rubus idaeus. Initial colonziations plots (FP0s, SL1s, HR1A) were remeasured every year. Early successional plots were remeasured every 2-4 years. Later succesional plots were remeasured approximately every five years. <p><strong><em>This demo dataset over Africa is deprecated. Please see <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3518037">this global dataset</a> instead.</em></strong></p> <p>Demonstration land cover maps over Africa&nbsp;at 100m resolution for epoch year 2018, from the global component of the Copernicus Land Service and&nbsp;derived from PROBA-V satellite observations.</p> <p>The maps include the main discrete classification (23 classes aligned with UN-FAO&#39;s LCCS), a set of cover fractions (%) for the 10 main classes and additional quality layers (e.g. density of input data).</p> <p>For the near-real time (nrt) epoch 2018, the classifier and regression models of base year 2015 are used, and the time window of the classified metrics covers one full year prior (2017) and three months pastor (Jan-March 2019) data. The nrt map can then be supplied in the fourth month after the most recent completed calendar year, and is updated (consolidated) afterwards by using a full year of paster data (when epoch 2019-nrt is produced, epoch 2018 is consolidated).</p> <p>The layers with the probability&nbsp; of the discrete classification and the standard deviation of the cover fractions are only provided for the base year (epoch 2015). Soil volumetric water content calculated from neutron hydroprobe data at 15 NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1989-2011 (Deprecated)

This data package contains soil water content data calculated from monthly neutron hydroprobe count measurements made at 15 net primary production (NPP) study locations on Jornada Experimental Range (JER) and Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) lands. Once a month, neutron probe measurements are made at 10 depths (where possible) at each of 10 access tubes at each of the 15 NPP sites using a neutron probe (CPN Model 503DR Hydroprobe). The raw dataset, also on EDI (knb-lter-jrn.210013001), consists of the count of thermalized neutrons at 30 cm depth intervals to a maximum depth of 300 cm. In this data package, the raw neutron counts have been converted to volumetric water content (VWC) to a maximum depth of 270 cm using calibration equations (deepest probe depths are excluded from VWC calculations). The NPP sites these measurements are made at represent the 5 dominant vegetation types of the Jornada Basin, which consist of 3 shrub (creosotebush, mesquite dune, and tarbush) and 2 grass (upland grassland and playa) types. Three NPP sites are located in each of the types. This data collection is ongoing with new data collected monthly. NOTE: This data package is deprecated and will not be updated in the future. These VWC values were calculated using a now-outdated calibration method. Values of VWC calculated with the improved and fully documented calibration method are available in another EDI data package (knb-lter-jrn.210013003).
