Continuous salinity, temperature and depth measurements from moored hydrographic data loggers deployed at GCE1_Hydro (Sapelo River near Eulonia, Georgia) from 01-Jan-2021 through 31-Dec-2021

Conductivity, temperature and pressure were measured continuously at Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling location GCE1_Hydro (Sapelo River near Eulonia, Georgia) from 01-Jan-2021 through 31-Dec-2021. Observations were logged at 30 minute intervals by moored Sea-Bird Electronics MicroCAT 37-SM data loggers and downloaded approximately quarterly. Salinity, depth and sigma-t (density anomaly) were calculated from the measured parameters using standard UNESCO algorithms. This data set was collected as part of the GCE-LTER Project continuous salinity, temperature and water level monitoring program.

Snow depth and snow water equivalent measurements along a road course and historic snow course in the Andrews Experimental Forest, 1978 to present

With an increase in emphasis on monitoring climate change impacts and change in the form of precipitation at HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, snow data collection within our climate monitoring program, a snow course to document depths of snow was designed around a dispersed sampling scheme rather than a point intensive scheme as previously employed in the historic Reference Stand snow course. Primary objectives are to document the presence/absence of snow, snow depth, and time of melt-off. Snow depths are verified using stakes placed near the road to allow for routine and frequent observation. Stakes are placed at different locations, elevations and aspects in paired forested/open sites. Time-lapse cameras were deployed at all the stakes to allow for daily measurements beginning in fall 2014. Truthing of points with snow core sampling for snow moisture content (snow water equivalent) is done when possible, usually 1-2 times per year. Cameras are set to take 3 readings per day (09:00, 12:00, 15:00 PST). One snow depth and coverage is extracted from the images per stake per day.

Sea ice thickness, snow depth, and sea ice freeboard in lagoon sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2019-ongoing

Physical parameters related to snow and sea ice have implications for lagoon circulation, sea-air heat exchange, and underwater light regimes. To understand these relationships and their greater effect on ecosystem function, the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystem LTER (BLE LTER) uses in situ methods to assess snow depth, ice freeboard, and ice thickness in select water bodies across the Beaufort Sea coast (Elson Lagoon, Simpson Lagoon, Kaktovik Lagoon, Jago Lagoon, and Stefansson Sound). Sea ice thickness is the distance from sea ice bottom to top, not including snow. Freeboard, determined in the same drilled hole, is the distance from the surface of the water to the top of the ice, not including snow cover. These measurements are made annually, close to maximum ice thickness (typically April).

Physical soil characteristics, microbial community composition, extracellular enzymatic activity, biologically based phosphorus (BBP) pools, and available phosphorus from two soil depths, four microhabitats, and four landforms at the Jornada Experimental Range, 2021.

This dataset contains physical soil characteristics, PLFA based microbial community composition, extracellular enzymatic activity, nitrate and ammonium activity, and phosphorus availability in various phosphorus pools (Biologically Based Phosphorus, potassium sulfate, Olsen-P). Soils were collected from two depths (0-2cm, 2-30 cm), four microhabitats (grass, shrub, biocrust, interspace), and four landforms (alluvial flat, alluvial fan remnant, erosional scarplet, fan piedmont – see coordinates) within the Jornada Experimental Range in July 2021 to answer questions about how these variables change across these spatial scales in drylands. This project was a collaboration between researchers at New Mexico State University and The University of Texas at El Paso as part of the Drylands Critical Zone Thematic Cluster within the Critical Zone Network. This dataset is complete.

Temperature, Salinity, Sound Velocity, Location, Depth, Heading, and Velocity measured aboard the R/V Nanuq for the Northern Gulf of Alaska LTER site, 2020-2021

This dataset describes measurements from a thermosalinograph and navigation device used aboard the R/V Nanuq during cruises in Resurrection Bay and the Gulf of Alaska. Thermosalinograph data includes temperature, salinity, conductivity, and sound speed measurements every five seconds while the instrument was in use. Navigation data describes latitude, longitude, depth, heading, course over ground, and speed over ground. Data are collected on R/V Nanuq using the ship's GPS devices and a Seabird Electronics SBE-45 thermosalinograph (TSG) that samples uncontaminated pumped seawater. Temperature and conductivity data are sampled every 5 seconds and salinity and sound velocity are derived parameters. No data quality control has been applied to this data, so users should be cautious that conductivity, salinity and sound speed dropouts to due bubbles are common when the ship is plowing through large waves. Data are collected by a variety of projects, including from the NSF-funded Northern Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research (NGA LTER) program, the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council (EVOSTC) Gulf Watch Alaska GAK1 project, the UAF Sub-Arctic Oceanography Field Course, the Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS) glider program, and others.
