Active nematics director and flow field data

We conduct our experiments on the microtubule-kinesin active nematic system pioneered in Sanchez et al. 2012. The long rod-like MTs are bundled together via depletion interactions and are driven out of equilibrium by the action of kinesin-streptavidin motor protein complexes, which are units that induce relative motion utilizing ATP
as the energy source. Depletion forces also aid in driving the MT bundles to form bundles to the oil-water
fluid interface, where they execute self-sustained bending and buckling instabilities. The system is extensile,
which means that active stresses cause the MT bundles to extend in length and contract in width.

To investigate the dynamics of defects in 2D flat space, we prepare the active nematic in a flow-cell setup
where the entire pool of ingredients is confined in a 2D sealed cell roughly 10 cm2 in area and 100 μm in
thickness. The lower surface of the cell is subjected to hydrophobic treatment (using Aquapel) and the
upper surface to hydrophilic treatment (using polyacrylamide coating) to enhance wetting by the respective
fluid phases. A fluorinated oil (HFE-7500 with surfactant E2K0660) forms the oil-phase, and the active MT
suspension forms the water-phase. We obtained purified tubulin monomers and kinesin–streptavidin motor
protein complexes from the Dogic Group at Brandeis University. The polymerization of tubulin to
MTs is performed in our lab before mixing with other biomaterials as per the protocols described in previous
works. The final active mix has 20% MTs by volume aided with 144μM ATP. The entire flow
cell is sealed by epoxy resin and centrifuged at 1000 RPM to accelerate the depletion mechanism to the
interface.

We use confocal fluorescence microscopy for visualization. The MTs are labeled with AlexaFlour 647 dye
and illuminated at 633 nm; the excitation and emission peaks are at 651 nm and 667 nm, respectively. After
sample preparation and centrifugation, we wait for 15-20 minutes to allow for uniform depletion, and then
image at a constant framerate till the activity ceases. Typically, the MTs stay active for 6+ hours. Imaging
is done using 10× and 20× objectives to focus on regions with area on the order of mm2, away from the
edges of the flow cell. The imaging process results in a time series of 8-bit grayscale images, which are stored
as the raw data.

For more information, see "Physically-informed data-driven modeling of active nematics" by Golden et al.

Transcripts of expert interviews with writing center directors in the USA in 2012

This document contains transcripts of interviews with 16 writing center directors in different writing centers in the USA, conducted in 2012. The overall research question for the interviews was how writing center directors deal with challenges in writing center work and how they conduct institutional work for their writing centers.

The interviews belong to the habilitation thesis “Strategien für die Institutionalisierung von Schreibzentren an Hochschulen. Eine qualitative Analyse der Institutionalisierungsarbeit von Leitungspersonen in Schreibzentren“, as proposed to the Fakultätsrat der Kultur-, Sozial- und Bildungswissenschaftlichen Fakultät of the Humboldt University Berlin, April 1st 2016. The study has been accepted as habilitation by the Fakultätsrat at February 15th 2017.

The results of the study will be published as open access publication (e-book) and in print by W.Bertelsmann Verlag (wbv) Bielefeld in October 2017. The study contains a description of demographic details and other details of the interviews and explains the methodology, which clarifies why the interview transcripts eventually change to part-transcriptions due to theoretical saturation.

The data analysis methods employed in this study were robust, fixed effects, random effects, and ordinary least square regression. These methods are one of the regression solution approaches that may be used with a lot of flexibility in research that combines thoughts, ideas, and facts. The first study found that the audit committee had an effect on sustainability, whereas the second found that the board of directors has no effect. Due to the third and fourth conclusions of the role of activities, the audit committee and board of directors are less strong on sustainability.

Keywords : Activity; Board of Directors; Sustainability; Audit Committee; Stata

JEL Classification: G32, G02, M1, G34, Z1

Research Education: Neurology Resident EEG Education: A Survey of US Neurology Residency Program Directors

Objective: To better understand the EEG education provided to adult neurology residents by surveying program directors (PDs) of adult neurology residency programs in the US.

Methods: An online survey focused on characteristics of neurology residency programs and their EEG teaching systems was distributed to the 161 adult neurology residency PDs listed in the ACGME website at the time of the study.

Results: Forty-seven (29%) out of the 161 PDs completed the survey – most of the participating programs (89%) were academic. The mean number of 1-month EEG rotation(s) required to graduate was 1.7 (range 0-4, median 1.75). EEG rotations involved the inpatient and outpatient setting in 91% and 70% of programs, respectively. The average number of EEGs read during a typical EEG rotation varied from more than 40, in about one-third of programs, to 0-10, in about 14% of programs. There was significant variability in the requirements for successful completion of EEG rotations, and most PDs (64%) reported not utilizing objective measures to assess EEG milestones. The most commonly used educational methods were didactics throughout the year (95%) and EEG teaching during EEG rotations (93%). The most commonly reported barriers to EEG education were insufficient EEG exposure (32%) and ineffective didactics (11%); possible solutions are summarized in table 1.

Conclusion: Our study identified a lack of consistency in teaching and evaluating residents during residency and presented EEG education barriers alongside possible solutions. We encourage PDs across the country to re-evaluate their EEG teaching systems in order to optimize EEG education.
