Elk hair trace minerals and treponeme-associated hoof disease surveillance metadata in the US Pacific Northwest

<p>This is the publicly accessible dataset reporting concentrations of thirteen analyzed minerals from hair using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and relevant metadata from treponeme-associated hoof disease in Pacific Northwest elk. A Twitter Dataset for Spatial Infectious Disease Surveillance

<p>Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease which infects millions of people every year, specially in developing countries. Some of the main challenges facing the disease are reporting risk indicators and rapidly detecting outbreaks. Traditional surveillance systems rely on passive reporting from health-care facilities, often ignoring human mobility and locating each individual by their home address. Yet, geolocated data are becoming commonplace in social media, which is widely used as means to discuss a large variety of health topics, including the users&#39; health status. In this dataset paper, we make available two large collections of dengue related labeled Twitter data. One is a set of tweets available through the Streaming API using the keywords dengue and aedes from 2010 to 2016. The other is the set of all geolocated tweets in Brazil during the year of 2015 (available also through the Streaming API). We detail the process of collecting and labeling each tweet containing keywords related to dengue in one of 5 categories: personal experience, information, opinion, campaign, and joke. This dataset can be useful for the development of models for spatial disease surveillance, but also scenarios such as understanding health-related content in a language other than English, and studying human mobility.</p>

Data from: Multisectoral approach in zoonotic disease surveillance

<p>Zoonoses are naturally transmissible between humans and animals. Globally, they account for more than 60% of human infections, 75% of emerging infections, 2.7 million human deaths, and 10% of the total DALYs lost yearly in Africa. In the last three decades, Kenya has had sporadic outbreaks of zoonoses. To increase the speed of reporting and efficiencies in detection and control, a multi-sectoral collaboration in zoonotic disease surveillance (MZDS) between human and animal health workers is essential. In an effort, Zoonotic disease unit (ZDU) in Kenya has been established at national and county levels. A cross sectional study was carried out to determine the level of utilization of multisectoral collaboration and its associated determinants in zoonotic disease surveillance among animal and human healthcare workers in Nakuru County. Quantitative data was gathered from 102 participants and quantitative data from 5 key informants. To test for significant differences, Chi-square and independent t-test were used. MZDS utilization level was 16% and the factors associated with higher utilization include; knowing what MZDS entails, education level, sector affiliation, trainings, supportive infrastructure and data storage. Lack of financing and poor coordination are hindrances to MZDS. In conclusion, there is need to finance MZDS activities, strengthen coordination mechanisms, carry out more sensitization and trainings among animal and human healthcare.</p>

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>Fatty liver disease is a serious complication of childhood obesity. Calorie-restricted regimen&nbsp;(RCR) is one of the e ective therapy for this condition. Aim of the study was to evaluate the effect&nbsp;of lycopene-rich tomato sauce with oregano and basil extracts in obese children with fatty liver on&nbsp;RCR. 61 obese children with fatty liver were enrolled, 52 completed the study. A randomized cross&nbsp;over clinical trial was performed. Participants were assigned to RCR alone or with a supplement of&nbsp;lycopene-rich tomato juice for 60 days; subsequently, the groups were switched to the alternative&nbsp;regimen for the next 60 days. Reduction in BMI, HOMA-IR, cholesterol, triglycerides, liver size,&nbsp;and steatosis was more profound in tomato-supplemented group. Leptin decreased in both groups&nbsp;whereas adiponectin raised only after tomato supplementation. RCR is associated with the impaired&nbsp;engagement of T-cells glycolysis and proliferation, tomato-supplementation resulted in glycolytic&nbsp;metabolic activation of T-cells. Tomato juice ameliorates glucose and lipid metabolism in obese&nbsp;children, improve oxidative and inflammatory state and modulates the mitochondrial metabolism&nbsp;of T-cells contributing to a maintenance of a proper immune surveillance in children, impaired by&nbsp;RCR. Diagnosis of prion diseases by RT-QuIC results in improved surveillance

<p><span><u>Objective:</u>  We present the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center's (NPDPSC) experience using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) real time quaking induced conversion (RT-QuIC) as a diagnostic test, examine factors associated with false negative RT-QuIC results, and investigate RT-QuIC's impact on prion disease surveillance. </span></p> <p> </p> <p><span><u>Methods:</u>  Between May 2015-April 2018, the NPDPSC received 10,498 CSF specimens that were included in the study.   Sensitivity and specificity analyses were performed using 567 autopsy verified cases.  Prion disease type, demographic characteristics, specimen color, and time variables were examined for association with RT-QuIC results.  The effect of including positive RT-QuIC cases in prion disease surveillance was examined.</span></p> <p> </p> <p><span><u>Results:</u> The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of RT-QuIC across all prion diseases was 90.3% and 98.5%, respectively.  Diagnostic sensitivity was lower for fatal familial insomnia, Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease, sporadic fatal insomnia, variably protease sensitive prionopathy, and the VV1 and MM2 subtypes of sCJD.  Individuals with prion disease and negative RT-QuIC results were younger, had elevated tau levels, and non-elevated 14-3-3 levels compared to RT-QuIC positive cases. Sensitivity was high throughout the disease course.  Some cases that initially tested RT-QuIC negative had a subsequent specimen test positive.  Including positive RT-QuIC cases in surveillance statistics increased laboratory-based case ascertainment of prion disease by 90% over autopsy alone. </span></p> <p> </p> <p><span><u>Conclusions:</u> RT-QuIC has high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing prion diseases.  Sensitivity limitations are associated with prion disease type, age, and related CSF diagnostic results. RT-QuIC greatly improves laboratory-based prion disease ascertainment for surveillance purposes.  </span></p> <p> </p> <p><span><u>Classification of Evidence:</u>  This study provides Class III evidence that 2<sup>nd</sup> generation real time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) identifies prion disease with sensitivity of 90.3% and specificity of 98.5%, among patients being screened for these diseases due to concerning symptoms.  </span></p>

Data from: Avian disease surveillance on the island of San Cristóbal, Galápagos.

<p>Endemic island species face unprecedented threats, with many populations in decline or at risk of extinction. One important threat is the introduction of novel and potentially devastating diseases, made more pressing due to accelerating global connectivity, urban development, and climatic changes. In the Galápagos archipelago two important wildlife diseases: avian pox (<i>Avipoxvirus spp.</i>) and avian malaria (<i>Plasmodium spp.</i> and related Haemosporidia) challenge endemic species. San Cristóbal island has seen a paucity of disease surveillance in avian populations, despite the island's connectedness to the continent and the wider archipelago. To survey prevalence and better understand the dynamics of these two diseases on San Cristóbal, we captured 1,207 birds of 11 species on the island between 2016 and 2020. Study sites included urban and rural lowland localities as well as rural highland sites in 2019. Of 995 blood samples screened for avian haemosporidia none tested positive for infection. In contrast, evidence of past and active pox infection was observed in 97 birds and identified as strains Gal1 and Gal2. Active pox prevalence differed significantly with contemporary climatic conditions, being highest during El Niño events (~11% in 2016 and in 2019 versus &lt;1% in the La Niña year of 2018). Pox prevalence was also higher at urban sites than rural (11% to 4%, in 2019) and prevalence varied between host species, ranging from 12% in Medium Ground Finches (<i>Geospiza fortis</i>)<i> </i>to 4% in Yellow Warblers (<i>Setophaga petechial aureola</i>). In the most common infected species (Small Ground Finch: <i>Geospiza fuliginosa</i>), birds recovered from pox had significantly longer wings, which may suggest a selective cost to infection. These results illustrate the threat future climate changes and urbanization may present in influencing disease dynamics in the Galápagos, while also highlighting unknowns regarding species-specific susceptibilities to avian pox and the transmission dynamics facilitating outbreaks within these iconic species.</p>

Synoptic table for surveillance scenarios for lumpy skin disease

<p>The Standing Group of Experts on lumpy skin disease (LSD) for South-East Europe under the GF-TADs umbrella recommended that all countries in South-East Europe, affected or at risk for LSD, should collaborate within the GF-TADs to draft a regional roadmap on an LSD exit strategy from 2018 onwards. This recommendation has triggered a mandate to EFSA in which it is asked to&nbsp;assess the effectiveness of different surveillance systems with different objectives, i.e. early detection or demonstration of freedom from disease, in the following contexts:</p> <p>(a) in areas or countries at risk of LSD, where no LSD outbreaks have occurred and LSD vaccination was never carried out;</p> <p>(b) in areas or countries at risk of LSD, where no LSD outbreaks have occurred and where LSD vaccination is carried out;</p> <p>(c) in areas where no LSD outbreaks have occurred and LSD preventive vaccination was carried out, and then stopped;</p> <p>(d) in areas where LSD outbreaks have been confirmed, and vaccination is stopped.</p> <p>For planning surveillance several elements should be considered: the objectives and related design prevalence, the epidemiological situation, the immunological status of the host population, the geographical area and the season, the type of surveillance (active or passive), the diagnostic methods including clinical detection (considered the most effective method for early detection of LSD), the target population, the sample size and frequency. Here a synoptic table is presented where each of these elements are discussed for each of the four scenarios given above.</p>

Literature search on worldwide surveillance systems targeting transboundary zoonotic and emerging diseases

<p>Surveillance systems for zoonotic and transboundary emerging pathogens that are structured following the holistic principles of joint work efforts from the human health, animal health and environmental health sectors are reviewed to provide a summary of one-health based surveillance systems existing worldwide. A systematic search of available literature was undertaken across various biomedical and scientific literature databases (from 2000 to 2022) and were selected using inclusion/exclusion criteria to filter references presenting systematic surveillance systems applicable to transmissible, transboundary, and zoonotic diseases operating under the One Health approach. A standardized data model and vocabulary were used to extract and classify key information to characterize target surveillance systems. 996 studies were obtained after research (589 after duplicates&rsquo; elimination) for inclusion in this review and information was extracted using a data model, which were reduced to 79 items once inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. From these articles, 80 additional items were found within references.</p>

Data from: Application of a Bayesian weighted surveillance approach for detecting chronic wasting disease in white-tailed deer

SUMMARY 1. Surveillance is critical for the early detection of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, and weighted surveillance uses heterogeneity in risk of infection to increase the sampling efficiency. 2. We apply a Bayesian approach to estimate weights for 16 surveillance classes of white-tailed deer in Wisconsin, USA, relative to hunter-harvested yearling males. We use these weights to conduct a surveillance program for detecting chronic wasting disease (CWD) in white-tailed deer at Shenandoah National Park (SHEN) in Virginia, USA. 3. Generally, for surveillance, risk of infection increased with age and was greater in males. Clinical suspect deer had the highest risk with weight estimates of 33.33 and 9.09, for community reported and hunter reported suspect deer, respectively, while fawns had the lowest risk with an estimated weight of 0.001. 4. We used surveillance weights for Wisconsin deer to determine sampling effort required to detect a CWD-positive case in SHEN if prevalence in yearling males ≥0.025. The sampling required to detect CWD was 37–91 adult deer, depending on the adult male:female ratio in the surveillance stream. We collected rectal biopsies from 49 and 21 adult female and male deer, respectively, and 10 additional samples from vehicle-killed deer. CWD was not detected and we concluded with 95% probability that prevalence in the reference population (yearling males) was between 0.0 to 3.6%. 5. Synthesis and applications. Our approach allows managers to estimate relative surveillance weights for different host classes and quantify limits of disease detection in real time when only a sample of animals from a population can be tested, resulting in considerable cost savings for agencies performing wildlife disease detection surveillance. Additionally, it provides a rigorous means of estimating prevalence limits when a disease/pathogen is not detected in a sample set, and is generalizable to other wildlife, domestic animal, and human disease systems which can be characterized by surveillance classes with heterogeneous probability of infection. This methodology is also extendable to other disciplines such as invasive species, environmental toxicology, and generally any ecological question seeking to efficiently use scarce financial and human resources to maximize the detection probability of a rare event.
