Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorbance from lagoon, ocean, and river sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2021-ongoing

Multiple water types (river, lagoon, ocean) from the North Slope of Alaska and nearshore Beaufort Sea are sampled seasonally by the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program to investigate biogeochemical linkages between terrestrial, lagoon, and open ocean ecosystems. Water samples from multiple depths are collected during full ice cover (April), ice break-up (mid-June to early July), and open water (late July and August) periods, filtered, and analyzed for light absorption spectra within 24 hours of collection. Wavelength-specific light absorption coefficients are reported between 250 and 600 nanometers. The data is organized in "long" or "tidy" format, with columns of station, date, wavelength, and absorption. Please see included MakeColumnsAsWavelengths.R, MakeColumnsAsDates.R, and ReshapeDataInExcel.txt for some common ways to reorganize the table for further CDOM analysis. In 2022, data from 2019 were removed due to quality issues (please see revision 1 of this dataset for 2019 CDOM values). For users who may have used 2019 data from this dataset, there are additional files to inform decisions going forward. "BLE_LTER_CDOM_2019_sample_flags.csv" lists which 2019 samples are entirely unreliable, versus usable with caution. "BLE_LTER_CDOM_2021_blank_mean_sd_absorptions.csv" lists mean and standard deviations at each wavelength from all blanks taken in 2021; this is meant to give info on the instruments used and will not be updated further. Please see the methods section for more information on 2019 data.

Composition and biodegradability of dissolved organic matter in supra-permafrost groundwater and surface waters near Simpson Lagoon, Alaska

Supra-permafrost groundwater (SPGW) is an important source of terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) to the Arctic Ocean, yet few studies have investigated the quality or characteristics of this DOM. We sampled fresh SPGW, run-off, and rivers near Simpson Lagoon, Alaska during spring ice break-up (mid-June), summer open water (late July), and fall freeze-up (late September - early October). We measured dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in these samples and analyzed the composition of DOM using high-resolution mass spectrometry (Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry; FT-ICR MS). To measure biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC), we conducted an aerobic incubation experiment following the methods suggested by Vonk et al. (2015). Briefly, water samples were incubated at 20C for 28 days to measure DOC loss due to remineralization by in-situ microbial communities.

Daily summer riverine and groundwater pCO2, dissolved oxygen, and ecosystem metabolism from sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2019-2022

Three riverine systems near Utqiaġvik, Alaska, are sampled regularly by the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program in order to investigate biogeochemical linkages between terrestrial, lagoon, and open ocean ecosystems. Sampling includes one intermediate river, Avak Creek, and two smaller streams: the Mayoeak River (thermokarst stream) and a beaded stream. In 2019, 2021, and 2022, we performed additional sampling at these core program sites, with continuous monitoring of the streams between late June and August. Continuous measurements included riverine discharge, pCO₂, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ecosystem production, along with periodic grab samples of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). In 2022, there was also monitoring of groundwater wells at the two streams, capturing continuous hydraulic head and groundwater pCO₂, in addition to grab samples for DOC. Daily averages of continuous data and DOC laboratory results are presented for surface water and groundwater. This dataset is not part of the BLE Core Program and is not currently planned as an ongoing effort.

Ramped Pyrolysis Oxidation (RPO) coupled radiocarbon (14C-DOC) and stable carbon (13C-DOC), high-resolution molecular composition (FT-ICR MS), and biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) of groundwater, river water, and lagoon water in northeast Alaska, 2017

Supra-permafrost groundwater (SPGW), river water, and lagoon water were sampled near Kaktovik, AK to assess the reactivity and origin of dissolved organic matter (DOM) across interconnected hydrologic systems during late summer. Water samples were collected on August 17th 2017 from SPGW along the beach of Jago Lagoon (Jago GW), surface water from the Jago River’s main channel above tidal influence (Jago R), and from the water column of Kaktovik Lagoon at 2–3 m depth (KA LW). Measurements were made from grab samples for river and lagoon water, and from a composite sample for SPGW gathered from 10 individual shoreline locations. Data include dissolved organic carbon concentration (DOC, mg C L-1), Ramped Pyrolysis Oxidation (RPO) derived fraction compositions of 13C-DOC (δ13C ‰), 14C-DOC (in fraction modern), and method/instrumental error in the 14C and 13C results, and Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) molecular composition and summarized compound classes. Biodegradable DOC (BDOC) bottle experiments were performed using all three sample types, where DOC concentration was subsequently measured at 2, 7, 14, and 28 days. FT-ICR MS composition was subsequently measured at the 28-day timepoint to track changes in molecular formulae and compound class relative abundance following biodegradation. Data from RPO serial thermal oxidation include temperature and normalized CO2 profiles for each background sample. Thermal-oxidation profiles of CO2 were transformed into non-parametric activation energy (E) distributions using an inverse model. Model output includes C mass of oxidized CO2 (µg C), Tmax (K), Emax (kJ mol-1), Emean (kJ mol-1), Estd (kJ mol-1), and p(0,E)max of user-defined sample fractions. FT-ICR MS results include a summary table of the relative abundance of compound classes (e.g., unsaturated phenolic, polyphenolic, aliphatic, condensed aromatics, peptide-like) and elemental groupings (e.g., CHO-type, CHON-type, CHOS-type, CHON

Correction Factors for Dissolved Organic Carbon Extracted from Soil in New England 2012-2013

Oxidizable dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is regularly measured in environmental samples using a colorimetric method with Mn(III)-pyrophosphate as the oxidizing agent. It is simpler to use and has a much higher throughput than the commonly used dichromate oxidation and combustion methods. Here, we demonstrate that the method often leads to an underestimation or overestimation of the concentration of common organic compounds in solutions. To our knowledge, no published study has taken this fact into account when analyzing DOC data. Hence, we compared Mn(III)-pyrophosphate-based results with measurements performed with a total organic carbon combustion analyzer for samples of organic and mineral soil horizons of two temperate deciduous forests (Harvard Forest, Hubbard Brook), of organic soil horizon of a primary growth hemlock stand (Harvard Forest), and of a peatland (Caribou Bog) located in New England, USA. The Mn(III)-pyrophosphate method consistently underestimated DOC concentration in soil extracts. We present correction factors for the different types of soil studied. By employing correction factors, we find the method can be an inexpensive, accurate, and high throughput tool to measure DOC in environmental samples.

Dissolved oxygen data for the Green Lake 4 buoy, 2018 - ongoing.

High-resolution water quality data are fundamental to observing rapid ecological responses to meteorology, climate, and other disturbance events. Here we describe the deployment of a single buoy line with multiple sensors at fixed-depths from a subsurface float in the water-column of Green Lake 4 (GL4). Sensors on the buoy collect data in both summer and winter, thereby providing valuable insights into lake characteristics beyond our standard sampling period, including key transitional periods such as ice formation and ice break-up.

PIE LTER dissolved nutrient and particulate concentrations of freshwater inputs to the Plum Island estuarine system, Massachusetts, taken approximately monthly.

Multi-year data of water chemistry including nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments, was determined from monthly grab samples taken at watershed inputs to the Plum Island Sound Estuary. Sampling sites were the Ipswich River (Sylvania Dam, Ipswich, MA), Parker River Dam (Central St, Newbury, MA), Egypt River (Ipswich, MA) Mill River (Newbury, MA), Muddy Run (Ipswich, MA), Little River (Newbury, MA). These nutrient concentrations are then used in conjunction with USGS discharge data (recorded at gages in the Parker River at Byfield, MA and the Ipswich River at Ipswich, MA) to calculate annual nutrient loading to the Plum Island Sound Estuary, coming over each dam. Annual yield is also calculated for both dams. Refer to file WAT-VA-Load for loading data.

Time series of high-frequency sensor data measuring water temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, specific conductance, total dissolved solids, chlorophyll a, phycocyanin, turbidity, and fluorescent dissolved organic matter at discrete depths in Carvins Cove Reservoir, Virginia, USA in 2020-2025

We monitored water quality in Carvins Cove Reservoir (Roanoke, Virginia, USA; 37.3697 -79.958) with high-frequency (10-minute) sensors in 2020-2025. Carvins Cove Reservoir is owned and managed by the Western Virginia Water Authority as a primary drinking water source. This data package consists of datasets from two separate deployments. First, from July 2020 - August 2021, depth profiles of water temperature were measured on 1-meter intervals using HOBO temperature pendant loggers deployed from 0.1 m below the surface of the reservoir to 10 m depth, and also at 15 and 20 m depth. Additionally, water temperature was measured in the Sawmill Branch inflow at 0.5 m depth using HOBO temperature pendant loggers. Second, from 9 April 2021 - 31 December 2025, depth profiles of water temperature were measured on 1-meter intervals from 0.1 m below the surface of the reservoir to 11 m depth and additionally at 15 and 19 m. A YSI EXO2 sonde measured water temperature, conductivity, specific conductance, chlorophyll a, phycocyanin, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, and fluorescent dissolved organic matter at ~1.5 m depth. A YSI EXO3 sonde measured water temperature, conductivity, specific conductance, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, and fluorescent dissolved organic matter at ~9 m depth, which corresponds to the depth of a water outtake valve. The thermistors, EXO3 sonde, and pressure sensor were deployed at stationary, fixed elevations (referred to as positions) deployed off of the dam near the water outtake valves. Due to variable water levels in the reservoir, the depths of these sensors varied over time. In contrast, the EXO2 was deployed on a buoy from 2021-2022 and remained at 1.5 m depth as the water level fluctuated. However, in 2023, the buoy disappeared in a storm, and after that the EXO2 was deployed at a stationary elevation as the water level fluctuated around the sensor. The EXO2 was redeployed on the buoy in 2024. The monitoring site's maximum de
