Dissolved greenhouse gas concentrations derived from the NEON dissolved gases in surface water data product (DP1.20097.001)
This dataset contains partial pressure and molar concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide in 34 streams, rivers, and lakes calculated from headspace equilibration samples collected by the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). All input data were collected by NEON and is available on the NEON data portal at https://data.neonscience.org. Specifically, in situ dissolved gas concentrations were calculated from the air and headspace mixing ratios provided by the NEON Dissolved gases in surface water data product (DP1.20097.001), adjusted for sample and water temperature (DP1.20097.001, DP1.20264.001, DP1.20053.001), barometric pressure (DP1.20097.001, DP1.00004.001), and alkalinity (DP1.20093.001). The final set of inputs is found in the file, input_file, and the processing scripts are available at https://github.com/kellyaho/NEON-GHG-processing. The file, output_file, contains the raw outputs from running the input_file through the processing scripts. There are three outputs for each gas for each sample, one for each of three different pre-equilibration headspace mixing ratios (paired atmospheric samples, loess smoothing of atmospheric samples, and site-specific median). The file, GHG_final, contains the final dataset. This GHG_final uses the outputs from output_file calculated with paired atmospheric samples, and substitutes 0.01 μatm, 0.001 μM, 0.001 μatm, and 0.001 μM for any negative instances of pCH4, [CH4], pN2O, and [N2O], respectively. See methods for more detail. Please cite the NEON data inputs (listed below), in addition to this dataset, when using the data. NEON is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and operated under cooperative agreement by Battelle. This material is based in part upon work supported by NSF through the NEON Program.
Concentrations of dissolved dimethyl sulfide (DMS), methanethiol and other trace gases in context of microbial communities from the temperate Atlantic to the Arctic Ocean
<p>This archive contains bioinformatic code and data files to reproduce bacterial analyses from Gros et al. (<em>Biogeosciences; </em>https://doi.org/10.5194/bg-2022-150). In this study, seawater samples collected along an Atlantic-Arctic transect (55-80°N) were evaluated for microbial community composition and trace gas concentrations. Microbes were sampled underway using "AUTOFIM" automatic filtration; and bacterial communities amplicon-sequenced using 16S rRNA gene primers. Raw sequence data is available at ENA under BioProject PRJEB50492.</p> <p>The archive contains:<br> - Rmarkdown for primer-clipping, ASV generation and taxonomy assignment: 1_DADA.Rmd<br> - Rscript for ASV and metadata processing; alpha-diversity calculations: 2_DataLoad.R<br> - Rscript for generation of manuscript figures: 3_Results.R<br> - Rscript for generation of supplementary figures: 4_Supplement.R<br> - Metadata and environmental parameters as .txt files</p>
Concentrations of dissolved gases at a methane seep in the deep northern Gulf of Mexico measured with an in situ mass spectrometer (ISMS)
<p>Concentrations of dissolved methane, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and oxygen in a <em>Bathymodiolus</em> mussel bed at a methane seep in the deep northern Gulf of Mexico. The data were collected with an in situ mass spectrometer (ISMS) on May 6, 2015, during a research cruise with RV Nautilus, dive H1423. The location was site MC853, at 28.12835 (lat), -89.14100 (long), in 1080 m water depth. At this site the two mussel species <em>Bathymodiolus brooksi</em> and <em>B. childressi</em> were collected. ISMS measurements were performed before and after the removal of animals from the mussel bed.</p>
Carbon Nanotube-Based Chemiresistive Sensor Array for Dissolved Gases
<p>Abstract: Dissolved gases such as oxygen (DO) and ammonia (dNH3) are among the most consequential parameters for water quality assessment. Since the concentrations of DO and dNH3 are interdependent through the nitrogen cycle, simultaneous monitoring can be useful in many applications. For example, in wastewater treatment, aeration baths are used to adjust the rate of ammonia removal by the bioactive sludge. Here, we have developed a sensing array which can monitor dissolved molecular oxygen (DO) and dissolved un-ionized ammonia (dNH3) continuously and simultaneously. This was achieved by functionalizing two sensors made from single- walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films with two different molecules; phenyl-capped aniline tetramer (PCAT), and iron phthalocyanine (II) (FePc). It was found that the FePc-doped SWCNT (FePc@SWCNT) sensor demonstrated good sensitivity and selectivity to DO, compared to dNH3. Conversely, we found that the PCAT-doped SWCNT (PCAT@SWCNT) demonstrates greater sensitivity to ammonia. Investigating the effect of different PCAT salts as dopant, we describe the following series of sensor responses to ammonia: Chloride < Crotonate < Fumarate. Additionally, we coated our sensors with PDMS, which is selectively permeable to gases, over ionic species. Finally, using principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square discriminant analysis, it was possible to discriminate between responses to DO and dNH3, with 100% accuracy. As a result, here, we have developed a compelling proof-of-concept for the use of a single sensing substrate, doped with molecules with distinct mechanisms of interaction with two different analytes, to simultaneously monitor concentrations of two dissolved gases, namely DO and dNH3. </p> <p> </p> <p>This repository contains dataset and code used in chemometric analysis.</p> <p>Dataset contained in dataset folder. Within the array_exp.csv file, "sensor366" represents the current data for a PCAT@SWCNT Fumarate sensor; "sensor353" represents a FePc@SWCNT sensor. The dO meter is a polarographic probe. Times for the ammonia additions and concentrations can be found in the Rmarkdown script.</p> <p>In the root directory, the renv.lock file can be found with required packages. ABoVE: Seasonal Dissolved Gases and Isotopes in Arctic Alaska Rivers
This dataset provides dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) concentrations alongside their stable and radiocarbon isotopic compositions within the Arctic Sagavanirktok and Kuparuk River watersheds located on the North Slope of Alaska. The data were collected during the spring, fall, and summer seasons in 2022. In field separation of the bulk gaseous components (N2, CO2, and CH4) from the liquid phase was achieved using a degassing membrane contactor. Laboratory isotopic analyses were conducted at the W. M. Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometer facility at UC Irvine. This collection aims to provide insights into the seasonal dynamics of greenhouse gas emissions in these critical Arctic environments, thereby contributing valuable information for climate change research and monitoring programs. The data are provided in comma separated values (CSV) format.
BlueFlux: Dissolved Carbon and Greenhouse Gases
This dataset provides dissolved carbon (dissolved inorganic carbon and dissolved organic carbon), greenhouse gases, dissolved organic matter optical, and hydrological (water temperature, pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen) data collected from the Shark and Harney tidal rivers in the Everglades, Florida, USA. The data were collected as part of the NASA Carbon Monitoring System (CMS) BlueFlux field campaigns over the 2022 wet season (October 2022) and 2023 dry season (March 2023). Data includes single-collection samples collected from sites along both rivers and samples collected by an autosampler at one site over multiple tidal cycles. The data are provided in comma-separated values (.csv) format.
