Assessment of dissolved iron in Iowa lakes

This study assessed the abundance of dissolved iron (DFe) in Iowa’s lakes. The micronutrient iron has been noted to play a crucial role in regulating phytoplankton growth, however most studies have focused on large lakes with persistent phytoplankton blooms that are known to undergo iron limitation, such as Lake Erie. There are few datasets of DFe in lakes, especially those that are smaller and susceptible to phytoplankton blooms. In order to assess the spatial distribution of DFe in lakes throughout Iowa, this study obtained DFe measurements over a suite of recreational lakes over a summer season in 2018. Weekly monitoring of DFe (for 15 weeks) was conducted to assess temporal trends.

Measurements, from CCE LTER process cruises in the California Current region, of dissolved inorganic concentrations of nutrient iron and of iron limitation at selected stations and depths, 2006 - 2021 (ongoing).

Measurements are made of dissolved iron, total iron and the potential for phytoplankton iron limitation on CCE LTER Process cruises (since 2006, ongoing) in coastal transition zones of the southern California Current System. This is a weak upwelling regime that is relatively low in nutrients and chlorophyll. Changes in phytoplankton (Chla response to Fe+) and nutrient parameters upon iron addition are also investigated.

Measurements, from CCE LTER process cruises in the California Current region, of total dissolvable inorganic concentrations of the nutrient iron, 2017 - (ongoing).

Seawater profiles or discrete samples for total dissolvable iron (TDFe) analysis are collected with the trace metal rosette or GO-FLO bottles, respectively, in stations located within the CCE LTER region in the California Current System. The total dissolvable iron concentration is obtained by collecting unfiltered seawater samples in 250 mL LDPE bottles and storing them at pH 1.8 for 6 months or more. The acidified seawater sample is then filtered using acid cleaned 0.4 um PES membrane Titan 3 syringe filters and determined by flow injection chemiluminescent (FI-CL) analysis at Scripps Insitution of Oceanography since 2017 (ongoing).

Oxygen availability regulates the quality of soil dissolved organic matter by mediating microbial metabolism and iron oxidation

<p>Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a vital role in biogeochemical processes and in determining the responses of soil organic matter (SOM) to global change. Although the quantity of soil DOM has been inventoried across diverse spatio-temporal scales, the underlying mechanisms accounting for variability in DOM dynamics remain unclear, especially in upland ecosystems. Here, a gradient of SOM storage across twelve croplands in northeast China was used to understand links between DOM dynamics, microbial metabolism, and abiotic conditions. We assessed the composition, biodegradability and key biodegradable components of DOM. In addition, SOM and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) composition, soil enzyme activities, oxygen availability, soil texture, iron (Fe), Fe-bound organic matter and nutrient concentrations were quantified to clarify the drivers of DOM quality (composition and biodegradability). The proportion of biodegradable DOM increased exponentially with decreasing initial DOM concentration due to larger fractions of depolymerized DOM that was rich in small-molecular phenols and proteinaceous components. Unexpectedly, the composition of DOM was decoupled from that of SOM or MAOM, but significantly related to enzymatic properties. These results indicate that microbial metabolism exhibited a dominant role in DOM generation. As DOM concentration declined, increased soil oxygen availability regulated DOM composition and enhanced its biodegradability mainly through mediating microbial metabolism and Fe oxidation. The oxygen-induced oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) removed complex DOM compounds with large molecular weight. Moreover, increased oxygen availability stimulated oxidase-catalyzed depolymerization of aromatic substances, and promoted production of protein-like DOM components due to lower enzymatic C/N acquisition ratio. As global changes in temperature and moisture will have large impacts on soil oxygen availability, the role of oxygen in regulating DOM dynamics highlights the importance of integrating soil oxygen supply with microbial metabolism and Fe redox status to improve model predictions of soil carbon under climate change.</p>

Measurements of dissolved inorganic concentrations of nutrient iron and of iron limitation at selected stations and depths from CalCOFI cruises in the California Current System, Nov. 2002 - July 2004 (completed)

Measurements were made of iron (Fe) and the potential for phytoplankton iron limitation on CalCOFI survey cruises (2002-2004) in coastal transition zones of the southern California Current System. This is a weak upwelling regime that is relatively low in nutrients and chlorophyll. The majority of seawater samples from the mixed layer were collected using a pole sampler, others were collected using a trace metal clean Teflon pump system. Profiles for dissolved Fe analysis were collected using GO Flo bottles attached to a synthetic line and the seawater samples were filtered under ultra-pure conditions. Dissolved Fe was measured using an FeLume flow injection analysis system. Changes in phytoplankton (Chla response to Fe+) and nutrient parameters upon iron addition were also investigated.

Measured and derived parameters on dissolved thorium and iron in the northern Gulf of Mexico

<p>The raw seawater thorium isotope data used in this study were reported at BCO-DMO (<a href="https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/819622">https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/819622</a>; <a href="https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/819674">https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/819674</a>). This supplement was provided for data users to easily access parameters derived from measured parameters. For instance, dissolved Th-232 and Th-230 are measured directly but they are combined to calculate further parameters such as Th-232 flux and Th residence time, as described in our manuscripts. This data is associated with a manuscript under consideration of publication, entitled &quot;Towards Constraining Sources of Lithogenic Metals in the Northern Gulf of Mexico&quot; at the time of publishing this dataset.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Dissolved iron elution from mangrove ecosystem associated with polyphenols and a herbivorous snail

Interest in the systems supplying dissolved forms of iron to the sea from upland-forests and wetlands has increased because iron is abundant on land but has low bioavailability in seawater. This can be a limiting factor for the growth of marine phytoplankton. Organic complex iron, a typical form of iron dissolved in seawater, is supplied to the ocean through rivers from forest and wetland soils. As a related study, we focus on mangrove ecosystems located at the boundary between the land and sea and on polyphenols present in leaves as ligands for the formation of iron complexes. When mangrove leaf litter falls on the wet forest floor, phenolic compounds leach out from the leaves and might solubilize insoluble iron in the sediments (i.e., iron complexation). However, the reaction mechanism is not simple in the field, and it might be made more complex by tidal currents and intervention by crabs and snails, which consume mangrove leaf litter. In the present study, we focused on a detritivorous snail, Terebralia palustris, as a facilitator of iron solubilization associated with phenolic compounds, and examined how the snail contribute to iron solubilization processes. Our results indicated that the amounts of phenolic compounds in mangrove sediments are strongly related to iron solubilization. Furthermore, the average dissolved iron and phenolic contents in sediments from areas inhabited by the snail were significantly higher than those of sediments where the snail was not present. We additionally report that the solubilization of iron was promoted when snail feces were added to mangrove sediments. In conclusion, we propose that iron solubilization in mangrove sediments is promoted by the interaction between i) iron in the sediment, ii) phenolic compounds derived from mangroves, and iii) the consumption of leaves and the deposition of feces by the snail.
