Time series of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide concentrations for Falling Creek Reservoir, Beaverdam Reservoir and Carvins Cove Reservoir in southwestern Virginia, USA during 2015-2025
Surface samples and depth profiles of carbon dioxide and methane concentrations were sampled from 2015 to 2025 in three drinking water reservoirs in southwestern Virginia, USA: Beaverdam Reservoir (Vinton, Virginia), Carvins Cove Reservoir (Roanoke, Virginia), and Falling Creek Reservoir (Vinton, Virginia). All three reservoirs are owned and operated by the Western Virginia Water Authority as primary or secondary drinking water sources for Roanoke, Virginia. The dataset consists of depth profiles of dissolved greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide, methane) samples measured at the deepest site of each reservoir adjacent to the dam. Additional surface samples were collected at a gauged weir on Falling Creek Reservoir's primary inflow tributary, from a wetland adjacent to Falling Creek Reservoir, and from the reservoir outflow. At Beaverdam Reservoir, additional samples were collected at three outflow sites below the dam and at the mid-reservoir outflow. Samples were collected approximately fortnightly from March-April, weekly from May-October, and monthly in November-February at Falling Creek Reservoir and Beaverdam Reservoir. Samples were collected twice in 2025 at Carvins Cove Reservoir. Additionally, upstream surface samples were taken at multiple tributaries in Carvins Cove Reservoir. In 2019, surface samples along the stream and reservoir continuum in both Falling Creek Reservoir and Beaverdam Reservoir were collected monthly during the summer stratified period. In 2025, littoral samples were collected from Falling Creek Reservoir monthly from June to October (see site descriptions file for geographic coordinates of sampling sites). A maintenance log and quality assurance/quality control analysis scripts accompany the data package.
Cascade Project at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Weekly dissolved methane profiles (2018, 2019, and 2024)
Weekly profiles of dissolved methane concentrations, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and light were measured during three summers (2018, 2019, and 2024) in two north temperate lakes. One of the lakes was experimentally enriched with nitrogen and phosphorus during two summers (2019 and 2024), and darkened using a blue dye in one summer (2024). The other lake was an unmanipulated reference. Using this series of whole-lake enrichment and shading experiments across three years with varying ice phenology, we assessed how eutrophication and ice cover affect within-year methane storage.
Methane concentrations in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) leachates from permafrost soils collected from the North Slope of Alaska in the summers of 2018 and 2019
Methane (CH4) concentrations were measured in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) leachates of permafrost soils collected from the frozen permafrost layer at five sites underlying tussock tundra or wet sedge vegetation on the North Slope of Alaska during the summers of 2018 and 2019.

PIE LTER Methane isotopes (13C and D) for methane in sediments and dissolved in surface water from four headwater streams in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Gas samples for methane isotopes were collected from four headwater streams. Benthic gas samples were collected by physcially distrubing the sediment and collecting ebullated gas. Dissolved gas samples were extracted from surface water. 13C and deuterium isotopes were analyzed. Relevant publications: A.L. Depth profiles of water column dissolved methane, density and biomass of zooplankton (specifically, Chaoborus spp.), and measurements of methane extracted from Chaoborus spp. during two sampling campaigns in 2016
Depth profiles of water column dissolved methane (CH4), density and biomass of zooplankton (specifically, Chaoborus spp.), and measurements of methane extracted from Chaoborus spp. were collected from Beaverdam Reservoir, Vinton, VA, USA during two, 24-hr intensive sampling campaigns in fall 2016 (3-4 August and 16-17 September). The sampling campaign was designed to test the hypothesis that Chaoborus spp. can transport CH4 from the hypolimnion to the epilimnion of lakes and reservoirs as they migrate to the surface waters from the benthos at night in search of zooplankton prey, and results of the project are published in Carey et al. 2018. During both sampling events, depth profiles of water column methane and Chaoborus spp. density were collected at noon, dusk, midnight, 2 a.m., dawn, and noon the following day at a 1 m resolution. In addition, during the September sampling event depth profiles were collected 1 hour prior to and after dusk. Methane gas was extracted from live Chaoborus individuals at every depth and time point immediately after collection via gentle centrifugation in distilled water following McGinnis et al. 2017. Radiocarbon content of carbon dioxide, methane, dissolved organic carbon and particulate organic carbon from the northern permafrost region and other studies
<p>The dataset includes 14C measurements of CO2, CH4, DOC and POC mostly from the northern permafrost region. Some other studies are included from sites not underlained by permafrost. The dataset focuses on 14C measurements of gaseous soil emissions and waterborne ecosystem C fluxes but the database also included C forms belowground, such as soil gases and pore water DOC. </p>
Dissolved methane in the Chukchi Sea during 2017-2020
<p>Methane (CH4) is one of the important greenhouse gases. CH4 dry mole fractions in the atmosphere have increased continuously since the onset of the industrial revolution, contributing to more than 20% of the anthropogenic radiative forcing in the lower atmosphere since 1750. In addition, the ice-covered parts of the Arctic are now known to be a reservoir of organic carbon, suggesting that the coastal areas in the Arctic may be a neglected but essential component of the global CH4 budget.</p> <p>Seawater samples for CH4 analysis were collected onboard R/V “Xuelong 1”, “Xuelong 2”, and “Xiangyanghong 3” during the 8-11th Chinese Arctic Research Expedition (CHINARE) to the Chukchi Sea during 2017-2020.</p> <p>1. Concentrations of dissolved gases at a methane seep in the deep northern Gulf of Mexico measured with an in situ mass spectrometer (ISMS)
<p>Concentrations of dissolved methane, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and oxygen in a <em>Bathymodiolus</em> mussel bed at a methane seep in the deep northern Gulf of Mexico. The data were collected with an in situ mass spectrometer (ISMS) on May 6, 2015, during a research cruise with RV Nautilus, dive H1423. The location was site MC853, at 28.12835 (lat), -89.14100 (long), in 1080 m water depth. At this site the two mussel species <em>Bathymodiolus brooksi</em> and <em>B. childressi</em> were collected. ISMS measurements were performed before and after the removal of animals from the mussel bed.</p>
Dissolved nitrous oxide and methane in Taiwan strait: Distribution, seasonal variation and emission
<p><span>The global ocean plays an important role in the overall budgets of nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4), especially in continental estuaries and shelf areas. To fill this gap in ocean area data, four cruises were conducted between 2021 and 2022, covering the spring, summer, and fall seasons, to study the spatial and seasonal characteristics of N2O and CH4 distributions and emissions in the Taiwan Strait (TWS). And we added readme file describing the quality control procedures to the Zenodo file to help people easily access the data.</span></p> <p> </p>
