Double-crested Cormorant (Nannopterum auritum) nesting colony and environmental data in Biscayne National Park, Florida, USA (2009-2024)

Double-crested Cormorant (DCCO) nesting data were collected from colonies in Biscayne National Park (BISC) by the South Florida/Caribbean Inventory and Monitoring Network as part of the Colonial Nesting Birds vital sign monitoring program. Nesting data collected from 2010 to 2023 are included in this dataset. Salinity, chlorophyll, and ammonia data were acquired from sites monitored in the Surface Water Quality Monitoring Program managed by the Miami-Dade County Division of Environmental Management’s Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER-DERM). Seagrass data were acquired from sites monitored by RER-DERM as a part of the Biscayne Bay Benthic Habitat Monitoring Program. Mangrove fish and epifauna data were acquired from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Integrated Biscayne Bay Ecological Assessment and Monitoring Project (IBBEAM). Environmental data (salinity, chlorophyll, ammonia, seagrass, mangrove fish, and epifauna) were manipulated in order to examine the relationship between DCCO nesting trends and the BISC ecosystem. This data package is completed. Code included is pertinent to the methods described in "Assessment of ecosystem health in Biscayne National Park, Florida according to Double-crested Cormorant (Nannopterum auritum) nesting trends" by Taylor et al. 2025, currently submitted to and under review by Ecological Indicators.

<p>Avian migrants are challenged by seasonal adverse climatic conditions and energetic costs of long-distance flying. Migratory birds may track or switch seasonal climatic niche between the breeding and non-breeding grounds. Satellite tracking enables avian ecologists to investigate seasonal climatic niche and circannual movement patterns of migratory birds. The Double-crested Cormorant (<em>Nannopterum auritum</em>, hereafter cormorant) wintering in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) migrate to the Northern Great Plains and Great Lakes and is of economic importance because of its impacts on aquaculture. We tested the climatic niche switching hypothesis that cormorants would switch climatic niche between summer and winter because of substantial differences in climate between the non-breeding grounds in the subtropical region and breeding grounds in northern temperate region. The ordination analysis of climatic niche overlap indicated that cormorants had separate seasonal climatic niche consisting of seasonal mean monthly minimum and maximum temperature, seasonal mean monthly precipitation, and seasonal mean wind speed. Despite non-overlapping summer and winter climatic niches, cormorants appeared to be subjected to similar wind speed between winter and summer habitats and were consistent with similar hourly flying speed between winter and summer. Therefore, substantial differences in temperature and precipitation may lead to the climatic niche switching of fish-eating cormorants, a dietary specialist, between the breeding and non-breeding grounds.   </p>

Data from: Tracking the history and ecological changes of rising double-crested cormorant populations using pond sediments from islands in eastern Lake Ontario

In the Laurentian Great Lakes region, the double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) has seen a thousand-fold population increase in recent decades. These large colonies of birds now often conflict with socioeconomic interests, particularly due to perceived competition with fisheries and the destruction of terrestrial vegetation in nesting habitats. Here we use dated sediment cores from ponds on islands in eastern Lake Ontario that receive waste inputs from dense colonies of cormorants and ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis) to chronicle the population rise of these species and assess their long-term ecological impacts. Modern water chemistry sampling from these sites reveals drastically elevated nutrient and major ion concentrations compared to reference ponds not influenced by waterbirds. Geochemical tracers in dated sediment cores, particularly δ15N and chlorophyll-a concentrations, track waterbird influences over time. Fossil diatom assemblages were dominated by species tolerant of hyper-eutrophic and polluted systems, which is in marked contrast to assemblages in reference sites. In addition to establishing long-term ecological impacts, this multi-proxy paleoecological approach can be used to determine whether islands of concern have been long-term nesting sites or were only recently colonized by cormorant or ring-billed gull populations across the Great Lakes, facilitating informed management decisions about controversial culling programs.
