Evidence of alliesthesia during a neighborhood thermal walk in a hot and dry city (Phoenix, Arizona)

Thermal comfort should be an integral part of urban design in the context of global warming and urbanization. The influence of built infrastructure on thermal perceptions of walking pedestrians is not well explored, but thermal walks that combine sensing technologies with simultaneous collection of user experiences is a promising research direction to shorten the gap. We examined the relationships between the built environment, heat perception, and behavioral coping mechanisms in one of the most heat vulnerable Phoenix neighborhoods. Using Phoenix as an example, where extremely hot summer temperatures are becoming a norm, can help to address heat challenges of other cities that are facing rising temperatures. This study is an experimental citizen science project in which participants were surveyed during a 1-hour walk around the neighborhood and recorded their experience in a field guide. Walkers wore GPS devices and microclimate measurements were taken to gain deeper insights on subjective heat perception and physical body heat accumulation during the walk. Results revealed the differences in heat perception across a variety of urban landscapes. Participants identified preferred and most challenging locations. Combined GPS and microclimate data mapped in GIS visualized dependencies between the streetscape, microclimate, and thermal perceptions. Moreover, we presented the evidence of thermal alliesthesia, a feeling of pleasure from relieving of thermal discomfort. This project is one of the first to examine the impact of urban environment on dynamic psychological and physiological responses to heat. Using sensing technologies and collecting subjective perceptions, this research will inform the design changes in the neighborhood that will undergo redevelopment. It can serve as an example for other cities striving to adapt urban microclimates to new extremes.

Water quality, temperature, ash-free dry mass, photosynthetic activate radiation (PAR), and zooplankton data from a warming and DOC subsidy experiment, 2020 - 2021.

This dataset includes chlorophyll-a concentrations, periphyton biomass estimates, water quality measurements, and qualitative observations from a large-scale mesocosm experiment conducted in the Green Lakes Watershed, Colorado. The experiment was designed to test how earlier lake ice-off and increased dissolved organic material (DOM), associated with terrestrial plant encroachment in alpine watersheds, interactively influence aquatic food webs. In fall 2019, twenty 2600L “megacosms” were established at Sandy Corner (3300 m ASL; 40.042289, -105.584006), left to fill with snowmelt, and maintained throughout the 2020 open water season. The experiment followed a 2 × 2 randomized block design manipulating ice-off timing (via black vs. beige tank coloration) and DOM inputs (presence/absence of willow leaf packs), with five replicates per treatment. All tanks were seeded with sediments and zooplankton from both alpine and montane lakes (Green Lake 1 and Green Lake 4), and instrumented with thermistors recording surface and hypolimnion temperature every two hours year-round. Periphyton growth was monitored using clay tiles, sampled across five time points. Chlorophyll-a concentrations were extracted from filtered water samples and analyzed spectrophotometrically. Periphyton biomass was estimated via ash-free dry mass (AFDM) determinations, based on the mass lost on combustion of material scraped from tiles. Water quality was measured 1–2 times weekly using a YSI ProPlus multiprobe and Li-Cor quantum sensor, and snow/ice cover was qualitatively assessed monthly during winter.

Natural Regeneration of Puerto Rican Tropical Dry Forest Sites with Limited Burn History, Guánica Forest, 2012

This dataset documents the natural regeneration of tropical dry forest sites with limited burn history in Guánica Forest, Puerto Rico, following fire disturbance. Featuring a 29-year chronosequence, the dataset encompasses both short-term (2–5 months) and long-term (2–29 years) recovery, alongside mature forest control sites (including forest sites containing native grass). Data collection was conducted between May and August 2012 and focuses on woody tree species only. The dataset includes tree census data from seven sites (chrono_census.csv), recording species identity, stem diameter, aboveground biomass destruction, and resprouting dynamics. Additional data include species mean trait values, such as relative bark thickness and specific leaf area, to examine relationships with post-fire resprouting (chrono_traits.csv), and a species abundance matrix for evaluating community composition shifts over time (chrono_ndmsmatrix.csv). Field data were collected from circular 100 m² plots randomly placed at each site, with all woody plants tagged and identified. Stem diameters (≥1 cm) were measured at breast height (DBH) or ground height (DGH) in new-burn sites. Tree mortality was assessed, and aboveground biomass loss (0–100%) was estimated in new-burn sites. Resprouting was also quantified in short-term regeneration sites in mid-August 2012. In long-term sites, tree height was measured for the five tallest individuals. The dataset is relevant for researchers investigating tropical dry forest dynamics, fire ecology, and regeneration processes in Caribbean forest ecosystems. The dataset is complete and not ongoing.

Life History Traits of Resprouting Puerto Rican Tropical Dry Forest Trees, Guánica Forest, 1981-2018

This dataset provides trait and demographic data for 44 tropical dry forest tree species from the Guánica State Forest in southwest Puerto Rico. The study area spans 4,500 ha of semi-deciduous TDF, where the sampled species represent over 90% of all individuals with a diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥2.5 cm. The dataset integrates ten functional traits, combining newly collected measurements (2017–2018) with previously published data (Vargas et al. 2021b). Previously published data includes xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity (ks), Huber value (hv), and hydraulic safety margin (HSM), with species-level data availability ranging from 19 to 44 species, except for HSM, which was measured for six species. Trait measurements were primarily collected during the wet season (August–November), except stomatal behaviour traits (psimax, psidv, and gsmax), which were assessed during the winter dry season before leaf fall. Demographic data encompass species-specific growth rates and annual survival rates for adult trees, derived from four permanent census plots (625 m² to 10,000 m²) distributed across the forest. These plots, established in mature upland TDF on limestone substrates with mollisol soils, were monitored between 1992 and 2019. Growth rate estimates are based on diameter increments recorded at regular censuses over 20.4–26.4 years. Survival rates were calculated over a 21-year period (1998–2019), mitigating the influence of extreme drought events. Standardised measurement protocols ensured data consistency, including repeated diameter assessments at multiple stem locations and the exclusion of wet-season measurements to prevent water-related swelling artifacts. Growth rates were derived from the regression slope of dbh against time, incorporating a minimum of two dbh measurements per individual (following Poorter et al. 2010). Annual survival rate was calculated over a 21-year timespan (1998–2019) to avoid bias introduced by an intense drought in 1997. The followin

Tree Census Data of Tropical Dry Forest Succession in Permanent Plots at Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica (1999–2004), Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS)

This data package contains tree census data from eight permanent forest plots established in 1999 across four successional sites within the tropical dry forest of Palo Verde National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica (10°21’N, 85°21’W). The plots were established to study forest structure, composition, and successional dynamics under different disturbance histories in the lowland dry forest ecosystem of northwestern Costa Rica. Each site represents a distinct successional stage, ranging from an early grass-dominated field (Jaragua) to an older partially disturbed remnant forest stand (Varillal). Two permanent 50×50 m plots were established at each site and subdivided into 10×10 m subplots. All woody stems with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm were tagged, identified to species, and spatially referenced using X–Y coordinates within each plot. For multi-stemmed individuals, all stems meeting the diameter threshold were measured separately. Tree diameter, condition, and taxonomic identification were recorded during four measurement campaigns in 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2004. The dataset includes species identity, DBH, measurement year, individual condition, and subplot coordinates for each stem. These data provide a baseline for understanding forest regeneration, mortality, recruitment, and species composition changes in tropical dry forest succession under varying land-use histories. The dataset represents the historical component of an ongoing long-term monitoring program of forest succession conducted by the Organization for Tropical Studies at Palo Verde National Park, led, developed and supported by Eugenio González since its establishment in 1999.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating and Drying Research (DryPEHR): Growing season, chamber-based, CO2 flux data, 2009-2021

This drying and warming experiment addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem drying, warming and permafrost thaw cause a net release or uptake of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool influence ecosystem C loss? 3) How do drying and warming affect plant communities and ecosystem properties? We are answering these questions using a combined warming and drying experiment (DryPEHR), which is situated with the Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project and located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Warming treatment here refers to growing season air temperature warming (~1C) using open top chambers (OTC) combined with soil 'warming' using snow fences during the snow covered months. Drying is achieved using an automated pumping system that lowers the water table in the dry plots. Soil warming began in 2008; OTCs and drying in 2011. This data set includes measured values of CO2 fluxes during the growing season.

Examination of protein-like fluorophores in chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in a wetland and coastal environment for the wet and dry seasons of the years 2002 and 2003 (FCE)

Water samples are collected at the end of the dry and the wet season from all LTER sites and stored on ice until return to the lab. They are pre-filtered through pre-combusted GF/F filters and ultrafiltered and concentrated with a Pellicon 2 Mini tangential flow ultrafiltration system.Concentrated samples were then analyzed using fluorescence and SEC-HPLC. This CDOM optical study revealed the presence of two classes of compounds associated with the protein-like peak (peak T; excitation/emission (Ex/Em) maxima at around 280 nm/325 nm), which have very different chemical structures and ecological roles. In addition to proteins, we propose phenolic compounds as possible origins of peak T in coastal and wetland environments. In this study, natural water samples were obtained from subtropical rivers and estuarine environments within the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) ecosystem. The samples were ultra-filtered and excitation-emission fluorescence matrices (EEMs) were obtained. The EEMs showed the presence of four peaks with Ex/Em maxima at around 280 nm/325 nm (T), less than 260 nm/460 nm (A), 300 nm/412nm (M), and 350 nm/470 nm (C). To better understand the nature of peak T, the components originating this peak were separated using size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and detected by fluorescence emission at Ex/Em = 280 nm/325 nm. The elution curves revealed the presence of two elution peaks at a molecular weight of greater than 50K (void volume; T1) and around 7.6K (T2). This result suggested the need of cautious interpretation in the use of peak T as a proxy for the detection of proteinaceous materials in wetland and estuarine environments, since significant amounts of potentially interfering phenolic compounds are leached from senescent biomass in wetland and coastal ecosystems. Soil biogeochemical measurements from the Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 131 (ASPA 131), McMurdo Dry Valleys Antarctica, December 2022

These data include soil biological properties (16S ASV community sequences, invertebrate community counts, ash-free dry mass, pigment concentrations), physical properties (location, gravimetric soil moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, remote detection of soil moisture change), chemical properties (dissolved inorganic nitrogen, extractable sulfate ions, extractable Cl ions) from soils collected within the Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 131 (ASPA-131) surrounding Canada Stream in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Collection sites were associated with a warming event that occurred on March 22, 2022, and include the following remotely-sensed categories: V - validation sites representing arid soils with little soil moisture and minimal detectable change in liquid water, S - significant sites that had a significant increase in liquid water, and N - nonsignificant sites that had detectable moisture but did not experience a significant increase in liquid water. These data aid in our understanding of how landscape heterogeneity and hydroclimate variability influence soil biota communities sensitive to changes in liquid water availability in a polar desert.

Continuous depth-integrated fluorometric phytoplankton measurements in Lake Bonney, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2013-2017)

Phytoplankton are key primary producers in the photic zones of permanently ice-covered lakes in Antarctica’s McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV), playing a crucial role in regional carbon cycling. However, their seasonal dynamics remain poorly understood, particularly during winter, when the region is inaccessible to researchers. To address this gap, the Autonomous Lake Profiler and Samplers (ALPS) project, part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) program, deployed sensors and samplers to collect year-round data on phytoplankton dynamics. This data package provides continuous, depth-integrated fluorometric measurements of phytoplankton communities in Lake Bonney from 2013 to 2017. A submersible spectrofluorometer (bbe Moldaenke FluoroProbe) was used to quantify the vertical distribution of key algal classes – brown/mixed algae, green algae, and cryptophytes – within the deep photic zone of the lake’s eastern (21–24 m) and western (16–24 m) lobes. Lake Bonney serves as a year-round refugium for life in extreme environments, but rapid lake level rise over the past three decades has introduced new uncertainties regarding phytoplankton community dynamics. These data contribute to ongoing efforts to understand how environmental change influences microbial ecology in polar aquatic ecosystems.

Stable isotope (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) measurements of water column and benthic samples from Lake Joyce, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, November 2014

Water column and benthic samples were collected from Lake Joyce, a perennially ice-covered lake in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, to support stable isotope analyses. Water column samples were collected in November 2014 at depths ranging from 6 to 53 m using a Niskin bottle deployed through a borehole in the lake ice. The deepest sample (53 m) was collected with concurrent live-drop camera observations to ensure that sampling did not disrupt the underlying sediments. Benthic water samples were collected by divers along the delta front on the north side of the lake, targeting topographic low points at depths between 10 and 28.2 m to assess potential pooling of hyporheic discharge. These samples were taken within ~5 cm of the sediment-water interface using 60 mL syringes. This data package includes stable water isotope measurements (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) to support investigations of spatial variability in lake water isotopic composition and potential hydrologic inputs.

Lake level surveys in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1968-2025, ongoing)

This data package contains lake level measurements from multiple lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, collected seasonally as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) program. Parameters include air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, photosynthetically active radiation, incoming and outgoing shortwave and longwave radiation, wind speed and direction, surface distance, as well as soil bulk electrical conductivity, dielectric permittivity, temperature, and volumetric water content.
