The ecological and economic benefits of sustainable agricultural practices

<p><strong>Code and data for Mata et al.'s&nbsp;<em>The ecological and economic benefits of sustainable agricultural practices: Evidence from on-farm trials in broad-acre crops.&nbsp;</em></strong></p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>1. A transition to more sustainable agricultural practices is essential to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of conventional farming and to ensure long-term food security. However, widespread adoption requires robust evidence demonstrating their efficacy and economic viability.</p> <p>2. We co-designed a two-year field trial with farmers and agronomy advisors in Australia to evaluate the ecological and economic outcomes of sustainable agricultural practices for managing the redlegged earth mite, a major pest of Australian crops and pastures. We compared 'Novel' treatments &ndash; representing long-term farmer-implemented sustainable practices based on biological control &ndash; with 'Conventional' treatments, and 'Plus' treatments designed as counterfactuals to disentangle the effects of specific pest control and plant nutrient components.</p> <p>3. Redlegged earth mite densities remained below economic thresholds across all treatments and years, demonstrating effective pest control in both conventional and sustainable systems. Notably, the Novel treatment supported higher densities of beneficial arthropods, suggesting increased biological control potential.</p> <p>4. Yield and gross profit margins were generally similar across treatments, indicating that sustainable agriculture practices can maintain profitability while fostering biodiversity.</p> <p>Practical implication. Our study provides evidence that biological control and biofertiliser supplementation can be effectively used to manage agricultural pests. It also demonstrates the value of close collaboration with farmers and agronomy advisors in conducting ecological field research with real-world applications.</p>

<p>This dataset contains all the results and scenarios for this paper. Each region has two files in which you can find all the scenarios for the market design with and without the local energy market. The folders within these files contain the results for one scenario for a given share of PV, EVs, and heat pumps (HPs). The results folders can also be used to rerun the scenarios. CROSSBOW HLU2-UC6-TC1 Economical benefit of mFRR market participation with 5% of energy saved for upward regulation

<p>The energy market participation algorithm of RES-CC allows for participating in DA/ID markets and balancing markets. The process uses the energy generation forecasting of the plants to generate the energy bids for the DA/ID market. With regards to the mFRR market, the whole amount of curtailable energy is offered for downward regulation. Additionally, the process is configurable so that it can save a given amount of the potential generation, do not offering this energy in the DA/ID market but offering it for upward regulation in the mFRR. This upward regulation can only be done with Renewables by means of not selling part of the forecasted energy. This is a risk, as the upward regulation energy might not be requested by the operator, and thus the profit for the generation will be lost.</p> <p>This dataset contains the results of the market participation algorithm running for a week, configured for offering 5% of the forecasted energy for upward regulation.</p> <p>Dataset contains the results for the CROSSBOW portfolios of Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece.</p> <p>For each country, hour by hour, the following information is provided:</p> <ul> <li>Energy sold in IDM</li> <li>Forecasted generation</li> <li>Energy sold mFRR down</li> <li>Energy sold mFRR up</li> <li>Energy price mFRR down</li> <li>Energy price mFRR up</li> <li>Energy price in IDM</li> <li>Energy looses (saved and not sold in mFRR up)</li> </ul>

<p>This repository contains replication data for Carleton et al. (Quarterly Journal of Economics, 2022), "Valuing the mortality consequences of climate change accounting for adaptation costs and benefits". All non-confidential data inputs are included, as well as intermediate data outputs, final data outputs, and final tables and figures for all main text and supplementary tables and figures. Some input data are confidential (e.g., mortality records in some countries); therefore, intermediate regression results files are included in the upload to ensure all later stages of the analysis are fully replicable. Public health and economic benefits of spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) in a peri-urban system

<p>Species that depend on anthropogenic waste for food can remove pathogens that pose health risks to humans and livestock, thereby saving lives and money. Quantifying these benefits is rare, yet can lead to innovative conservation solutions.</p> <p>To assess these benefits, we examined the feeding ecology and population size of peri-urban spotted hyenas (<i>Crocuta crocuta</i>) in Mekelle, Ethiopia. We integrated these field data into a disease transmission model to predict: a) the number of anthrax and bovine tuberculosis (bTB) infections arising in humans and livestock from infected carcass waste, and b) the costs associated with treating these infections and losing livestock. We compared these public health and economic outcomes under two scenarios: a) hyenas are present, and b) the counterfactual, hyenas are absent.</p> <p>We estimated that hyenas annually remove 4.2% (207 tonnes) of the total carcass waste disposed of by residents and businesses in Mekelle. Furthermore, the scavenging behaviour of hyenas annually prevents five infections of anthrax and bTB in humans, and 140 infections in cattle, sheep and goats. This disease control service potentially saves USD 52,165 due to the treatment costs and livestock loss avoided.</p> <p><i>Synthesis and applications</i>. This human-hyena interaction in Ethiopia is evidence that large carnivores can contribute to human health and economy. To retain these benefits and maintain tolerance of hyenas, we recommend: introducing education programs to promote safe outdoor behaviour around hyenas, training watchdogs to alert residents of hyena presence, constructing bomas to protect livestock from hyena attacks, and preserving the hyenas' access to carcass waste to reduce their dependency on livestock predation. With humans and carnivores coming more frequently into contact, understanding and communicating how these species can benefit humanity will be critical to motivating human-carnivore coexistence worldwide.</p>
