Ocean model simulations in cold-water coral ecosystems off the coasts of Angola and Namibia in the Southeast Atlantic: Setup, boundary conditions and model results.
<p>The dataset contains all essential data for the setup of high-resolution local area model implementations using the ROMS-AGRIF model version 3.1 in two cold-water coral regions off the coasts of Angola and Namibia in the Southeast Atlantic. The data include computational grids, initialization fields (temperature, salinity), and boundary conditions (temperature, salinity, currents, and sea surface height) for each model area. Multi-disciplinary survey data for the assessment of regulating and recreational ecosystem services in urban parks under heat and drought conditions
<p>The research group GreenEquityHEALTH provides quantified knowledge on how urban green spaces contribute to the mitigation of climate change induced challenges and challenges from urbanization to improve health, well-being and environmental justice. Sphagnum-dominated bogs represent a unique yet widely distributed type of terrestrial ecosystem, and strongly contribute to global biosphere functioning. Sphagnum is colonised by highly diverse microbial communities, but less is known about their function. We identified a high functional diversity within the Sphagnum microbiome applying an Illumina-based metagenomic approach followed by de novo assembly and MG-RAST annotation. An inter-environmental comparison revealed that the Sphagnum microbiome harbours specific genetic features that distinguish it significantly from microbiomes of higher plants and peat soils. The differential traits especially support ecosystem functioning by a symbiotic life style under poikilohydric and ombrotrophic conditions. To realise a plasticity-stability balance, we found abundant subsystems responsible to cope with oxidative and drought stresses, to exchange (mobile) genetic elements, and genes that encode for resistance to detrimental environmental factors, repair, and self-controlling mechanisms. Multiple microbe-microbe and plant-microbe interactions were also found to play a crucial role as indicated by diverse genes necessary for biofilm formation, interaction via quorum sensing and nutrient exchange. A high proportion of genes involved in nitrogen cycle and recycling of organic material supported the role of bacteria for nutrient supply. 16S rDNA analysis indicated a higher structural diversity than that which had been previously detected using PCR-dependent techniques. Altogether, the diverse Sphagnum microbiome has the ability to support the life of the host plant and the entire ecosystem under changing environmental conditions. Beyond this, the moss microbiome presents a promising bio-resource for environmental biotechnology – with respect to novel enzymes or stress-protecting bacteria.
Investigating Conditioning Factors for Transparency in Software Ecosystems
<p>Supplementary material for the paper "Investigating Conditioning Factors for Transparency in Software Ecosystems", published in the Journal of Software Engineering Research and Development (JSERD).</p> <p>Software Ecosystems (SECO) are a set of actors interacting with a distributed market centered on a common technological platform to develop products and services. In this context, transparency allows third-party developers to learn processes and elements that integrate the SECO platform. This non-functional requirement impacts the coordination of developers and the management of requirements that emerge in SECO. Although it is an essential requirement, there is still a lack of a roadmap on what constitutes transparency in SECO. Thus, this article aims to characterize conditioning factors for transparency in SECO. To do so, we conducted a systematic mapping study (SMS) and a field study to identify and analyze such factors. After investigating the literature, we selected 23 studies to analyze the state-of-the-art about transparency in SECO. Next, we conducted interviews with 16 software developers to characterize the importance of conditioning factors for transparency identified in their interaction with GitHub, a platform to support project-based ecosystems. As results, we obtained a comprehensive view of solutions, conditioning factors, processes, and concerns related to transparency in SECO, whose discussion is centered on three main topics: access to information, communication channels, and requirements engineering. We also present a conceptual framework that structures all the knowledge about transparency in SECO obtained in both studies. Regarding implications for academia and industry, researchers can find a conceptual framework to be used as a foundation for systematic approaches to understanding transparency in SECO. Practitioners can find solutions and conditioning factors that help them to adopt initiatives to contribute to the open flow of information in a SECO and, thus, attract and engage new actors to a common technological platform.</p>

Data from: Plant functional traits and environmental conditions shape community assembly and ecosystem functioning during restoration
Recovering biological diversity and ecosystem functioning are primary objectives of ecological restoration, yet these outcomes are often unpredictable. Assessments based on functional traits may help with interpreting variability in both community composition and ecosystem functioning because of their mechanistic and generalizable nature. This promise remains poorly realized, however, because tests linking environmental conditions, functional traits, and ecosystem functioning in restoration are rare. Here, we provide such a test through what is to our knowledge the first empirical application of the 'response–effect trait framework' to restoration. This framework provides a trait-based bridge between community assembly and ecosystem functioning by describing how species respond to environmental conditions based on traits and how the traits of species affect ecosystem functioning. Our study took place across 29 prairies restored from former agricultural fields in southwestern Michigan. We considered how environmental conditions affect ecosystem functioning through and independently of measured functional traits. To do so, we paired field-collected trait data with data on plant community composition and measures of ecosystem functioning and used structural equation modelling to determine relationships between environmental conditions, community-weighted means of functional traits and ecosystem functioning. Environmental conditions were predictive of trait composition. Sites restored directly from tillage (as opposed to those allowed to fallow) supported taller species with larger seeds and higher specific leaf area (SLA). Site age and fire frequency were both negatively related to SLA. We also found a positive relationship between soil moisture and SLA. Both trait composition and environmental conditions predicted ecosystem functioning, but these relationships varied among the measured functions. Pollination mode (animal pollination) increased and fire frequency decreased floral resource availability, seed mass had a negative effect on below-ground biomass production, and vegetative height increased decomposition rate. Soil moisture and fire frequency both increased while site age decreased above-ground biomass production, and site age and soil moisture both increased decomposition rate. Synthesis and applications. Our results suggest that both trait composition and environmental conditions play a role in shaping ecosystem function during restoration, and the importance of each is dependent on the function of interest. Because of this, environmental heterogeneity will be necessary to promote multiple ecosystem functions across restored landscapes. A trait-based approach to restoration can aid interpretation of variable outcomes through insights into community assembly and ecosystem functioning.
