WSC 2006: Spatial interactions among ecosystem services in the Yahara Watershed

Understanding spatial distributions, synergies and tradeoffs of multiple ecosystem services (benefits people derive from ecosystems) remains challenging. We analyzed the supply of 10 ecosystem services for 2006 across a large urbanizing agricultural watershed in the Upper Midwest of the United States, and asked: (i) Where are areas of high and low supply of individual ecosystem services, and are these areas spatially concordant across services? (ii) Where on the landscape are the strongest tradeoffs and synergies among ecosystem services located? (iii) For ecosystem service pairs that experience tradeoffs, what distinguishes locations that are win win exceptions from other locations? Spatial patterns of high supply for multiple ecosystem services often were not coincident locations where six or more services were produced at high levels (upper 20th percentile) occupied only 3.3 percent of the landscape. Most relationships among ecosystem services were synergies, but tradeoffs occurred between crop production and water quality. Ecosystem services related to water quality and quantity separated into three different groups, indicating that management to sustain freshwater services along with other ecosystem services will not be simple. Despite overall tradeoffs between crop production and water quality, some locations were positive for both, suggesting that tradeoffs are not inevitable everywhere and might be ameliorated in some locations. Overall, we found that different areas of the landscape supplied different suites of ecosystem services, and their lack of spatial concordance suggests the importance of managing over large areas to sustain multiple ecosystem services. Data set on the impact of selected plant protection products on ecosystem service providers, including interactive effects

<p>The Excel files contain&nbsp;the results of ecotoxicological tests for the effects of selected insecticides on ESP species. The objective of this dataset is to provide original data from acute and semi-chronic laboratory tests on a few important beneficial species with broad geographic distribution.&nbsp;The data allow the evaluation of delayed effects and possible interactive effects of combined treatments for those pesticides that are commonly used in mixtures or sprayed next to each other in short time intervals, effectively exposing non-target arthropods to combined/sequential effects. Each data file contains the &ldquo;Description&rdquo; sheet where all details of the test and the exact meaning of data fields in the database are reported. The data files are named in a self-explanatory manner, starting with the name of the institution that produced the data (UC &ndash; University of Coimbra; UJA &ndash; Jagiellonian University), followed by the name of the tested species and names of tested products.</p>

Fire recurrence and time since last fire interact to determine the supply of multiple ecosystem services by Mediterranean forests

<p>Wildfires shape the composition and functioning of Mediterranean ecosystems, but we do not know how these ecosystems respond to both the higher fire recurrence and shorter recovery times expected for future climatic scenarios.  We sampled 29 plots with different fire recurrences (from 0 to  4 fires over the past decades) and time since the last fire (up to 35 years; hereafter TSLF) in Southeast Spain, to assess the effect of fire recurrence and TSLF on 25 ecosystem attributes, five related ecosystem services (biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, disturbance regulation, food production,  and supporting services), plus the synergies and trade-offs between them. High fire recurrence (number of fires) and TSLF interacted to determine ecosystem services but did not affect the synergies and trade-offs between them. Fire recurrence reduced many ecosystem functions and ecosystem multifunctionality. However, this effect dampened, and even became positive, for biodiversity conservation and food production services provided enough (&gt; 20 years) time to recover. The combined effects of fire recurrence and TSLF, however, reduced carbon sequestration and had no overall effects on supporting services. Disturbance regulation, in turn, diminished drastically with the first fire, with no effect of further fires or their interaction with TSLF. Our results show which ecosystem services will suffer more from an increase in fire recurrence, and where restoration and management efforts should focus to maximize the provision of those services more demanded by stakeholders.</p>
