Global dataset of nitrogen fixation rates across inland and coastal waters based on a coordinated synthesis effort

Biological nitrogen fixation converts inert di-nitrogen gas into bioavailable nitrogen and can be an important source of bioavailable nitrogen to organisms. This dataset synthesizes the aquatic nitrogen fixation rate measurements across inland and coastal waters. Data were derived from papers and datasets published by April 2022 and include rates measured using the acetylene reduction assay (ARA), 15N2 labeling, or the N2/Ar technique. The dataset is comprised of 4793 nitrogen fixation rates measurements from 267 studies, and is structured into four tables: 1) a reference table with sources from which data were extracted, 2) a rates table with nitrogen fixation rates that includes habitat, substrate, geographic coordinates, and method of measuring N2 fixation rates, 3) a table with supporting environmental and chemical data for a subset of the rate measurements when data were available, and 4) a data dictionary with definitions for each variable in each data table. This dataset was compiled and curated by the NSF-funded Aquatic Nitrogen Fixation Research Coordination Network (award number 2015825).

PRE02 Reproductive effort of Big Bluestem, Indiangrass and Little Bluestem on selected Konza Prairie LTER watersheds

This data set focuses on seed production, flowering stem mass, height, and population densities of three dominant prairie grasses: Andropogon gerardii (ANGE), Sorgastrum nutans (SONU), and Schizachyrium scoparium (ANSC) in selected Konza Prairie LTER watersheds. Data set includes measurements of flowering stem height (m), density (no. per sq. m) and production (grams per sq. m) and total seed weight (grams) and production (grams per sq. on 2 soil types (shallow and deep) in watersheds representing different burning-grazing treatment combinations. Specific watersheds sampled have varied over time. Current watersheds include: 001d, R01a, R01b, 002c, 002d, 004a, 004b, 020b, R20a, R20b, 0SpA, 0SpB, 0SuA, 0SuB, 00FA, 00FB, 00WA and 00WB Sampling is done once a year in October/November (end of growing season). Fish catch and biomass per unit effort from McDermott and Sandy Beach Lakes 2017-2020

Centarchidae spp., a warm-adapted group of fishes including basses and sunfishes, has increased in recent decades in Wisconsin. Concurrently, declines in cool-adapted species, including Walleye (Sander vitreus), have occurred but the cause is not understood. Multiple factors have been associated with these declines, including rising lake temperatures, habitat degradation, harvest, and species interactions. To quantify the role that competition and/or predation between increasing centrarchids and the rest of the fish community plays, we are conducting a whole-lake experiment to remove centrarchids from an experimental lake in northern Wisconsin while measuring the response of all other fish species. In 2018 and 2019, ~200,000 centrarchid individuals were removed, while species-specific catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) and biomass-per-unit-effort (BPUE) were measured. Yellow Perch have increased in CPUE and BPUE, while centrarchid abundances have declined. We will continue removing centrarchids in 2021 and monitoring these populations. This information will be used to inform an understanding of the conditions necessary to support self-sustaining fish populations given global environmental change.

SBC LTER: Reef: Abundance, size and fishing effort for California Spiny Lobster (Panulirus interruptus), ongoing since 2012

Data on abundance, size and fishing pressure of California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) are collected along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel. Spiny lobsters are an important predator in giant kelp forests off southern California. Two SBC LTER study reefs are located in or near the California Fish and Game Network of Marine Protected Areas (MPA), Naples and Isla Vista, both established as MPAs on 2012-01-01. MPAs provide a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of fishing on kelp forest community dynamics. Sampling began in 2012 and is ongoing. This dataset contains two tables. 1) Abundance and size data collected annually by divers in late summer before the start of the fishing season at five SBC LTER long term kelp forest study sites: two within MPAs (Naples and Isla Vista) and three outside (Arroyo Quemado, Mohawk and Carpinteria). 2) Fishing pressure, as determined by counting the number of commercial trap floats. Data are collected every two to four weeks during the lobster fishing season (October to March) at nine sites along the mainland, eight of which are also SBC LTER long-term kelp forest study reefs. Data set of two dual-task paradigms to measure listening effort in cochlear implant users

<p>This data set presents the data from the paper by Hendrikse, Dingemanse, &amp; Goedegebure (2022). This study aimed to investigate&nbsp;the feasibility of using listening effort to measure relatively small differences in SNR, as would arise from different hearing-device settings. Listening effort was chosen, because there are indications in literature that listening effort may be more sensitive to differences between hearing-device settings than established speech intelligibility measures.&nbsp;Two behavioral listening effort tests were performed at two signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) where the intelligibility was high. A sentence final word identification and recall test (SWIRT), and a sentence verification test (SVT) were compared with a group of 18&nbsp;Dutch CI users. SWIRT measured the ability to recall the final words of sentences after a list of five or seven sentences was presented. The SVT measured the ability and reaction time to determine whether a sentence was true or false. Both tests were conducted in background noise at SNRs +4 dB and +8 dB above the 50% speech perception threshold. The structure of the data files is explained in the README file.</p>

PBG04 Reproductive effort of Big Bluestem, Indiangrass and Little Bluestem in the Patch-Burn Grazing Experiment at Konza Prairie

'PBG' datasets are associated with a long-term, large-scale study that is addressing the effects of fire-grazing interactions in the context of a Patch-Burn Grazing management system designed to promote grassland heterogeneity. Effects of patch-burn grazing management on plant and animal diversity and the nature and variety of wildlife habitat are being assessed in two replicate management units, each consisting of three pastures (watersheds) designated C03A/C03B/C03C and C3SA/C3SB/C3SC. In each patch-burn grazing unit, one watershed is burned and two that are left unburned in a given year. The burning treatments are rotated annually so that each pasture is burned every third year. Each patch-burn grazing unit is paired with an annually-burned pasture for comparison with traditional grazing systems (C01A and C1SB). All grazing units are stocked with cow/calf pairs from approximately 1 May until 1 Oct at a stocking density equal to 3.2 ha per cow/calf. To examine the impact of patch burning and grazing in all 8 units, we monitor changes in plant species composition, residual biomass, grassland bird populations, insect populations, small mammal populations, soil nutrients, and stream water quality1 (1C3SA/C3SB/C3SC unit only). The KSU Department of Animal Science monitors cattle performance, including weight gain and body condition to assess the economic feasibility of using patch-burn management on a widespread basis. PBG041 includes data on flowering stem height (m) of three dominant prairie grasses: Andropogon gerardii (ANGE), Sorghastrum nutans (SONU), and Schizachyrium scoparium (ANSC). PBG042 includes flowering stem density (no. per sq. m) and mass (grams per sq. m) for the same grass species.

Fishery impacts - CA commercial lobster catch and effort, and trap distribution around marine reserves

These data describe landings and fishing effort for the CA commercial spiny lobster fishery. Data are contained in two tables: 1) a time series collected by the California Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) of lobster catch (kg) and effort (lobster trap pulls) by year (1998-2020) and location (geographic fishery blocks). Catch is recorded and reported to CDFW by fish processors (buyers) with “fish tickets”. Trap pulls are recorded and reported by fishermen with logbooks. 2) The number of traps counted in the water at increasing distances from the boundary of marine reserves, three reserves located in the northern region of the fishery and three from the southern region of the fishery, in November 2022.

Resource heterogeneity leads to unjust effort distribution in climate change mitigation

<p>Climate change mitigation is a shared global challenge that involves the collective action of a set of individuals with different tendencies to cooperation. However, we lack an understanding of the effect of resource inequality when diverse actors interact together toward a common goal. Here, we report the results of a collective-risk dilemma experiment in which groups of individuals were initially given either equal or unequal endowments. We found that the effort distribution was highly inequitable, with participants with fewer resources contributing significantly more to the public goods than the richer - sometimes twice as much. An unsupervised learning algorithm classified the subjects according to their individual behavior, finding the poorest participants within two &quot;generous clusters&#39;&quot;&nbsp;and the richest into a &quot;greedy cluster&#39;&#39;. Sampling Effort Metadata for the Central and South Atlantic Offshore and Deep-Sea Benthos

<p>Metadata containing information on the sampling of&nbsp;benthic taxa in =&gt; 30 m water depth in the Central and South Atlantic. This data was compiled as part of a baseline review of the science, policy and management of the region (Bridges et al. in press). Data and R code for “Individual-level variation in reproductive effort in chestnut oak (Quercus montana Willd.) and black oak (Q. velutina Lam.)”, Forest Ecology and Management, 2022

Masting is a population-level reproductive strategy, where individuals synchronize large but intermittent seed production. Despite the high degree of synchrony at the population level, there can be considerable variation in reproduction among individuals (intraspecific variation). Here, we use 18 years of acorn production data from individual chestnut oak and black oak from control and thinned stands, to understand what factors influence individual differences in reproductive effort and variability. We included a variety of tree-level measurements, environmental characteristics, and measurements from tree cores to determine if certain characteristics were associated variations in reproduction. We considered both mean annual acorn production per m2 crown and interannual variation in acorn production (CV) as response variables. We also classified individuals as super producers (i.e., those that consistently produce more acorns than others), good, fair and poor producers (i.e., those that consistently produce less or have a higher number of failure years). In chestnut oak, 14% of the individuals were classified as super producers and contributed 34% of the total acorns, while poor producers made up 35% of the trees and contributed only 16% to total acorn production. In black oak, super producers (14% of the individuals) contributed 31% of total acorns and poor producers (24% of the individuals) contributed only 9% of the acorns. Diameter at breast height (DBH) was the most consistent variable for explaining intraspecific variation in reproductive effort and variability (i.e., larger individuals had higher mean acorn production for both chestnut oak and black oak, and lower CV for black oak). Other variables that influenced reproduction and variation included elevation and clay content for chestnut oak, and slope for black oak.
