Assessing Grid Affordability for Universal Electricity Access in Sub-Saharan Africa

<p>This repository contains all the necessary original data for the publication&nbsp;<em>"Assessing Grid Affordability for Universal Electricity Access in Sub-Saharan Africa."</em> It includes the original documents detailing the tariff structures of 48 SSA countries, as well as population data, the Gini index, and gross national income per capita, which are used to simulate income distribution. Additionally, it provides calculator tools for estimating electricity bills based on the Multi-Tier Framework and assessing grid electricity affordability by comparing simulated income with electricity costs.</p> <p>The related code and result datasets supporting this publication are available through the GitHub public repository: <a href="https://rb.gy/f68tx5" target="_new" rel="noopener">https://rb.gy/f68tx5</a>.</p>

Strategic low-cost energy investment opportunities and challenges towards achieving universal electricity access (SDG7) in forty-eight African nations.

<p>This dataset underpins the study &quot;Strategic low-cost energy investment opportunities and challenges towards achieving universal electricity access (SDG7) in forty-eight African nations&quot;.</p> <p>The study&nbsp;provides insights into energy supply and demand, power generation, investments and total system costs, SD7 indicators, job creation as well as carbon dioxide emissions for each African nation (48 in total).</p> <p>An energy systems model enhanced with geospatial data was developed to evaluate energy supply&nbsp;requirements to cover the energy needs of the African continent during the period 2015-2030 and achieve universal access by 2030. The model was developed using the open-source modeling system for long-term energy planning OSeMOSYS and the geospatial&nbsp;electrification outlook (GEP). The objective function is to minimise the total energy system costs.&nbsp;</p> <p>The results can be found&nbsp; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6468262</p>

SDG Indicator 7.1.1: Access to Electricity, 2023 Release

The SDG Indicator 7.1.1: Access to Electricity, 2023 Release data set, part of the Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (SDGI) collection, measures the proportion of the population with access to electricity for a given statistical area. UN SDG 7 is "ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all". Tracking SDG 7: The Energy Progress Report estimated that in 2019, 759 million people around the world lacked access to electricity. Moreover, due to current policies and the detrimental effects of the COVID-19 crisis, it is predicted that by 2030, 660 million people will still not have access to electricity, with a majority of these people residing in Sub-Saharan Africa. As one measure of progress towards SDG 7, the UN agreed upon SDG indicator 7.1.1. The indicator was computed as the proportion of WorldPop gridded population located within illuminated areas defined by annual VIIRS Nighttime Lights Version 2 (VNL V2) data. The SDG indicator 7.1.1 data set provides estimates for the proportion of population with access to electricity for 206 countries and 45,979 level 2 subnational Units. The data set is available at both national and level 2 subnational resolutions.
