S62 | NORMANEWS2 | NormaNEWS2: Retrospective Screening of New Emerging Contaminants

This is the collection associated with list S62 NORMANEWS2 on the NORMAN Suspect List Exchange.

https://www.norman-network.com/nds/SLE/

List of suspects provided by many contributors to NormaNEWS2, collated by Kevin Thomas and colleagues at UQ.

The Norman Early Warning System (NormaNEWS) is a collaborative activity aimed at members active in non-target analysis. The concept of NormaNEWS is that when one group identifies a new contaminant of emerging concern identification criteria are sent to other members of the group who use retrospective analysis techniques to check their own samples. This way we can rapidly establish the occurrence of newly identified compounds of emerging concern across Europe and beyond. NormaNEWS is lead by Kevin Thomas at NIVA (Norway) / University of Queensland (Australia) as part of the Non-target screening cross-working group activity of the NORMAN network.

What is NormaNEWS and how does it work

The first round of the collaborative NormaNEWS joint activity in 2016 successfully demonstrated the usefulness of the retrospective screening of high resolution mass spectrometric data in establishing the spatial and temporal occurrence of newly identified compounds of emerging concern. The results of this pilot study are presented in Alygizakis et al., ES&T, DOI: 10.1021/acs.est.8b00365. The list of contaminants screened can be found on the NORMAN Suspect Exchange and the CompTox Chemistry Dashboard.

To build on the first study, the NORMAN network has decided to launch NormaNEWS 2 as part of the activities of the NTS Cross-Working Group Activity (NORMAN JPA 2018 and NORMAN JPA 2019).

In NormaNEWS 2 we wish to further develop this approach to cover many more contaminants of emerging concern, include a broader range of matrices, and significantly increase temporal and spatial coverage.

While NORMAN members are encouraged to participate in NormaNEWS, laboratories outside the NORMAN network are also welcome to participate.

Chemical analysis dataset for contaminants of emerging concern and bioanalytical data for samples from a low mountain stream in Central Germany

In 2022, river-water samples were collected at six sampling sites along the Holtemme River in Central Germany using large-volume solid phase extraction. The extracts were analysed by target chemical analysis for contaminants of emerging concern. In addition, the extracts were analysed in a bioanalytical test battery using effect-based tools. The battery included assays for cytotoxicity (neutral red retention assay), oxidative stress (Nrf2-CALUX®), endocrine disruption (ER-, AR-, anti-ER-, anti-AR-, GR- and PR-CALUX®) and the fish embryotoxicity test with zebrafish (Danio rerio). The data obtained are included in the .csv files in this repository.

Dataset: A multi-label classifier for predicting the most appropriate instrumental method for the analysis of contaminants of emerging concern

NORMAN Suspect List Exchange was used for the generation of the dataset. Datasets with clear label (LC or GC) were used. More specifically, we used S3 NORMANCT15, which contains a list of compounds that were detected in surface water from the Danube River in a pan-European collaborative trial employing both GC-HRMS and LC-HRMS. Moreover, the GC and LC target list were used by the following two institutes: National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). S21 UATHTARGETS is the LC target list of NKUA, S65 UATHTARGETSGC is the GC target list of NKUA and S53 UFZWANATARG contains the LC and GC target list of UFZ. Finally, two GC target lists (S51 WRIGCHRMS and S70 EISUSGCEIMS) were used. These lists contain GC substance lists and were provided by two Slovak institutes, the Water Research Institute (WRI) and Environmental Institute. The aforementioned compound lists were merged together to form a labelled dataset. The SMILES were used to calculate 1446 molecular descriptors. 1446 descriptors were produced by PaDEL-descriptor, logP was produced by JRgui and boiling point by USEPA ECOSAR.

The dataset is used in the publication:

"A multi-label classifier for predicting the most appropriate instrumental method for the analysis of contaminants of emerging concern" authored by

Nikiforos Alygizakis, Vasileios Konstantakos, Grigoris Bouziotopoulos , Evangelos Kormentzas, Jaroslav Slobodnik and Nikolaos S. Removal of contaminants of emerging concern from the supernatant of anaerobically digested sludge by O3 and O3/H2O2: Ozone requirements, effects of the matrix, and toxicity

Digestate is a rich source of nutrients that can be applied in agricultural fields as fertilizer or irrigation water.
However, most of the research about application of digestate have focused on its agronomic properties and
neglected the potential harm of the presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Aadvanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have proved to be effective for removing these compounds from drinking water, yet there are some constrains to treat wastewater and digestate mainly due to their complex matrix. In this study, the feasibility to remove different CECs from digestate using O3 and O3/H2O2 was assessed, and the general effect of the matrix in the oxidation was explained. While the lab-scale ozonation provided an ozone dose of 1.49 mg O3/mg DOC in 5 h treatment, almost all the compounds were removed at a lower ozone dose of maximum 0.48 mg O3/ mg DOC; only ibuprofen required a higher dose of 1.1 mg O3/mg DOC to be oxidized. The digestate matrix slowed down the kinetic ozonation rate to approximately 1% compared to the removal rate in demineralized water. The combined treatment (O3/H2O2) showed the additional contribution of H2O2 by decreasing the ozone demand by 59–75% for all the compounds. The acute toxicity of the digestate, measured by the inhibition of Vibrio fisheries luminescence, decreased by 18.1% during 5 h ozonation, and by 34% during 5 h O3/H2O2 treatment. Despite the high ozone consumption, the ozone dose (mg O3/mg DOC) required to remove all CECs from digestate supernatant was in the range or lower than what has been reported for other (waste-)water matrix, implying that ozonation can be considered as a post-AD treatment to produce cleaner stream for agricultural purposes.
