Arts and humanities in the LTER Network: understanding extent, values, and challenges by assessing the relevance of empathy in the LTER Network, 2013-2014
The Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Network is a collection of 25 National Science Foundation-funded sites committed to long-term, place-based investigation of the natural world. While activities primarily focus on ecological research, arts and humanities inquiry emerged in 2002 and since then a substantial body of creative work has been produced at LTER-affiliated sites. These art-humanities-science collaborations parallel a wider trend in universities and nonprofits. However, there is little empirical work on the value and effectiveness of this work. After launching a survey in 2013 to assess the values and challenges associated with arts and humanities in the LTER Network, which identified empathy as a meaningful potential outcome of this creative work, we conducted a follow-up analysis to understand: the relevance of empathy in the LTER Network; the role of empathy in bridging arts, humanities, and science collaborations; and the capacity of empathy to connect wider audiences both to LTER science and to the natural world. Our research included phone interviews with representatives from 15 LTER sites and an audience perception survey at an LTER-hosted art show. We found that arts-humanities-science collaborations have great potential to catalyze relationships between scholars, the public, and the natural world; cultivate inspiration and empathy for the natural world; and spark awareness shifts that can enable pro-environmental behavior. Our research demonstrates the potential for art-humanities-science collaborations to facilitate conservation attitudes and action in the Network and beyond.
Data from: Grand Theft Empathy? Evidence for the absence of effects of violent video games on empathy for pain and emotional reactivity to violence
<p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p><p>Influential accounts claim that violent video games (VVG) decrease players' emotional empathy by desensitizing them to both virtual and real-life violence. However, scientific evidence for this claim is inconclusive and controversially debated. To assess the causal effect of VVGs on the behavioral and neural correlates of empathy and emotional reactivity to violence, we conducted a prospective experimental study using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We recruited eighty-nine male participants without prior VVG experience. Over the course of two weeks, participants played either a highly violent video game, or a non-violent version of the same game. Before and after this period, participants completed an fMRI experiment with paradigms measuring their empathy for pain and emotional reactivity to violent images. Applying a Bayesian analysis approach throughout enabled us to find substantial evidence for the absence of an effect of VVGs on the behavioral and neural correlates of empathy. Moreover, participants in the VVG group were not desensitized to images of real-world violence. These results imply that short and controlled exposure to VVGs does not numb empathy nor the responses to real-world violence. We discuss the implications of our findings regarding the potential and limitations of experimental research on the causal effects of VVGs. Empathy
<p>This dataset captures the relational behaviour of 1973 French-speaking students from several universities or schools for higher education in the following fields: engineering (31%), medicine (18%), nursing school (16%), economic sciences (15%), physiotherapy, (4%), psychology (11%), law school (4%) and dietetics (1%). The subjects were 17 to 25 years old (M = 19.6 years, SD = 1.6 years), 57% were females and 43% were males. </p> <p>The feature set is composed of 28 items meant to assess the four following components: fantasy, perspective taking, empathic concern and personal distress. In the questionnaire, the items are shuffled; reversed items (items 3, 4, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19) are present. Items are scored from 0 to 4, where “0” means “Doesn’t describe me very well” and “4” means “Describes me very well”; reverse-scoring is calculated afterwards. The questionnaires were anonymized. The reanalysis of the database in this retrospective study was approved by the ethical committee of the Erasmus Hospital. A Thematic Synthesis on Empathy in Software Engineering based on the Practitioners' Perspective - Supplementary Material

Open dataset of 20 interviews with senior service designers and managers for the Empathy Business research project
<p>The aim of the Empathy Business research project (2023-2024) led by the University of Lapland focused on how to digitalize services and business prototyping through creativity. The research named challenges as well as design methods for developing digital tools for meeting the future needs of service design and business development.<br><br>In total, 20 interviews among senior service designers and managers located in Europe, Latin America and Asia were conducted during spring 2023. The interviews provide perspectives related to the future of service design as a practise, the skills required and further issues of relevance for professionals in the field. Based on affinity diagramming eight main clusters were named: Sustainability, Business compatibility, New tools, Designer’s skills, Art-based methods, People in the centre, Online workshops, and Physical workshops.<br><br>This data set includes an anonymized list of the interviewees, affinity diagram post-it notes of the interviews, short descriptions of the main clusters and an internet link to the online affinity diagram on Miro board.<br><br>The materials provided initial insights for developing Proof-of-Concepts for digitized interfaces, such as suitable plugins, 3D-based photorealistic solutions, or an application with the potential to be used in service design and service prototyping contexts as well as in other development processes within and across organizations.</p>

Pretest and posttest data for nurses' empathy and problem solving
<p><span>Service design is an innovative tool to improve the quality of patient experience and, therefore, it is necessary to have nurses who can implement service design. </span><span>The aim of this study was to implement a training program for patient experience-based nursing service design (PEN-SD) and examine the effects of the program on clinical nurses' compassion and problem-solving ability</span><span>.</span> <span>This study employed mixed methods: a one-group, pretest-posttest design was used as the quantitative approach and structured interviews as the qualitative approach. Twenty-one</span><span> nurses</span><span> were recruited</span><span> from </span><span>a</span><span> university hospital in Korea. A PEN-SD training program was conducted from September 1 to October 6, 2018</span><span>.</span> <span>After the training program, the participants' compassion significantly improved (<em>p</em> = .025) but there was no significant difference in terms of their problem-solving ability </span><span>(<em>p</em> = .313). </span><span>In the structured interviews, the participants' most common response (<em>n</em> = 17) was that they were able to consider problems from the patient's perspective. They also reported identifying solutions to problems through careful observation (<em>n</em> = 5)</span><span>. </span><span>This research is an innovative attempt to introduce a service design in the nursing field. </span><span>The PEN-SD training program was effective in improving compassion among nurses as a service development method to provide the best nursing services reflecting patients' experiences.</span></p>

Data from: Medical school selection criteria as predictors of medical student empathy: a cross-sectional study of medical students, Ireland
Objectives: To determine whether performance in any of the HPAT sections, most specifically the interpersonal understanding section, correlates with self-reported empathy levels in medical students. Setting: The study was conducted in University College Cork, Ireland. Participants: 290 students participated in the study. Matching HPAT scores were available for 263 students. All male and female undergraduate students were invited to participate. Post graduate and international students were excluded. Primary and secondary outcome measures: HPAT-Ireland and JSPE scores were compared including subsection analysis. Comparisons were made between groups such as gender and year of programme. Results : A total of 290 students participated. Males scored significantly higher than females for total HPAT-Ireland [U = 7329, z = -2.04, p < 0.05], HPAT-Ireland Section 1 [U = 5382, z = -5.21, p < 0.0001], and Section 3 scores [U = 6833, z = -2.85, p < 0.01]. In contrast, females scored significantly higher than males on HPAT-Ireland Section 2 [U = 5844, z = -4.46, p < 0.0001]. Females demonstrated significantly higher total JSPE scores relative to males [mean score ± SEM: 113.33 ± 1.05 vs 109.21 ± 0.95; U = 8450, z = -2.83, p < 0.01]. No significant association was observed between JSPE scores and any of the HPAT-Ireland measures [all p > 0.05]. There was no effect of programme year on JSPE scores [all p >0.05]. Conclusion : The introduction of the HPAT–Ireland test was partly designed to identify students with strong interpersonal skills. A significant finding of this study is that JSPE values did not correlate with HPAT-Ireland scores. This study suggests no clear link between scores on a selection test, the HPAT-Ireland, which is designed to assess several skill domains including interpersonal skills, and scores on a psychometric measure of empathy, at any point during medical education.
The data of Emoji Use, Empathy, Attribution of Responsibility, and Forgiveness in Apologies
<p>This is the data for paper: Can Emoji Promote Forgiveness? The Relationship between Emoji Use, Empathy, Attribution of Responsibility, and Forgiveness in Apologies. A total of 323 participants were recruited in that study, and a recall method (Study 1) and scenario simulation method (Study 2) were used to explore the effect of emoji use during apologies on forgiveness, and the mediating role of empathy and attribution of responsibility. The results showed that (a) people chose emoji that resembled real remorseful facial expressions when apologizing; (b) using emoji that expressed remorse when apologizing could promote forgiveness; and (c) empathy mediated the process of emoji promoting forgiveness, while attribution of responsibility did not play a mediating role.</p>

Does the white coat influence satisfaction, trust and empathy in the doctor-patient relationship in the general and family medicine consultation? - interventional study
<p>Objectives: To understand the influence of the white coat on patient satisfaction, opinions about medical clothing, perception about confidence, empathy and medical knowledge and the satisfaction and comfort level of physicians in consultation.</p> <p>Setting: An interventional study was conducted with a representative sample of the population attending primary care in central Portugal.</p> <p>Participants: The sample was composed by 286 patients divided into two groups exposed or not to a doctor wearing a white coat. The first and last patients in consultation every day for 10 consecutive days were included.</p> <p>Interventions: Every other day the volunteer physicians consulted with or without the use of a white coat. At the end of the consultation, a questionnaire was distributed to the patient with simple questions with a Likert scale response, the Portuguese version of the "Trust in physician" scale and the JSPPPE-VP scale. A questionnaire was also distributed to the physician.</p> <p>Outcomes: Planned and measured primary outcomes were patient satisfaction, trust and perception about empathy and secondary outcomes were opinion about medical clothing, satisfaction and comfort level of physicians in consultation.</p> <p>Results: The sample was homogeneous in terms of sociodemographic variables. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of satisfaction, trust, empathy and knowledge perceived by the patients. There were differences in the opinion of the patients about the white coat, and when the physician was wearing the white coat this group of patients tended to think that this was the only acceptable attire for the physician (p<0.001). But, when the family physician was in consultation without the white coat, this group of patients tended to agree that communication was easier (p=0.001).</p> <p>Conclusions: There was no significant impact of the white coat in patient satisfaction, empathy, and confidence in the family physician.</p> <p>Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov</p> <p>ID Number: NCT03965416</p>
