Data for: Collective signalling is shaped by feedbacks between signaller variation, receiver perception, and acoustic environment in a simulated communication network

<p>Communication takes place within a network of multiple signallers and receivers. Social network analysis provides tools to quantify how an individual's social positioning affects group dynamics, and the subsequent biological consequences. However, network analysis is rarely applied to animal communication, likely due to the logistical difficulties of monitoring natural communication networks. We generated a simulated communication network to investigate how variation in individual communication behaviours generates network effects, and how this communication network's structure feeds back to affect future signalling interactions. We simulated competitive acoustic signalling interactions among chorusing individuals and varied several parameters related to communication and chorus size to examine their effects on calling output and social connections. Larger choruses had higher noise levels, and this reduced network density and altered the relationships between individual traits and communication network position. Hearing sensitivity interacted with chorus size to affect both individuals' positions in the network and the acoustic output of the chorus. Physical proximity to competitors influenced signalling, but a distinctive communication network structure emerged when signal active space was limited. Our model raises novel predictions about communication networks that could be tested experimentally, and identifies aspects of information processing in complex environments that remain to be investigated. </p>

Dataset and figures for "Sex in a virtual reality: experimental evidence for sexual isolation due to variation in perception of the environment"

<p>We quantified the strength of assortative mating when variation in the perception of the environment was manipulated experimentally. We manipulated the olfactory neurons of two groups of <em>Drosophila melanogaster </em>which changed their perception of their environment. In response to light (invisible to the flies), one group was designed to smell food (a positive stimulus), while the other group was designed to smell a dangerously high concentration of CO<sub>2</sub> (a negative stimulus). We combined both groups of flies, exposed them to a lit habitat and another habitat that was not, and allowed them to choose between these. We then measured the degree of assortative mating between the two types of flies due to any spatial population structure induced by the flies themselves. To control for any assortative mating due to other reasons, we also measured assortative mating when the heterogeneity of the environment could not be perceived by the flies, and when the environment was actually homogeneous.</p>

Data from: How science communications can help build societal perceptions of invasive alien species and their impacts on the environment

<p>In this study, we investigated the reported beneficial aspects of the invasive alien plant species (IAPS) and argued that, over time and space, the detrimental impacts of the IAS might endanger sustainable livelihoods. The data set contains the following files:</p> <p>Data_S1.xlsx: The file contains details of 154 literature reports. From each paper, we extracted IAPS names (both as reported and standardized), taxonomic information (family and taxon rank), year, country, the scale of observation, and reported beneficial impacts. The beneficial impacts were further categorized into 13 use categories at TDWG (Taxonomic Databases Working Group) Level-1 states (in binary format - 1 indicates the IAPS use and 0 indicates not in use for the individual category).</p> <p>The Metadata_S1.pdf file contains detailed information on preparing literature records for data extraction, the data extraction process, and data organization. &nbsp;</p>

The students' perception of educational environment at Sawai Man Singh Medical College in Jaipur, India

<p>We use the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) in a cross-sectional design to assess the student&rsquo;s perception of the educational environment in the undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course at Sawai Man Singh Medical School in Jaipur, India in 2014. DREEM is a culturally-agnostic questionnaire of 50 items with each item scored on a five-point Likert scale. It measures perception of learning, perception of teachers, academic self-perception, perception of atmosphere, and social self-perception.</p>
