<p>This repository provides the supplementary data to the paper titled <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.resconrec.2024.107572" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>"Future environmental impacts of metals: a systematic review of impact trends, modelling approaches, and challenges"</em></a>, published 2024 in <em>Resources, Conservation and Recycling</em>.</p> <h4><strong>Contents</strong></h4> <p>The repository is split in 3 parts and comprises the following files (more details are provided in the <em>README.md</em>):</p> <p><strong>A_Database of reviewed studies:</strong></p> <ul> <li>contains the detailed review data, meant for readers to use as an overview file to gather studies relevant to them. It also includes an overview of all data sources that the reviewed studies used.</li> </ul> <p><strong>B_Scientific supplement to paper:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Contains all data relevant to the related publication Harpprecht et al. (2024), such as studies screened , FAIR data analysis, or analyzed impact trends.</li> </ul> <p><strong>C_Data for figures in paper:</strong></p> <ul> <li>This file contains all the data for Figures 3, 4 and 5 in tabular form, representing impact trends, scenario variables, scenario modelling approaches and data sources used.</li> </ul> <h4><strong>Summary</strong></h4> <p>These files allow to reproduce the results of our study. In this work, we systematically reviewed studies which assessed future environmental impacts of metal supply chains. Our review yielded 40 publications covering 15 metals: copper, iron, aluminium, nickel, zinc, lead, cobalt, lithium, gold, manganese, neodymium, dysprosium, praseodymium, terbium, and titanium. We evaluated their results regarding future impact trends, and their methods, i.e., modelling approaches, scenario variables, and data sources of scenario variables. We identified 15 scenario variables. The most common variables are background electricity mix, ore grade, recycling shares, demand, and energy efficiency. Can household storage conditions reduce food waste and environmental impact ? A broccoli case study
<p>The consumption stage has been identified as the largest producer of food waste (FW) across the food supply chain (FSC), with fruit and vegetables being the most affected product category. The present study aims to determine the op- timal storage scenario at household level to avoid food waste and which has the lowest environmental footprint. Broc- coli was stored under different storage conditions: unbagged or bagged (periodically opened) in bioplastic bags inside a domestic refrigerator at 5 or 7 °C for 34 days and then analysed for relative humidity (RH), sensory properties and bioactive compounds. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to evaluate the environmental profile of 1 kg of broccoli purchased by the consumer (cradle-to-grave). At day 0 (base scenario) the carbon footprint was 0.81 kg CO2 eq/kg, with the vegetable farming being the main contributor to this environmental impact, mostly driven by fertiliser (production and its emissions to air and water) and irrigation (due to electricity consumption for water pumping). Quality and food waste depended on time and storage conditions: For short storage times, within three days, the best quality combined with the lowest environmental footprint was for unbagged broccoli at 7 °C and no household food waste. However, this scenario had the highest food waste level from day 3 onwards, with increased resource loss and overall environmental footprint. For long-term storage, using a bag and storing at 5 °C helped to re- duce food waste with the lowest environmental footprint. For example, at 16 days, this scenario (bagged at 5 °C) could save 4.63 kg/FU ofbroccoli and 3.16 kg CO2 eq/FU compared to the worst scenario (unbagged at 7 °C). Consumers are the key to reducing household food waste and this research provides the knowledge for improvement.</p>

Sampling sites where ecological indices were used to assess the impact of different environmental stressors in aquatic environments in Argentina
Dataset is a compilation of all sampling sites of articles where ecological indices were used to assess the impact of different environmental stressors in aquatic environments from Argentina. Points of this dataset were extracted from 78 papers published between 1996 and 2018. We selected articles that use ecological indices to analyze some local environmental problematics or stressors. Using the type of index from each article we performed the kml file, which contained the categorized sampling sites by different symbols according to the ecological index: physico-chemical, biological, geomorphological and multimetric. We carried out a map (shapefile) with all the sampling sites referenced to the ecoregions of Argentina proposed by Burkart (1999).

Dataset: Environmental Impact on the Long-Term Connectivity and Link Quality of an Outdoor LoRa Network
<p>This repository contains the long-term connectivity and link quality dataset collected on <a href="https://chirpbox.github.io/">ChirpBox</a> over 4 months (May -- September 2021) in the city of Shanghai, China. </p> <p>In addition to the dataset itself, we provide evaluation scripts for data analysis and visualization, in order to facilitate data exploration and re-use. Data for: Environmental complexity mitigates the demographic impact of sexual selection
<p>Sexual selection and the evolution of costly mating strategies can negatively impact population demography and adaptive potential. While laboratory studies have documented outcomes stemming from these processes, theory suggests that the demographic impact of sexual selection is contingent on the environment and therefore may have been overestimated in simple laboratory settings. Here we find support for this claim. We exposed copies of beetle lines, previously evolved with or without sexual selection, to a 10-generation heatwave while maintaining half of them in a simple environment and the other half in a complex environment. Populations with an evolutionary history of sexual selection maintained larger sizes and more stable growth rates in complex (relative to simple) environments, an effect not seen in populations that evolved without sexual selection. These results have implications for evolutionary forecasting and suggest that the demographic impact of sexual selection in natural populations might be lower than predicted.</p>

Dataset: Impact of early Danian environmental perturbations on mid-latitude planktic foraminiferal assemblages from the ODP Site 1262 (South Atlantic Ocean)
<div> <div> <div> <p><span>After the mass extinction at the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary (~66 Ma), life forms quickly radiated to occupy ecological niches in the world’s oceans. Nevertheless, the aftermath of the Chicxulub impact, the massive volcanism of the Deccan Traps and climatic perturbations endured during the early Danian. The impact of consequent carbon cycle perturbations on nascent plankton communities, such as the Dan-C2 event (~65.80 to ~65.71 Ma), is still poorly known. In this work, we present a detailed study of planktic foraminiferal assemblages from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1262 (Walvis Ridge, South Atlantic Ocean), spanning the first ~400 kyr of the Danian. No relevant perturbations in planktic foraminiferal assemblages and carbonate preservation indices have been identified at Site 1262 during the Dan-C2 event. Approximately 50 kyr before the beginning of the Dan-C2 event, a Hg-rich interval, potentially linked to the emplacement of the Ambenali Formation of the Deccan Traps massive volcanism, is recorded between ~65.95 and 65.82 Ma. It coincides with an increase in aberrant planktic foraminifera (~65.93 to ~65.82 Ma), allowing to establish a cause-effect relationship. Additionally, a bloom of triserial guembelitriids was recognized between ~65.87 and ~65.78 Ma, also preceding the Dan-C2 event but lagging the Hg-rich interval and the bloom of aberrant planktic foraminifera. The lag time between the first volcanic episode and ecosystem response may be due to factors such as an inefficient biological pump and increases in temperature, microbial activity and food supply at the ocean surface. A second Hg-rich interval identified between ~65.70 and ~65.65 Ma has been tentatively tied to the Mahabaleswar Formation of the Deccan Traps. Neither the second volcanic episode nor the Dan-C2 event resulted in relevant environmental perturbations at Site 1262. This suggests that, although volcanism may have had an impact on early plankton communities in the early Danian through metal contamination, marine ecosystems likely became progressively more stable and resistant to changes in volcanic emissions and the carbon cycle. </span></p> </div> </div> </div>
POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA: A COMPARATIVE STUDY USING LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT
<p>Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) serves as a tool to estimate the potential impacts of a waste management system. Sleman Regency needs a scenario of waste management with a lower environmental impact. The present study aims to determine the potential impact of the existing business as usual (BAU) waste management practice in Sleman Regency and compare it with several alternatives to waste management strategies. The LCA method was applied following ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. The impact was assessed using the CML-1A Baseline and ILCD 2011 Midpoint+ methods, along with data from the Ecoinvent database. In the BAU scenario, the impact values observed in every 1 ton of waste managed were Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 4.90E+03 kg CO2 eq, Acidification Potential (ADP) of 2.78E-03 kg SO2 eq, Eutrophication Potential (EP) of 4.92E-02 kg PO4-eq, Human Toxicity Potential (HTP) of 2.06E+01 kg 1.4 DB eq, and Land Use Potential (LUP) of 4.71E+01 kg C deficit. Processing waste into biomass pellets and Refuse Derived Fuel accompanied by waste reduction could decrease the GWP value to 34.04 kg CO2 eq, ADP to 2.96E-06 kg SO2 eq, EP to 7.33E-05 kg PO4-eq, HTP to 3.70E-04 kg 1.4 DB eq, and LUP to 2.11E-03 kg C deficit. The results of waste management with the lowest impact value can serve as a reference for formulating waste management policies in the study area.</p>

<p>This dataset contains the background scenarios for metal supply used for the publication <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/jiec.13181">"Environmental impacts of key metals' supply and low-carbon technologies are likely to decrease in the future"</a> in the Journal of Industrial Ecology (2021).</p> <p><strong>Scenario description:</strong></p> <p>These background scenarios comprise five variables for the metals of copper, nickel, zinc, and lead for the time period of 2010-2050. These variables are:<br> V1: ore grade decline and energy requirements</p> <p>V2: market shares of primary production locations</p> <p>V3: energy efficiency improvements during smelting and refining</p> <p>V4: market shares of primary production routes</p> <p>V5: market shares of primary and secondary production.<br> <br> The associated <a href="http://doi.org/10.1111/jiec.13181">article</a> in the Journal of Industrial Ecology describes the modelling assumptions and data sources of the scenarios.
