PIE LTER dissolved nutrient and particulate concentrations of freshwater inputs to the Plum Island estuarine system, Massachusetts, taken approximately monthly.

Multi-year data of water chemistry including nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments, was determined from monthly grab samples taken at watershed inputs to the Plum Island Sound Estuary. Sampling sites were the Ipswich River (Sylvania Dam, Ipswich, MA), Parker River Dam (Central St, Newbury, MA), Egypt River (Ipswich, MA) Mill River (Newbury, MA), Muddy Run (Ipswich, MA), Little River (Newbury, MA). These nutrient concentrations are then used in conjunction with USGS discharge data (recorded at gages in the Parker River at Byfield, MA and the Ipswich River at Ipswich, MA) to calculate annual nutrient loading to the Plum Island Sound Estuary, coming over each dam. Annual yield is also calculated for both dams. Refer to file WAT-VA-Load for loading data.

Critical slowing down: vegetation height, cover and composition assess resilience of tidal fresh, brackish and salt marshes following experimental disturbance at twelve sites across the estuarine landscape

We investigated the relative recovery rates of vegetation cover, vegetation height and community composition over a period of >10 years after experimental disturbance in 12 tidal marshes (two oligohaline, three mesohaline and seven polyhaline sites) across the estuarine landscape on the coast of Georgia, USA. Vegetation was removed from three by three meter plots (four per site) with herbicide in 2006 followed by repeated clipping through 2009. Vegetation height, cover and composition was assessed in experimental and control plots (4 of each per site) from 2010 to 2020. The goal of the study was to assess how quickly the sites recovered from disturbance, how this varied in different types of marshes, and how results varied depending on whether recovery was assessed by vegetation height, cover or composition.

Efficacy and fate of fluridone applications for control of invasive submersed aquatic vegetation in the estuarine environment of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta

We conducted a study in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to determine efficacy of the widely used herbicide fluridone in an estuarine ecosystem. The primary goal of SAV removal was restoration of open water habitat for endangered Hypomesus transpacificus (Delta Smelt). Over 18 months and multiple sets of multi-week fluridone applications, we monitored concentrations of fluridone and responses by SAV across pairs of treated and reference sites. Fluridone concentrations in the water were generally below the 2-5 parts per billion required for SAV control. Monitoring demonstrated these low water concentrations were likely due to dissipation by tides, despite use of pelleted fluridone formulations marketed for flowing water environments. Fluridone did, however, accumulate in sediment at concentrations hundreds of times higher than those measured in the water. Nonetheless, we did not observe lasting reductions in SAV abundance or changes in SAV community composition. By demonstrating lack of efficacy of one of the few herbicides permitted for use in this estuary, this study highlights the need for development of SAV management tools tailored to the challenges of hydrologically complex environments like estuaries.

Microbially-Mediated Transformations of Estuarine Dissolved Organic Matter from Doboy Sound, Sapelo Sound and the Altamaha River near Sapelo Island, Georgia in 2012-2013

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) samples were collected from a marsh-dominated estuarine system (Altamaha River estuary, Doboy Sound and Sapelo Sound near Sapelo Island, Georgia), inoculated with native microbiological samples, and incubated in the dark for up to 70 days. Control and incubated DOM samples were then anlyzed using ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry to investiage microbially-mediated transformations at the molecular level. Samples were collected at high tide in November 2012 and May 2013.

Leaf area index and above ground biomass for Juncus roemerianus in the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve from 2015 to 2019

Leaf area index (LAI) and above ground biomass were measured in 16 permanent Juncus roemerianus vegetation plots located in the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Mississippi. Data were collected from 2015 to 2019. LAI were measured using a handheld ceptometer. Above ground biomass for each plot were collected from core samples.

Estimates of nitrogen and phosphorus excretion rates in individual marine and estuarine animals

This dataset contains nitrogen and phosphorus excretion rate, as well as dry biomass, estimates for individual vertebrate and invertebrate animals in marine and estuarine environments. This dataset is a product of an LTER Synthesis Working Group aimed at evaluating the spatiotemporal variability in consumer nutrient dynamics in the wake of global change across eight long-term ecological research projects. These projects include seven long-term ecological research programs (LTER) funded by the National Science Foundation: (1) California Current Ecosystem, (2) Florida Coastal Everglades, (3) Moorea Coral Reef, (4) Northern Gulf of Alaska, (5) Plum Island Ecosystems, (6) Santa Barbara Coastal, and (7) Virginia Coast Reserve LTER projects. Additionally, the dataset includes data from (8) The Partnership for Interdisciplinary Science of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) research program. The temporal coverage of each time series data varies among projects, with the earliest record in 1997 and the most recent in 2023. This data package also includes two folders of R scripts used for data harmonization, identical to those in the LTER Synthesis Working Group: Consumer-Mediated Nutrient Dynamics Project, v2.0.0. Seasonal patterns of estuarine creek-bank and intertidal marsh benthic chlorophyll and gross oxygenic photosynthesis were investigated at several sites on Sapelo Island and the Satilla River in coastal Georgia. Benthic chlorophyll were measured in the bulk surface centimeter depth of sediment. Gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates were integrated over 100 um resolution measurements below the sediment water interface using oxygen microelectrodes. Several relatively pristine sites on Sapelo Island (Moses Hammock, Dean Creek and Marine Institute) and a presumably heavily impacted site (Dover Bluff) show similar levels of chlorophyll concentration and photosynthesis rate across bank and marsh zones with higher photosynthetic biomass and activity in the spring season. Nutrient inputs to these study sites are also suggested as a control on gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates as evidenced by a relationship between photosynthesis rate and land-use.

Porewater nutrients, dissolved organics, redox species, and gasses in estuarine intertidal sediments at sites on Sapelo Island and near the Satilla River from Fall 2000 through Fall 2002

Seasonal patterns of estuarine creek-bank sediment porewater nutrients, dissolved organics, redox species and gasses were investigated at several sites on Sapelo Island and the Satilla River in coastal Georgia. Porewater ammonium, nitrate+nitrite, phosphate, silica, dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, reduced iron and manganese, chloride, sulfate, hydrogen sulfide, pH, dissolved inorganic carbon, methane and nitrogen gas were measured at centimeter scale resolution depth profiles with the use of porewater equilibration meters. Several relatively pristine sites on Sapelo Island (Moses Hammock, Dean Creek and Marine Institute), a site slightly impacted by development (White Oak Creek) and a presumably heavily impacted site (Dover Bluff) show different levels and patterns of several porewater constituents.

Mechanisms mediating plant distributions across estuarine landscapes in a low-latitude tidal estuary

Understanding of how plant communities are organized and will respond to global changes requires an understanding of how plant species respond to multiple environmental gradients. We examined the mechanisms mediating the distribution patterns of tidal marsh plants along an estuarine gradient in Georgia using a combination of field transplant experiments and monitoring. Our results could not be fully explained by the “competition-to-stress hypothesis” (the current paradigm explaining plant distributions across estuarine landscapes). This hypothesis states that the upstream limits of plant distributions are determined by competition, and the downstream limits by abiotic stress. We found that competition was generally strong in freshwater and brackish marshes, and that conditions in brackish and salt marshes were stressful to freshwater marsh plants, results consistent with the competition-to-stress hypothesis. Four other aspects of our results, however, were not explained by the competition-to-stress hypothesis. First, several halophytes found the freshwater habitat stressful, and performed best (in the absence of competition) in brackish or salt marshes. Second, the upstream distribution of one species was determined by the combination of both abiotic and biotic (competition) factors. Third, marsh productivity (estimated by standing biomass) was a better predictor of relative biotic interaction intensity (RII) than was salinity or flooding, suggesting that productivity is a better indicator of plant stress than salinity or flooding gradients. Fourth, facilitation played a role in mediating the distribution patterns of some plants. Our results illustrate that even apparently simple abiotic gradients can encompass surprisingly complex processes mediating plant distributions.

2004 Estuarine Fish Sampling - Managing freshwater inflow to estuaries in northeast Puerto Rico

Historical data are often one of the only resources for documenting and assessing causes of environmental change, particularly in developing regions where funding for ecological studies is limited. In this study, previously unpublished data from a 1977 year-long study of the fish community of the Espiritu Santo estuary are presented. This dataset is among the oldest and most extensive surveys of a Caribbean island estuarine fish community. A comparison of these historical data with data collected in June and July 2004 using identical sampling methods allowed description of potential long-term changes in the fish community, identification of vulnerable species, and assessment of potential drivers of change. Results strongly suggest a decline in species richness and abundance in the Espiritu Santo estuarine fish community, with greater declines in freshwater-tolerant than marine or euryhaline species. Declines in freshwater inflow to the estuary, due to large-scale upstream water abstractions for municipal use, have increased since the initial 1977 survey. This is the first study to examine long-term change in the fish community of a tropical island estuary. Additional research and conservation efforts are needed to understand mechanisms of change and to protect Caribbean island estuarine fish communities. Chapter 2 (isotope and gut content data): The contribution of riverine-derived organisms and organic matter to four fishes along the salinity gradient in two Puerto Rican estuaries, the Espiritu Santo and Mameyes, was examined via stable isotope and gut content analyses. Stable isotope analyses indicated that riverine organic matter potentially contributed as much as 69% of the diet of one (caitipa mojarra, Diapterus rhombeus) of four fishes sampled. In contrast, riverine organic matter was of little direct importance to the three other fishes, tarpon snook (Centropomus pectinatus), ground croaker (Bairdiella ronchus), and white mullet (Mugil curema) contributing le

SBC LTER: OCEAN: Particulate Organic Matter Content and Composition of Stream, Estuarine, and Marine Sediments

An unprecedented five-year drought in California, coupled with conditions of anomalously low ocean productivity and the prospect of one of the strongest El Niño periods on record with above average rainfall were the impetus for this RAPID award, which seeks to test specific hypotheses pertaining to the origin, distribution, processing, and bioavailability of terrestrial organic matter in coastal marine sediments and their potential for serving as a reservoir of nitrogen storage to fuel nearshore primary production during periods when nitrate concentrations are low. The goals of the research were to: (1) measure bulk properties and biomarker tracers of particulate organic matter (POM) in stream water and in coastal marine sediments at SBC LTER and other reef sites differing in exposure to terrestrial runoff prior to and following large storm events, (2) determine the bioavailability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from POM in marine sediments following large runoff events, and (3) measure changes in concentrations of dissolved inorganic and organic nitrogen in pore water of marine sediments near to and distant from stream mouths in the Santa Barbara Channel. Samples were analyzed for organic matter content using a loss-on-ignition combustion method, and samples were also analyzed for organic carbon and nitrogen content and isotopes using a stable isotope mass spectrometer interfaced with an elemental analyzer. Subsamples were shipped to the laboratory of Marc Lucotte at the University of Québec, Montréal for analysis of lignin content using the cupric oxidation method.

Short- And Long-Term Micro & Nano Particles Exposure to Estuarine Model Species at Variable Salinities

Micro (< 5mm) & Nano (1-1000 nm) plastic (MNP) particles are ubiquitous in the environment and have been shown to have a variety of effects on aquatic organisms. The effects of MNP exposure can vary depending on the type of MNP, the concentration of MNP, the duration of exposure, and the salinity of the water. This study used 5 plastic types including polyester (PE), polypropylene (PP), polylactic acid (PLA), polyethylene terephthalate (PETE) and tire particles (TP) in two forms, solid plastic particles and microfibers. To assess potential impacts on exposed organisms, early life stages of the estuarine indicator species Inland Silverside (Menidia beryllina) and mysid shrimp (Americamysis bahia) were exposed to three concentrations at micro- and nano-size fractions, and separately to leachate, across a 5-25 PSU salinity gradient. This exposure study was performed in longer term (21 days for Inland Silverside and 28 days for mysid shrimp) and shorter term (4 days for Inland Silverside and 7 days for mysid shrimp). Following MNP exposures of 7d (A. bahia) and 96 h (M. beryllina), behavioral assays were performed post-exposure from each treatment using a Danio Vision Observation Chamber (Noldus, Wageningen, the Netherlands) for the dark: light cycle as described previously (Siddiqui et al., 2022; Siddiqui et al., 2023; Mundy et al., 2021; Segarra et al., 2021). These behavior studies provide important information for risk assessments and policy making that can establish knowledge for MNPs risk.

Typically marine benthic community studies are limited temporally and the majority of previously published 'longterm' meiofauna results (all taxa) were based on about a year's duration.
