Cine and real-time free-breathing CMR at rest and under exercise stress of healthy volunteers
<p>The dataset consists of cine and real-time images from 15 healthy volunteers (7 males; 8 females). All images were acquired in supine position using a 32-channel cardiac surface receiver coil at 3 T (Skyra, Siemens Healthineers, Germany).</p> <p>Conventional imaging at rest included a balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) ECG-gated cine sequence to create a short-axis stack covering the entire heart including both ventricles and atria. Real-time CMR data acquisition was performed during free-breathing and without ECG-synchronization at rest and under two different levels of exercise stress.</p> <p>The dataset includes automatically created contours (comDL) using Medis (version 4.0.56.4, QMass® 8.1, Medical Imaging Systems, Leiden, Netherlands) for all images, as well as manually corrected (mc) contours based on the comDL contours for all cine and real-time measurements at rest and under exercise stress for end-diastolic (ED) and end-systolic phases (ES).</p> <p>The dataset also includes segmentation masks in NIfTI format for cine and real-time CMR at rest and under exercise stress created with nnU-Net (DOI:10.1038/s41592-020-01008-z) with freely available weights based trained on the dataset of the cardiac segmentation challenge "Automated Cardiac Segmentation Challenge" (ACDC) (DOI:10.1109/TMI.2018.2837502).</p> <p>To minimize the influence of respiratory motion on clinical measures, images in the ED and ES phase of the cardiac cycle during end-expiration were manually selected for each slice. The dataset includes indices for these images for real-time CMR measurements at rest and under exercise stress. For intra-observer variability, manually corrected contours for the derivation of the clinical measures were created three to six months after the initial segmentation. For inter-observer variability, manually corrected contours for the derivation of the clinical parameters were created for the first five volunteers by a second reader with experience in cardiac segmentation. Single images in the ED and ES phase during end-expiration were once again chosen from each slice.</p> <p>Image data is provided in a file format used by the BART toolbox. <br>DOI:10.5281/zenodo.7110562</p>
Wearable Device Dataset from Induced Stress and Structured Exercise Sessions
<p>This original dataset contains physiological signals collected during structured acute stress induction and aerobic and anaerobic exercise sessions using a wearable device. Blood volume pulse, motion-based activity, skin temperature, and electrodermal activity were recorded with the Empatica E4, a research-grade wearable. The stress induction protocol involved math and emotional tasks designed to provoke stress responses, interleaved with rest periods. Self-reported stress levels were also recorded during this procedure. For the exercise sessions, distinct routines on a stationary bike were created for aerobic and anaerobic activities. The dataset includes records from 36 healthy volunteers for stress sessions, 30 for aerobic exercise, and 31 for anaerobic exercise. By examining the variations in physiological signals, the effects of these activities can be analyzed. This dataset is a valuable resource for research on stress and exercise detection and classification.</p>

Data from: Stress coping and evolution of aerobic exercise performance: corticosterone levels in voles from a selection experiment
The locomotor performance achieved in a challenging situation depends not only on physiological limitations, such as the aerobic exercise capacity, but also on behavioral characteristics, such as adequate stress coping. The stress response is mediated largely by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, through modulated release of glucocorticoids. We used a unique experimental evolution model system to test a hypothesis that evolution of an increased aerobic exercise performance can be facilitated by modification of the glucocorticoid-related stress coping mechanisms. Bank voles (Myodes glareolus) from "aerobic" (A) lines, selected for 22 generations for high maximum swim-induced rate of oxygen consumption (VO2swim), achieved a 64% higher VO2swim than those from unselected, control (C) lines. The temporal pattern of exercise during the swimming trial also evolved, and the A-line voles achieved VO2swim later in the course of the trial, which indicates a modification in the stress response characteristics. Both VO2swim and the average metabolic rate measured during the trial tended to increase with baseline corticosterone level, and decreased with the post-exercise level. Thus, increased baseline corticosterone level promotes high metabolic performance, but a high corticosterone response to swimming acts as an inhibitor rather than stimulator of intense activity. However, neither of the corticosterone traits differed between the A-selected and control lines. Thus, the experiment did not provide evidence that evolution of increased aerobic performance is facilitated by modification of the glucocorticoid levels. The results, however, do not exclude a possibility that other aspects of the HPA axis function evolved in response to the selection.
