Maternal predation risk increases offspring's exploration but does not affect schooling behavior
<p>The environment that parents experience can influence their reproductive output and their offspring's fitness via parental effects. Perceived predation risk can affect both parent and offspring phenotype, but it remains unclear to what extent offspring behavioral traits are affected when the mother is exposed to predation risk. This is particularly unclear in live-bearing species where maternal effects could occur during embryogenesis. Here, using a <i>half-sib</i> design to control for paternal effects, we experimentally exposed females of a live-bearing fish, the guppy (<i>Poecilia reticulata</i>), to visual predator cues and conspecific alarm cues during their gestation. Females exposed to predation risk cues increased their anti-predator behaviors throughout the entire treatment. Offspring of mothers exposed to the predation stimuli exhibited more pronounced exploratory behavior, but did not show any significant differences in their schooling behavior, compared to controls. Thus, while maternally perceived risk affected offspring's exploration during early stages of life, offspring's schooling behavior could be influenced more by direct environmental experience, rather than via maternal cues. Our results suggest a rather limited role in predator-induced maternal effects on the behavior of juvenile guppies.</p>
Exploring Behavioral Tendencies on Social Media: A Perspective Through Claim Check-Worthiness
<h2>Randomly Sampled Users Dataset (RSU.csv)</h2> <p>This dataset consists of 11,173 users collected through Twitter's APIs. We collected 10,000 random English tweets in February 2023 using Twitter's Volume Stream API. The tweets were posted by around 3,000 users. For each user, we collected up to 100 of its most recent followees using Twitter's Following API. Through the Timeline and Liking APIs, for each user, we collected their most recent tweets (up to 3,200 tweets due to Twitter's limit) and liked-tweets (up to 3,200 too). We then filtered out users that have insufficient tweets (less than 100 original-tweets or less than 80 retweets/liked-tweets) to ensure that the sample sizes are statistically significant in our analyses. Finally, we have 11,173 users along with 40,405,150 tweets. </p> <h2>Humanities Dataset (HUM.csv)</h2> <p>This dataset contains 341,285 tweets and 498 Twitter accounts from selected Twitter lists including <em>Book Author</em>, <em>Christianity</em>, <em>Artists</em>, <em>Buddhism</em>, <em>Musician</em>, and <em>Philosophers</em>. We use Twitter's List and Timeline APIs to collect the accounts and their most recent tweets (up to 1,000). The dataset was collected in January 2024.</p> <h2>Politics Dataset (POL.csv)</h2> <p>This dataset contains all tweets from selected U.S. news media and U.S. politicians including <em>Senators</em>, <em>House Members</em>, <em>US Governors</em>, <em>US Secretaries of State</em>, <em>US Cabinet</em>, and <em>US Election Officials</em> at collection time. We used Twitter's Timeline API to collect the accounts' tweets (up to 3,200 tweets). The dataset was collected in May 2023, with 8,153,745 tweets and 3,784 Twitter accounts. </p> <h2>Data Fields</h2> <p>Due to Twitter's content redistribution policy, we are only allowed to publish tweet IDs and user IDs. Therefore, in each dataset, each row/datapoint represent a tweet, containing two fields --- tweet_id and user_id. </p>

<p>This dataset contains all analyzed data from the study "Maith, O., Baladron, J., Einhäuser, W., & Hamker, F. H. (2023). Exploration behavior after reversals is predicted by STN-GPe synaptic plasticity in a basal ganglia model. Submitted to iScience.". It includes the behavioral data of 20 human participants (folder "psychExp") and of simulations of a neuro-computational basal ganglia model (folder "simulations") of the study.</p> <p>To replicate the results of the study, the dataset can be analyzed using the code provided separately under the following identifier: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6555886. Data from: Presence of same-sex kin promotes explorative behavior in subadult cichlid fish
<p>While the importance of kin discrimination, i.e. kin recognition and subsequent differential treatment of kin and non-kin, is well established for kin-directed cooperation or altruism, the role of kin discrimination in the context of kin competition and kin avoidance is largely unexplored. Theory predicts that individuals avoiding competition with kin should be favored by natural selection due to indirect fitness benefits. Using an experimental approach, we investigated whether the presence of same-sex kin affects avoidance and explorative behavior in subadult <i>Pelvicachromis taeniatus</i>, a West African cichlid fish with strong intra-sexual competition in both sexes. <i>P. taeniatus</i> is capable of recognizing kin using phenotype matching and shows kin discrimination in diverse contexts. When exposed to a same-sex conspecific, both males and females tended to interact less with the related opponent. Moreover, individuals explored a novel environment faster after exposure to kin than to nonkin. This effect was more pronounced in females. Individuals avoiding the proximity of same-sex relatives may reduce kin competition over resources such as mating partners or food.</p>
Exploring the interfacial behavior of ruthenium complexes in ionic liquids: implications for supported ionic liquid phase catalysts, DOI: 10.1039/D4CP00247D
<p>The interaction of metal complexes with ionic liquids, with a particular focus on the stability and surface concentration of the metal centers, is crucial in applications involving catalysts based on supported ionic liquids. In this study, we synthesized the complexes [Ru(tpy)(bpy)Cl][PF<sub>6</sub>] and [Ru(tpy)(dcb)Cl][PF<sub>6</sub>] (tpy = 2,2′,2′′-terpyridine, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine, dcb = 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-bipyridine) and we prepared solutions using the ionic liquids (ILs) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [C<sub>2</sub>C<sub>1</sub>Im][OAc] and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [C<sub>4</sub>C<sub>1</sub>Im][PF<sub>6</sub>]. The chemical environment of the Ru(II) metal center and the interfacial behavior of the complexes in the different IL solutions were determined using angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS). In [C<sub>4</sub>C<sub>1</sub>Im][PF<sub>6</sub>], [Ru(tpy)(bpy)Cl][PF<sub>6</sub>] maintains its chemical structure, while in [C<sub>2</sub>C<sub>1</sub>Im][OAc], partial changes in the chemical environment of the Ru center are indicated by XPS, likely due to ligand exchange. The presence of carboxylic acid functional groups in the bipyridyl ligand seems to inhibit this ligand exchange. The investigated complexes do not exhibit surface activity but are depleted from the IL/gas interface. These findings hold significance for the design of new supported ionic liquid phase catalysts based on Ru complexes.</p>

All content is documented in the README.md file.</p> <p>Abstract: In this paper, we present converging results from three studies investigating children’s production or comprehension of the negative indefinite <em>kein</em> in German. An elicited production study found that 3- to 6-year-old children and adults exhibit different patterns with respect to the production of <em>kein</em>: children, but not adults, exhibit an asymmetry with respect to the position where they produce negative indefinites, in that they use negative indefinites more frequently in object than in subject position. A corpus study investigating spontaneous speech replicated this asymmetry for children, but this time found it also present for adults. Finally, the asymmetry is corroborated by a comprehension study indicating a processing cost for negative indefinite subjects, relative to negative indefinite objects. We argue that these patterns are most straightforwardly captured by an explanation that assumes the decomposition approach to the German negative indefinite <em>kein</em>: rather than a single semantic unit (i.e., negative quantifier), <em>kein</em> is decomposed into a negative part and an indefinite part.</p> </div>
Paradoxical Leadership and Employee Proactive Work Behavior: Exploring the Mediating Role of Perceived Psychological Contract Fulfillment.
<p><span><span>Abstract</span></span></p> <p><strong><span>Background</span></strong></p> <p><span>This study delves into the intricate interplay among paradoxical leadership (PL), employees' proactive work behaviour (EPWB), and perceived psychological contract fulfilment (PPCF). PL, characterized by its simultaneous emphasis on apparently contradictory behaviours, has garnered attention due to its potential to foster innovation, adaptability, and creativity. The study's main objective is to thoroughly explore the complexities of PL, its influence on EPWB, and whether the PPCF serves as a mediator. <span> </span></span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span></strong></p> <p><span>A survey was distributed to 338 hotel and travel agency employees to gather data. The data was analysed using structural equation modelling through a SmartPLS program. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results </span></strong></p> <p><span>The results reveal a positive correlation between PL and EPWB. Additionally, PPCF partially mediates this relationship, indicating its vital role in exploring the positive impact of PL on boosting proactive behaviours. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusions </span></strong></p> <p><span>This research brings forth meaningful contributions to both theoretical and practical dimensions. Theoretically, it enhances our comprehension of how PL manifests in the distinctive landscape of the hospitality and tourism domain, substantiating its potential to drive proactive behaviours among employees. The mediation of PPCF enriches our grasp of the underlying mechanisms, accentuating the significance of maintaining harmonized and consistent leadership practices. Data and code for Heterogeneous selection on exploration behavior within and among West European populations of a passerine bird
<p><span>Heterogeneous selection is often proposed as a key mechanism maintaining repeatable behavioral variation ("animal personality") in wild populations. Previous studies largely focused on temporal variation in selection within single populations. The relative importance of spatial versus temporal variation remains unexplored, despite these processes having distinct effects on local adaptation. Using data from >3500 great tits (<i>Parus major</i>) and 35 nest box plots situated within five West-European populations monitored over 4-18 years, we show that selection on exploration behavior varies primarily spatially, across populations, and study plots within populations. Exploration was, simultaneously, selectively neutral in the average population and year. These findings imply that spatial variation in selection may represent a primary mechanism maintaining animal personalities, likely promoting the evolution of local adaptation, phenotype-dependent dispersal, and nonrandom settlement. Selection also varied within populations among years, which may counteract local adaptation. Our study underlines the importance of combining multiple spatiotemporal scales in the study of behavioral adaptation.</span></p>
Exploring the behaviors and social preferences of a large, multi-generational herd of zoo-housed southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum), 2020–2021
<p><span>The zoo-housed southern white rhinoceros (SWR) population is of special concern due to their lack of consistent breeding success. An enhanced understanding of SWR social preferences could better inform management planning by promoting natural social relationships, which can positively affect their well-being. The large, multigeneration herd housed at the North Carolina Zoo provides an ideal opportunity to examine rhino sociality across different ages, kin types, and social groupings. </span><span>Eight female rhinos' social and nonsocial behaviors were recorded from November 2020 through June 2021 across 242 hours. Activity budget analyses revealed strong seasonal and temporal variations in grazing and resting behaviors, with no stereotypic behaviors recorded. Bond strength calculations suggested that each female maintained strong social bonds with one to two partners. Beyond mother-nursing calf bonds, we found that the strongest social ties were maintained between calf-less adults and subadults in these dyads.</span> <span>Considering these findings, we recommend that management plans attempt to house immature females with calf-less adult females, as they may be necessary to the social landscape of immature females and, ultimately, improve their welfare.</span></p>
